Maybe this failure will teach EA that they should first make a fun game, and only then consider possibly adding microtransactions?

It's been interesting watching how populated BF4 servers are. There were way more players in the weeks building up to 2042's release. Then there were very few as everyone went off to play 2042. That didn't last long. Now if anything there's more BF4 players than before all this started.

concurrent playercount has been dipping below 1000

Struggling to think of similar-budget games that have flopped this hard. Less than a half year after release, online game, and it lost 99% of its peak playerbase.

There are more people playing D:OS2, a thoroughly mediocre, 5 years old cRPG. You'd think D:OS fans should already have played that to death enough to bury it, but I guess not.

Games, especially MP games, live and die by their launch and their immediate post-launch support. When they do a belly flop from the Empire State building in that regard, there's no coming back.

I knew the launch had been bad, but never suspected it was this disastrous :

meh
Not sure how he can acknowledge that DICE lost a core part of their team who went to make their own studio then skip right on to "EA bad" without acknowledging the implications of the current DICE devs being shit at their jobs.
There's this false belief in gaming that devs are never at fault for whatever weird reason.

Seems like a typical Battlefield release to me - horribly buggy and undercooked at launch but after a year or so of patches and updates it's finally quite fun.

It seriously needs some more maps though. BFV ended up with about 20 maps and so far BF2042 has 9.

Free weekend on all platforms and I still can't find a match at peak hours without enabling crossplay and 60% of the match being bots. The map reworks are mostly good and I like the new ones they've added since launch but specialists still suck.

Battlefield 2042 will no longer receive a new season, EA focuses on new Battlefield games

EA has officially announced that Battlefield 2042 will end with the current Season 7 and the publisher now wants to focus on the planned "Battlefield Universe".

When Battlefield 2042 was released in November 2021, player opinions were very mixed. Among other things, numerous bugs, an immature progression system and unbalanced maps were criticized. Metacritic rates the game with a Metascore of 68, while the User Score is a subterranean 2.2 points.
Battlefield 2024 received six new seasons until October 2023. In the meantime, fans have a better opinion, which is reflected in the Steam charts by increasing player numbers. Nevertheless Season 7, which started on March 19, is the last season. In a blog post EA comments on this as follows:
"We know this news may be disappointing. However, as we looked at what the future of the series requires, it became clear that it's time for us to shift our resources and focus to fully commit to what's next."
Despite increasing player numbers, EA does not seem to see a future for Battlefield 2042. According to the publisher, the game will continue to be supplied with new challenges, events and modes, but will no longer receive a new season. EA now wants to focus on "what's next". To this end, EA has brought Motive Studio on board - the developers of Dead Space and Star Wars: Squadrons - who, according to the blog post, are currently building a team to focus solely on Battlefield.

Several projects in the works

EA and DICE had already announced at the end of 2022 to create a kind of "Battlefield universe" in collaboration with Ridgeline Games, in which various games in the series are linked together. There are apparently several projects in the works. It is not known exactly what Motive is working on.
The latest information on a new Battleflied game comes from the well-known leaker Tom Henderson, who has a long history of accurate leaks and is considered a credible source. As Henderson reported at the end of February on Insider Gaming, Battleflied 7 is currently in the early concept phase. The game is set to return to its roots by once again limiting the number of players to 64 and bringing back the four-class system. There will also be a free battle royale mode. According to Henderson, the scenario is set in the present day, between 2025 and 2030.
