He said that they spent the previous years working on a completely new engine for the title.
Stop.

I think they don't have any ideas about the actual game.
Things like the "Space Monkey program" confirm this.

The funny thing is that based on the trailer we could have already had a BG&E2 before the Ubisoft Open-World Formula™ became solidified if they just developed the game with PC in mind instead of consoles. It's not like massive world simulations are the best type of game for consoles, otherwise you get X: Rebirth. Elite worked just fine on a fucking BBC Micro as well.
It doesn't actually look like they actually have a game, it looks like they have a concept and a tech demo and are trying to go from there (pretty much where they were with BG&E2 in 2009), they don't even seem to have decided on how the game will exactly play, protagonist (good thing, because if they went with what they presented they would've cried about Sales again) or what it'll exactly be about. As someone said before, it sounds more like Molyneux-ish tales of ambition so far...
They pretty much confirmed that...

Beyond Good & Evil 2's creative director says the game is at 'day zero of development'
LOL, this just showes that they are not closer to making this game than they were at 2009, when they released their first trailers. And now every idiot is cheering for this game as it was in actual development.

The first game ended on a massive cliffhanger and now the sequel is announced to actually be a prequel. :despair:

The lead probably doesn't care about the game that much and is making what management orders, the lead is now describing beyond good and evil 2 as gta in space. Ubisoft wants the GTA online money and has ordered one of their unused IPs to be converted for the task.

The 'prequel' will almost certainly become a soft-reboot of the series too. Ubisoft is afraid to create new IPs and are going to tie it to an old IP like bethesda did recently with prey, which had nothing to do with the original.

Don't forget also that Ancel must have been pretty busy with his other upcoming (?) project, Wild.

There was actually more at E3 than just the cutscene:

We saw an early build of Beyond Good and Evil 2 which was more like a tech demo. Here's what we saw behind-closed-doors.

My team has the sexiest and deadliest waifus you can recruit.
probably will be 90% randomly generated useless shit with 10% buildings and stations where you get your quests from that are present on every habitable planet like with most of these games

That's also not live gameplay. Could possibly be in engine, but I doubt it.

Wonder how many project leads got fired over this games development

Every info gathered so far:

