but unless I'm being retarded something seems a bit off with the game's pathfinding.
Weird, I've actually been pretty impressed with how good the pathfinding has been, at least in the early areas. Maybe it still needs some tweaking to deal with some of the later environments?

Music when you enter the Factory is :yeah: but unless I'm being retarded something seems a bit off with the game's pathfinding. It's not game breaking, or as annoying as you could occasionally have to deal with in say Planescape Torment, but I find myself having to 'reset' the party by clicking on the portraits to get them to start moving again. Seems to crop up particularly a lot in Mission Control.
Are you playing with uncapped frame rate? Mission Control is one of the easiest environments to render, bet your frames are highest there…

I skipped that one, didn't manage it. Even with the combat robot (but less characters)

What is this, harsh criticism of the future Codex 2023 GOTY? Trouble in paradise?

So are Whisper's takes just typical drama queen currentyear gaymer bitching or is there something to it?
It's a false flag operation by the CIA. He's wearing the vatnik badge and making bad posts about good CRPGs to make them look stupid.

I'm an expert on psy-ops so you can trust my assessment.

What is the difference between streetwise and persuasion? Its driving me crazy that persuasion exists, both are used to fucking persuade, why does it exist?

Theoretically, it helps you in different situations. I always wondered if it was inspired by the Etiquette and Streetwise skills in Daggerfall, because they seemed to work that way in AoD - street thugs can be talked to with Streetwise while nobility can be talked to with Persuade.

It is interesting that they often have near-identical Streetwise and Persuade options in this, and both seem to be deployed pretty much equally in most circumstances. I guess it's so you can pick the option that corresponds to whichever skill you have lowest, to get more XP in it.

After playing for an hour I can't say I'm very amazed with this game. First thing that greets me are dozens of walls of text. Then characters start descriptive-dialoguing at me, leading to the usual shit that always grinds my gears:

image.png

thank God the game mentioned he's a dark skinned man with an optical implant or I simply wouldn't have figured

Of course it's also a generic starter town opening with generic starter town problems that everyone lays out on me, except this time I'm also flooded with deep lore and name-bombed with references to people I have no idea about, and already people are asking me to take sides or some shit, whoa hold on there game, I ain't even acclimatised yet.

The layout of the starter town with the layers of catwalks in a big dark area and a static camera also makes me groan, fortunately comrade highlight shows me where the points of interest are.

This better get better soon or I'll turn unpleasant.
WOKE! mindvirus has li-te-ra-lly infested by this point 95-99% of ALL Game Devs, indie or AAA

How many Dr. Colony Ship recognizes human genders? Or is it "body types"? Will next patch bring pronouns like with Solasta? When, oh when will Sir Vince do their/them WOKE ZEIG HEIL!

Rogue Trader just did WOKE ZEIG HEIL! Is Colony Ship next?

There are 0 (in words: z-e-r-o) major or minor RPGs this year that haven't done their own little WOKE ZEIG HEIL!

Modern Game Devs are pathetic, both as programmers/designers and humans. The fact that Devs 20+ years ago did 10x more in 10x less time with small teams without any of modern engines, documentation or third-party code libraries (now even AI tools exist) says everything about time period we're all surviving these years

7 years in development and you couldnt link sound file with click of button in UI? In Unreal motherfucking Engine bloody 4? No wonder expecting anything even closely resembling Arcanum/OG Fallouts from modern devs is like demanding from Miltiades in AoD to build you a spaceship

What would 90s devs build with modern tools in 7 Years? I dunno, but I know I'd hear something when I click the button

Finished it this evening, don't think I will replay it, the ending I got was satisfying enough. Spoilers bellow:

I didn't side with any of the 3 factions, convinced all them to work together under the monks, so that the colonization wasn't half assed. In the end I decided to lead the scouting party to the surface to collect data about the planet.

Think this was the best ending possible. Peace between the factions, a collective effort to restore all ship systems essential to colonization. The colonizing effort is organized, with vaccines for potential diseases, study of the soil and life forms of the planet, etc

Trouble in paradise indeed. Absolutely unnecessary woke shit here and there (not much but it is still in the game), questionable (to say the least) game design decisions, far from perfect balance, walls of text...hmmmm :? Still a very strong contender for RPG of the year but will see.

Not even close to rpg of the year. RPG of the month maybe.

Can someone tell me what the fuck is the point of this learn by doing shit? Like what does it add to the game or the genre or whatever.

Why did my faction companion join my party at [Displeased: -10% skill gain]? I'm beloved by the faction she represents and it's not like I've had any other opportunities to endear myself to her.

Its a VD game, everyone hates you by default.
Probably has to do with your charisma, you are a socially awkward incel and nobody will ever love you.

Unfortunately, this game is decline.
This is not like the original Age of Decadence, or more recent games like Underrail, or what ever you might be thinking of when you hear classic RPG, or tactical turn based RPG. In those games you can get away with making a slightly sub-optimal, or even sub-optimal character. With games like Underrail it is hard to survive when you do this, but despite the brutality you can do it if you are smart and you use all the resources given to you. This game is not like that. It is very, very limited in what you can do in each section of the game; especially the start.

