The mind-bogglingness of Oblivion's character creation.

The OP's capitalization style is truely avantgarde!

Over there.
From the same thread, yet more proof... Proof of what you may ask? I'll leave that up to the individual.

Still the same thread:

try playing morrowind with the same 7, ugly faces per gender/race over and over again. get backt o me when you grow sick of repetition

If only Bethesda was aware of this, Morrowind could be the best game in the universe. Fortunately they fixed it in Oblivion, and I'm sure it will be even better in Fallout 3.

Man, we make a three-page joke thread with the best funnies we can muster, and that guy just blows us all out of the water. Applause for the comedic genius.

It's not Just the Gibbering monkeys On that board, the articulate Can also Amaze:

Let me first address the role play issue. No game gives one everything one would like to react to, but many games give one something to role play. In MW, my character could take an interest in what the game provided: Dunmer culture, lore, and politics, and Dwemer history. In Arena, my character could take an interest in what the game provided: the differences and complexities of architecture in different regions. In Knights of the Old Republic, my character could readily take an interest in what the game offered—exceptionally deep and complex NPCs. In Arcanum and Fall-Out, in spite of backwards graphics, even for the time, my character could take an interest in a complex visual environment. (An interesting visual environment is not a matter solely of technology, but of game design. The ancient and primitive Dark Lands game has a vastly more interesting visual environment than innumerable more technologically advanced games to my mind.)

As with the above games, I think role play in Ob is best oriented to what is interesting in Ob—a complex and lovely visual environment. I invariably make my Ob characters people with some kind of interest in this environment—botanists, painters, poets, naturalists, nature-worshippers.

This guy is actually proposing that one can role-play teh graphics!

Aside from that, I can see how the Oblivion-style 'role player' ("I am Morhpaneinalian'2wqn, son of Naked_Lunch...") can larp a botanist ("I collect plants! Come ye to view the collection of roots in my Botanist's Barrow!"), I can see how they play a 'naturalist' ("I walk this land with NO CLOTHING, sniff my impunity, heathen city-slickers!"), and even a 'nature worshipper' ("I jump before thee, o great tree! Now I shall CROUCH my respect to you, oh mighty shrub!"), but how in the FUCK does this guy play characters in Oblivion that are PAINTERS!?

And POETS??!?

Well yeah, don't you? Anyway most of the roleplaying isn't actually done in front the PC, you moron. You use the computer to choose your character's nose shape, eyebrow color and star sign. The real action is day-dreaming on the bus to school.

Painters - carry a Paintbrush and press Print Screen all the time.
Poet - oh, look, a rock: "Thus the rock shattered / Before my awesome power / Coz paper beats rock"

I play a really old Dunmer, who lost his memories due to torture (Physical and Magical) while in prison. He knows his name, and who he was, but has no memories of his former life as a Morag Tong Assasin, and a member of Great House Telvanni. He must make his way in this strange new world the best he can. He knows that he was once a Nightblade, so he joins the Mages Guild to try and regain part of his Magical past. He knows he was once an assasin, but the Dark Brotherhood is the arch-enemy of the Morag Tong, so he will not join them. And, this strange "conscience" thing keeps getting in his way. In the past, he used Telvanni Magic and Alchemy to extend his normal life span. All this knowledge has been lost to him, so he is aging at a dramatic rate... And knows he will die in a matter of months of old age... unless... Vampirism! But how to balance his new Vampiric life with his Mages Guild duties? And who ordered the torture in prison that made him lose his past?

And just when you think he's done
See. None of this is in the game. Not one bit. It is all in my head, and the free form nature of Oblivion makes it come to life. Every quest I play, I balance the pro's and Con's of the moraility of it. And believe me, Bram Verrin is not always moral.
I hope I never have to deal with this person so I dont have to find out what else it's in his head.

Edit: i just read the one below it. Im getting chills. :?

Yea, it's so great that this awesome game set in a world where a Daedra lord is actively trying to destroy everything so nicely puts his plans on hold while you run around picking daisys.
Lord Chambers said:
Doesn't count though, since he posts here as well :)
Actually, I agree, the main quest is not compulsory. Yes, the Daedra are attacking, but just assume that you started the game somehow else. Or better, download an alternative start mod. Thus, it's not really you who has to save the world.

Or better, uninstall that piece of shit and go play a game that you don't have to nigger-rig with a bunch of fan-made shit by guys named GokuDwemer6667 in order to get it to any sort of playability.

Proof of how awesome RAI is can be found right here. Or, if you feel you lose a little bit of intelligence and/or sanity simply by visiting the forums, here's the actual post:

all i can say is that im amazed. after i dled the vile lair, of course i had to buy all the accesssories. well those arent very cheap now, are they? so i sold a lot of my valuable stuff (only the things that didnt mean too much to me) so i could afford everything. well one of the things i sold was the base ring of retribution. i sold it to hamlof red-tooth, the owner of red diamond jewelry. well its been a while and needless to say, i got bored of deepscorn hallow. so i went on a little killing spree and one of my victims just happen to be ol' red-tooth. after looting his body, guess what i found! i found the base ring of retribution! holy [censored]! i sold him the ring and he actually wore it! wow eh?

Now just give that a few moments to sink in...

Over there.
I seem to remember this in Morrowind. In factr, it seemed like every time I sold one of those goofy looking Redoran helms, the storekeeper just HAD to put it on immediately.

Radiant!

You sell an item to a vendor, and said item keeps put in their inventory? That. Is. Totally. Awesome.

Welcome to the Forums.

The characters in "Oblivion" do some pretty amazing things.

It's excellent that you were able to get your ring back too.

Don't be put off by the trolls on the boards trying to make fun of your excitement.

Stuff like that is what makes "Oblivion" such a great game.

You've alot more surprises and treats as you play through the game.

You should try following some of the characters around for a day and see what they get up to.

It can be very interesting.

Mind you, follow the wrong one and it can be a little dull, so do so at your own risk.

The coolest thing an NPC ever did with me was suggest she was going to hunt some bandits and that I could follow if I wanted.

This was not a quest.

She just said it. I just followed.

She took me to a bandit lair and we found a bunch of bandits and killed them all.