Setting
  • Plays roughly 50 years before the events of BGE1, "One generation before Jade was born" (gamereactor artwork tour 4:00)
  • Set in the 24th century, India and China have become global superpowers in the 22nd century, further devloping CRISPR to create human-animal hybrids as slave labourers for their interstellar colonization (same as above)
  • System 3 is rich in resources and worlds in the habitable zone, a place full of spacefaring commerce (same as above)
  • In combination with fled hybrid slaves like Knox, this causes an advent of space piracy with very diverse crews (same as above)
  • There is a class system between hybrids, domesticated being seen as lesser (twitch interview at 4:00)
  • Different hybrid species have different cultures and languages, "Peyjin" is a deity in the Sus Sapiens mythology, inspiring the name Pey'j (4:20 as above)
  • The story will focus on the revolution of the Hybrids, which ultimately leads to them being accepted as equals in BGE1 (gameplay release announcement comment)
  • There will be "Legendary characters" comparable to Zelda which will drive the overall story, ancestors of and characters from BGE1 are supposedly key characters you meet (engadget interview 1:50, gamereactor article)
  • System 4 will be visited as well, its history explored (Concept art of Knox & Shani, in the comments)
  • A "story across generations", whether this means it takes several in-game years or that it just sets up the events of BGE1 isn't specified (picture of Knox statue, in the comments)
Gameplay
  • Space opera/piracy RPG incorporating the elements of BGE1: 3rd person main character, friends, combat, vehicles, exploration (specifically travel and 1st person photography), stealth (also dialogue, questing, collectibles and leveling), while allowing for Co-OP (gameplay release time announcementcomments, gamestar article)
  • Creating own character at the beginning, can be human or hybrid with advantages and disadvantages for each species, e.g. discrimination against hybrids (ign article)
  • Start out as lowlife pirate with a shitty space tuktuk, rising to legendary pirate captain over the course of the game, a "triplet" RPG where you evolve yourself, your crew and your ship, XP system for that in place (gamestar article, kotaku article)
  • Progressing in the story and exploring the world (like rescuing a slave hybrid) will offer opportunities to enlist crewmembers, which will evolve themself autonomously and also help your spaceship evolve (ign article, gamereactor article)
  • Many minor characters will be randomly generated and unique to each player's game (ign article as above)
  • While the same overall story for everyone, the game offers several opportunities to approach quests and finishing the game in different ways (gamereactor article)
  • Actions are supposed to have repercussions, such as disturbing a supply lane between cities having consequnces (ign article)
  • Mix of story and open world has been compared to Witcher 3 and Breath of the Wild, the space combat to Star Fox (gamereactor as above, gamestar article)
  • Ability to go from character scale out into space without loading screens, possibly within seconds, and then traveling between worlds. I'ts compared to No Man's Sky, but emphasized that they want to focus more on few, specifically designed worlds, while still allowing some parts to be intelligently generated à la Dwarf Fortress (kotaku article)
  • Voyager engine simulates entire solar systems (at least System 3 and 4 confirmed), which naturally results in day-and-night cycles (kotaku article as above, comment on announcement for gameplay release)
  • Grappling gauntlet and jetpack from trailer are examples of using the verticality of cities which will also be in the game (Ancel commentating trailer, 0:40, 3:25)
  • Bigger spaceships can be considered home or garage of the player, customizable with e.g. trophies (kotaku article)
  • vehicles each have 5 velocity settings, e.g. ranging from 10 to 120 km/h for the jetpack. The acceleration between these is dependent on the "character attributes" of the vehicle. Overall speeds may range from 4 to 1 million km/h, which is a major reason for how long they took to develop the engine (gamestar article)
  • Going into atmospheres too fast may cause you to burn up (same as above)
  • Taking a picture will create an object with metadata (location, what's pictured etc), which you can show to NPCs who will react to it. Pictures may be shared between players (in Co-Op) to aid progression (twitch interview after E3)
  • Game can be played completely solo and offline, but playing Co-Op (they experimented with up to 15 players) is possible any time, this has been compared to Destiny with many more gameplay elements, should feel like getting help from your comrades in BGE1 (kotaku article, twitch interview after E3)
Tidbits
  • The beta encourages players to shape the game from the ground up, starting with just controls and extending to inspiring the cultural setting of different worlds (blog post on beta)
  • Teased numerous times that Dakini is related to Jade, also that "they didn't say you wouldn't see Jade or Pey'j" in this game (gamereactor artwork tour, gamereactor article, concept art of Knox and shanicomment by thedetectivexx)
  • The origins of Carlson and Peters are something they want to go into (gameplay release announcedcomment by souffrax)
  • Christophe Héral is confirmed to return for the OST (Meet the team behind the game)
  • They are building the world creatively like they would a big movie (interview on twitch after E3)
  • Looks of the trailer estimated to be reached by the end of the year (kotaku article)
  • Beta hopefully starting by the end of the year (same as above)
  • Fully playable demo slated for E3 2018 (same as above)
  • No exclusivity planned (same as above)
  • Addressing concerns for mature dialogue: It'll be characteristic for few characters, they want to experiment with a variety of different ones. Ancel says he considered making dialogue optionally family-friendly, compared to Brutal Legend (concept art of Knox and Shani, comment by jamesbutteryqp)
  • Glass structures will be destructible, e.g. headlight in the trailer and police barricade colliding with building (Ancel commentating the trailer)
  • A Police system is planned, Ancel compared it to "GTA in space" (twitch interview after e3, kotaku article)
  • Cities are constructed such that the upper echelons are advertisement-free and dedicated to spirituality (trailer breakdown with ancel)
  • Mothership represented by an NPC entity similar to Secundo in the first game (trailer breakdown with Ancel)

Might be able to play this by the time I'm sixty. But Ancel will probably be dead by then.
