Another cringe of BG3: why are goblins Lawful Evil instead of Neutral Evil (which they have always been in the past)?

My brother and I were scratching our heads when we realized we could just talk our way into the goblin camp instead of killing them all. Since when do goblins just let strangers wander around their villages like this? This is not D&D.
LOL does it actually state that they're Lawful Evil?

That would be the most hilarious lore retcon ever. Thieving, murdering little shits who care about societal structures.

On the fence about this game. This isn't a deal breaker but a pet peeve of mine is when a game gives recruitable NPCs these grandiose backstories. Then they join your party and they are low level weaklings. Some games also do this with the player character. From what I was reading online, every single origin character fits this mold.

I dont know about 5E, but every past monster manual pegged goblins as Neutral Evil. So I meet these Marxist goblins, and they want to have conversations and they want to lock you in a jail for stealing their loot, and I'm like WTF.
Goblins used to be mindless cannon fodder for level 1 heroes, not village people for you to trade with.

they actually try to explain that, i know that Wyll said something about him being able to solo an Owlbear easily in the past, but the mind flayer parasite made him weak, so they explain as the parasite making them weaklings

Halsin's level 5, which makes him one of the biggest dick NPCs of Act 1.

Pretty much, but at least Gale looks like a normal bloke, standing out like a sore thumb in your travelling circus. Wyll too until a story event that happens early.

LOL. I Wonder if Morrowind was launched today. If Baiuzo's Gate 3 is not woke enough for journos.

In Morrowind :

  • Bretons start the game with 50 INT and Redguards, with 30.
  • Redguard is clearly based in Africans and Bretons in Europeans.
  • In Mages Guild, there aren't a single Redguard but among Thieves, their leader is a redguard.
  • God's Fire/God's Frost, the strongest non custom destruction spell is so mana expensive that no redguard could cast it with his base magic, only if he has help from items to get more magic than he has. Bretons can cast it.
  • There are a powerful mage in Telvanni house which clonned himself into female daughters and uses his daughters as sex slaves and are his "brides".
  • The rival of mages guild, the house Telvanni build towers with no accessible way to reach their quarters without a spell(or potion) of levitation as they don't wanna to be bothered by lowly people that can't cast this spell. They literally sees themselves above everyone else.
  • They also practice slavery
  • One of their quests involve quelling an slave rebellion
  • Dark Elves have Dark Skin due a literal curse by Azura.
  • Everyone is very racist in the game

They picked the most baffling fucking place to stick the Trans Positivity Did I Mention That I'm Trans Yet npc ever. NPC awkwardly voiced by PhilosophyTube. The "validate your identity" NPC is in the church of Shar. The organization that brainwashed and groomed Shadowheart, and deprived her of her identity to suit the organization's whims.

Lucretious is in a literal circus and doesn't spend her entire conversation time talking about being a drag queen. In fact Lucretius mentions or implies this exactly zero times. You just have to know that she's being voiced by a dude.

Nocturne is giving a "Choosing my identity is awesome!" spiel in the temple of a church that is into abusing people by grooming children and manipulating their identities.

Sven's tribute to WotWC. It could be worse, but it could be better. It is a trend. Heh, I still remember people who argued "Mizhena is only ONE character, why you have problem with that?".

But circus is appropriate place for a character like this.

This is both, a joke and a serious post.

That's was my point. Very appropriate place. It seems natural.

  • Underage: My memory's hazy but afaik you can't go lower than 18 in char creator so I call bullshit.
  • Pornstar: Done from a satirical standpoint and was constantly making fun out of the porn industry.
  • Childkiller: Arguably the worst trait to get in the game and most people would refuse to talk to you afterward or ever attack you on sight.
  • Gravedigger: Another thing people would get pissed at you for doing.
  • Drug addicted, gay: Not really a controversial issue imo.
  • Married: Wut? Why's that considered fucked up?
  • Slaver: Again, another trait that would lock you out of a lot of quests although it does open up the slaver questline.
  • Bet butthole in armwrestling against a super mutant: That's just hilarious. And again, wasn't glorified.

One of those cases in which people can not make distinctions because they either don't know or understand the context. For them its just "Well it was in this game and approved by you guys so why not in this game that I like?". But if you want trannies in BG3, that is fine, but have ingame characters have their own opinions on this including some who will think you're a weirdo and treat you as such. * sigh * But then it becomes a hate crime.

I honestly hate the "What offends me today" game.

It's because of the Absolute religion, which is a convenient excuse to erase borders and make all these various races tolerate each other and get along "for the greater good". You'll see bugbears, ogre, etc, also behaving this way.

It's because of the Absolute religion, which is a convenient excuse to erase borders and make all these various races tolerate each other and get along "for the greater good". You'll see bugbears, ogre, etc, also behaving this way.

Regardless of whether there is a story reason for this, this change to the way classically mindless evil monsters behave feels totally alien to the Dungeons & Dragons setting this game is supposed to portray. And, yeah, I think "The Absolute" is just a convenient excuse to have talking furries everywhere.

I made the comparison earlier that BG3 really feels like Guardians of the Galaxy (or one of the latter Marvel movies). Every creature you can imagine talks and behaves like just another NPC to be recruited or negotiated with. That's not the spirit of D&D to me, I don't care what spin you try to put on it. You've betrayed the very core of this gaming system.

D&D to me was the dichotomy between the mundane and the fantastical and the interaction between the two. Sane humanoids gather a party to delve into a dungeon (a hellish place of evil) to kill stuff and get their loot. That's ultimately what the core of the game is. BG1 & BG2 basically followed this model. BG3 does not.

I think that change was starting around the time 3E came along. Admittedly is was at that time centered on more special creatures. Nearly every evil bad guy in D&D now had a purpose and personality.
