I don't freelance.
I’m flexible. Unfortunately, my only relevant skill is writing. I can write quests, dialogue, characters, plotting, worldbuilding… I can do creative direction. Maybe amateur voice acting. I didn’t develop game design skills, unfortunately.

If it’s any consolation, I just want to do a tech demo to gauge interest.

I liked a guy's voice once and we were friends, but he was impossible to work with. He would agree to work on a project, would get super excited, throw around a bunch of ideas, then change his mind the next day and say he's going to concentrate on fixing his career, which he hated. Weird stuff. Then the war in Ukraine started, and he was in Ukraine, so he got drunk every day and started spamming me with dumb shit calling me a nazi scumbug and threatening to kill me, while I took it and tried to calm him down. Then, after half a year, I just called it quits and deleted him. It's hard to find a good writer, the good ones are artistic and inventive, but that comes with some attitude and irrationality.

I never had any interaction that extreme, but I have experience with flaky indecisive behavior. I don’t care too much what the story is, I just want to get things out there to prove it can be done.

So it sounds like are kind of at the "desire" phase? You just want to make something cool but have no plan at all.

I don’t have a professional portfolio, no, but I spent the last two years working on multiple plot outlines, story drafts, experimenting with dialogue, character backgrounds… I’m happy to fund my vanity projects out of my own pocket, too.

I’d rather not ask an AI to handle code, art and music.

I mean that medieval fantasy crpgs are oversaturated. There isn’t a lot of exploration into other genres beyond some cyberpunk and post-apocalypse inspired by Fallout and Cyberpunk 2077. Urban fantasy barely exists here.

As for the first line, Sword & Sorcery, you know? It's the cliché's that kill the genre, otherwise, you wouldn't even note the oversaturation.

Short description: “Magic and monsters are real, hiding from the muggles. You get to navigate a twisted underworld of magical fraternities and alliances.”

Longer description: “Magical creatures live in the modern world, hidden from muggles. The Dark predate on muggles, while the Light fight their excesses in an eternal uphill battle. The Dark align themselves into various cliques and fraternities that squabble with one another over scraps of power. The protagonist of our story is a relative newcomer thrown into a volatile political situation, but whose neutrality offers new opportunities. Pick from multiple backgrounds that grant various magical and mundane methods of solving problems. Are you a rich dilettante who wants for nothing or a soccer mom trying to make ends meet? A reluctant warlock or a leprechaun mafia boss? Build relationships with a variety of colorful characters, each with their own neuroses and dark secrets. A vivacious vampiress who conceals her desire beneath a business exterior, a Wall Street werewolf who refuses to let his wildness or anyone else’s be chained, a decadent dragon who desires nothing but to add more trinkets (including people) to his hoard, and more. I tried distilling it from my various docs and writing it in marketing speak.

I’m not sure what you consider novelty in this context. The Egyptian gods show up in a space pyramid and ask for gasoline to power their FTL drive? Cryptids descended from space aliens, Atlanteans and dinosaurs? Alien robots that inject people with nanites that turn them into pod people? Extorting protection money from innocent talking puppets? Alternate history where Vlad the Impaler is Victoria’s prince consort and organizes police responses to Unseelie terrorists? Otherworlds where sparkling golden palaces crawl across enormous webs on enormous legs like immense spiders?

Would you prefer X-Files style investigation of weird paranormal phenomena? Scifi action horror where replicants defend colonists from terminators and xenomorphs? Space opera where the galaxy UN tries to rebuild connections with the frontier after a century of war left them isolated? Military personnel waking from cryogenic stasis to find a world transformed by alien mutagens? A post-apocalyptic setting where intelligent mutant plants and animals with psychic powers compete with androids and cyborgs? A cyberpunk setting where the Earth is the middle of a climate apocalypse where there’s no ozone layer and humans resort to VR and bioware to survive an increasingly hostile planet? A world where the architecture was designed by Giger, Beksinski and Nihei where civilization progressed along very alien paths?

What are you looking for on the continuum between incomprehensible surreal weirdness and recognizable pop culture reference points? I can’t read your mind. I don’t know your preferences. I said very specifically I wanted to do something like Troika’s Bloodlines because I’m disappointed by the last two decades since its release being so lacking.

If you’re looking for something auteur like Ice Pick Lodge’s portfolio, then I’m probably not the best person to ask. Although I think I would enjoy trying the mental exercise.

The game takes place 10 years after the holocaust, when the Player Character is 27. Survival is possible as the bombs that fell upon the US are essentially Hiroshima-Nagasaki sized. The game takes place in Seattle.

Can you see how there is, I know it sounds pretentious, more quality to my note? IMHO, it's hardly a pitch, by the way.

I wasn't trying to make any claims about quality. I want to make something, get it criticized, and iterate on that.

I think you're confusing quality with specificity and detail. So you want specific details about the background and setting? I can do that.

As it stands in my notes thus far... The setting is superficially similar to a city in the United States (real or fictional), sometime between the 1980s and the 2020s or some unreal anachronistic mix thereof. The distinction is that monsters, or nightcrawlers as I like to call them, are real and live secretly among the muggle populace.

Several such nightcrawlers have formed various fraternities and political parties that have different ideals for how to manage their little underworld. Two of these groups drive the main conflict of the story in question. On one side you have conservative meritocratic types who believe that power must be earned and have instituted a series of rules and brutally enforce these rules... but apply said rules selectively and in ways that benefit those with more power and connections at the expense of those with less. You need to be very cautious and brutal to get ahead among them, even if you follow the rules exactly. On the other side you have more liberal collectivist types who believe in sharing power democratically and not brutally punishing rule breakers, while ironically still responding best to intimidating displays of power and violence while supposedly preaching egalitarianism. In practice this means that criminal and paranormal activity runs amuck in neighborhoods they've claimed and this attracts attention from both police and monster hunters who have to clean up after them.