I can see what the developers of the game were going for, what they are trying to do. It is easy to see because they comment about it on nearly every review, and nearly every thread. More specifically, they post the builds you should use for this game. The most popular guides for this game are character builds and walkthroughs. Why? Because if you make your character even slightly poorly, even a little bit out of line with what the developers had in mind for the type of character wanted you to make, you will die, or get stuck and not be able to proceed.

It is fine to have a strong idea of how your game should be played. A good idea would be to lock off side sections of the game, extra bits full of extra stuff that you may not get into if your character does not fit just exactly right. But, this game gatekeeps... the entire game, almost from the start, if you do not make your character in line with what was envisioned for them by the devs.

I played through the game and beat it with as combat specialist that just killed things. It was boring and not fun. It was then interesting to go and check out the guides, and see how they wring every little bit of exp out of every single encounter in every single location in this game; and yet still come up short now.

The reason why I think this is because they are everywhere. In almost every review, in nearly every thread, etc. They will probably comment on this too. Normally that would be a good thing. The devs of a game giving feedback, helping people out, and communicating with players, that is fantastic! But never have I once read 'yeah, we did make that encounter a bit too hard, we will tweak it so it is a bit easier' or a 'yeah you are right, you should be able to loot those corpses there' or a 'yeah, that thing you did deserves some extra skill points as a reward.' It is always a justification of why they did things the way they did; always a double down, never a compromise. That is fine, it is their game, but honestly, I don't like this game.

I would like to say that in all of these hours of playing I had fun, but honestly, I didn't really. I was either bored out of my mind hyper focusing a killing character, or bored out of my mind hyper focusing on a talking character, or trying my best to have fun but failing and dying with everything else. If it does look like it interests you, perhaps get it on sale. But honestly, I could have done without the experience. If you are interested in this genre and type of game, best to spend your money on something like Pillars of Eternity, Kingmaker, Divinity Original Sin, or if you want something more difficult, Wasteland 2 or Underrail. These games are different from Colony Ship, in that they actually a lot of fun.

i feel this so hard, and am trying hard to shake the sunk cost fallacy. there's a lot of little things that i can't put my finger on that makes this game feel so off. i know off the top of my head i am growing to dislike how it fade cuts to conversations. it worked for AoD and rats, but it feels lazy in this game. i am enjoying it, but i don't love it and haven't played since last night and realizing i was gonna have to start over due to my build sucking ass, and i haven't had it occupy much of my grey matter. when i first played AoD, it took quite a bit for it to click and once it did i couldn't stop thinking about it when i wasn't playing. i will keep plugging away at it but i don't want to restart already. at least with underrail it was fun and not so much a chore to get to depot a, that was half the enjoyment trying to puzzle the build together.

It needs soul™. Pour as much soul into your game as possible. And don't be financial flagellant, with Canada tax system anything will cost 5x more then it does in reality. MOVE! At least as Company. Why not? You wanna do your patriotic duty and fund children Drag Queen story hours, endless foreign wars and assisted suicide booths, courtesy of government of Canada. I'm not joking, this is our reality

Got forced into combat. I'm a speech-based weakling so my character obviously isn't up to the task, but I've got some less-wimpy teammates at least.

Combat is fun but I am missing the sheer wealth of options available in AoD/Dungeon Rats. You really viscerally feel every hit in those games - both ones dealt to you, and ones you're dealing to enemies. Colony Ship combat is solid but it does feel a bit Wasteland 2/3-ish in that we're just sort of plugging away at each other from cover. I suppose that's just the nature of firearms-based combat. It's still pleasingly brutal, at least - my player character got taken out in the very first turn.

Fucking love Dungeon Rats, one of the most straight-up fun games of the last decade IMO.

At least 3 out of 4 (because we cant see 4th one, bet he also did) got LPs in Armor.

Even screens show that evasion is worthless, especially for full parties.

Balance.

What is turning you off from replaying it?
The factions and the setting.

The 3 major factions are not very interesting:

1. None of them offer an actual solution to colonization (which is the end goal of the ship journey);

2. None of them have stand out characters that make me want to root for the faction;

3. Few faction quests to explain their ideology and plans for the future. When you reach the habitat and start doing some quests, things escalate quickly, and a lot of the quests don't have continuity or a satisfying conclusion;

4. Speaking of ideology, I found that the Ship authority and mutiny factions have little to differentiate from one another, both are blood thirsty and authoritarian. The church was a wasted opportunity to have some truly religious nuts, they are just another power grab;

5. The mutants don't have a lot of content, which was a shame because the level was the most visually striking in the game;

6. The monks were the only one worried about the actual mission, but they didn't get a lot of development;

Lack of time and funds to develop the game vision further seems to be the major issue of the game. Unlike AoD which had a bunch of interesting locations, themes, characters and quests, Colony Ship seems half baked.

I wouldn't enjoy another game in this setting, would much prefer a return to AoD.