This sort of conflict isn't new, but the few times I've seen it the writer doesn't really give much reason why the sides are fighting or the pros and cons of each approach. At least in the few urban fantasy games. New Vegas made it a point to give the factions pros and cons.

There are other associations with their own beliefs and goals, but in general these groups either align themselves with one of the two political blocs or stay out of their way. This results in a fair amount of friction within the blocs since they ally out of convenience more than because their beliefs and goals really align.

You can probably notice the social commentary easily, but that wasn't intentional. It's meant to be a more general freedom versus control conflict because that seems to be the most relatable compared to other possible conflicts like primitivism versus technophilia or... I forgot what else I was going to list.

Anyway, to distinguish the characters from the obvious vampire bias in fiction, the nightcrawler community includes all sorts of species including shapeshifters, fairies, ghosts, magicians, undead, demons, golems, mutants and so on. While their species has basic significance, it doesn't define their personality or who they associate with. For example, the mad scientist newsletter accepts members of any species who have an interest in mad science and sharing their peer reviewed research in the journal.

The tone is one of ham, comedy and irreverence. The characters are supposed to be colorful and larger than life, theatrical and neurotic. The nightcrawlers routinely tell self-aggrandizing lies about their collective and personal history, such as claiming to be descended from Dracula, assuming the identity of a historical figure like St. Germain or Joan d'Arc and fighting other impersonators to the death, or inventing self-styled "global councils" that hold no actual power. Despite this, there would also be movements of levity, tragedy and even straight up horror to contrast (or mix with) the comedy.

So... Am I getting anywhere?

I'm not sure whether video games are that good a medium for modern problems. Yet since it's set in a faux-modern day setting, why not. I'd offer freedom against control in a different way, imagine the Scottish clansmen. Perhaps a play on the original Bard's Tale, a Nightcrawler magician took control of the city and locked everyone in? If the characters in the game feel strongly about something and are unifying against it, the player might as well.

My thoughts are, define the Nightcrawlers. Kind of like the 7 clans of vampires in the WoD of V:tM fame. If each species of a Nightcrawler stands out as interesting, you're going somewhere with this.
My go-to choices would probably be some variation of the Universal Classic Monsters: vampires, werewolves, (re)animates, freaks of nature, mummies, witches, transhumans, whatever. But what I want to do differently is place more emphasis on a nightcrawler's personal beliefs rather than treat them as cliques whose personalities are defined by species. I wanted to have more interesting factions, similar to what Planescape: Torment did. Your species would affect what your powers are, but your choice of faction would affect what you use your powers for.

My current idea was to limit the player character option to just vampire with a choice of bloodline, as a cynical ploy to attract those fans and reduce my workload. The other species would be limited to the NPCs. Without knowing the actual mechanics I can't tailor them yet.

I didn't want to portray either side as clearly good or bad, but that suggestion immediately creates an obvious good/evil dichotomy that goes against the impression I wanted to give. I'm not using this as a vehicle for modern problems, any resemblance is coincidental. The idea is that you have several political parties, each with their own beliefs, motives and goals that may or may not get along. These aren't clearly good or evil, but merely presented as choices with different pros and cons for the player to evaluate as suits their tastes.

But I already believe that scope is way too ambitious for whatever budget I can realistically pull together. At this point in time, I have no ambitions further than a game scope like this or this.

Changed world scaling from 16384 units across to 1048576 to allow for finer placement of cities or other world objects compared to tile borders. This necessitated some revisiting of scaling code elsewhere (some of it was rather brittle) and in the process of doing so I went back and cleaned up some camera code that worked, but was kind of convoluted (it is now much more simple). I also revisited the zoom-to-cursor code, which I had never been happy with (it was somewhat erratic in where exactly the camera would zoom in to. Compared to some other games and their priorities on how to handle zoom-to-cursor and eventually decided I favoured the "cursor keeps its place in the world, camera moves relative to that" approach. Implemented that, which took a while since I'm not good at math and had to spend a while with a sheet of paper figuring out what exactly I needed to calculate to get the camera where it should be.

I also decoupled camera speed from framerate by comparing the delta time acquired in the camera's update function to a theoretical 1.0f/60.0f that the camera's speed is scaled at; if it's low (high framerate) then the interpolation accumulator isn't incremented by as much. If it's high (low framerate) then the interpolation accumulator is incremented by more. This keeps camera motion at the same distance per time regardless of framerate. A very old todo, but it's done now.

Began switching some containers in the engine from std::unordered_map to std::map, because while std::map has worse performance, it's sorted, and as far as I can tell std::unordered_map isn't guaranteed to have the same order on different compilers or architectures unless very specific precautions are taken (and even then there's no actual guarantee in the standard). Which could be a problem for multiplayer some day - so rather than leave a potential landmine to discover later, I've just gone with the sorted structure, and if there are performance issues I'll optimize further. I'd rather try to fix a performance issue than hunt down an obscure desync bug years down the line.

In most cases every value in such a container is a struct which contains an id that actually is the same as its key, so theoretically, just using std::vector with std::find for everything might be better - but I couldn't find any performance comparisons for getting an item in std::map by key vs getting an item in std::vector by finding a matching id member, and didn't feel like benchmarking it myself.
