Can't speak for Lycra Suit, but somehow Elden Ring managed to be literally as pretty as a painting, and extremely colorful, without looking like clown vomit.

I don't even get this idea that color means cartoon.

Also what's with the Bethesda NPCs? Isn't one company having terrible, misshapen designs for characters enough? Did the world really need another?

Avowed is like GreedFall — you also play with a fungus on your face. But the first one is an AAA game, while the second is just AA.However, they share a similar peak player count at launch.

Seeing roguey and infinitron in damage control coping on this thread is better than anything obsidian has made since 2010.
Yeah, you don't have to tell me twice...

Also, I am so fucking sick of those generic, tumblr-like fantasy races.
Goddamn, can't they MAKE an interesting race that is not a derivative of generic fantasy green orcs, blue elves, anything else?
You know, something like the Thri kreen from Dark Sun, or perhaps even an incorporeal race?

There's nothing inherently wrong with your standard fantasy races. After all they're usually evolution of various kinds of mythological/fable creatures that people usually like to see. The biggest problem is that since at least 10 years ago for some reason writers decided that writing these creatures as having distinct cultures is passe. So now they're all just short humans, humans with pointy ears, bulky humans etc. Even if they've added an incorporeal race it would hardly matter because they would talk and behave exactly like current-day Californians.

Still playing this, and the later areas of the game look at lot better than the earlier areas. They take away the washed-out-bullshit filter and let the visuals have some vibrancy and colour, which can look nice.

I find myself having fun when it's just me and my mostly-silent companions in a dungeon, but every time the story rears its head or you have to talk to an NPC, the game shits itself. My impression of the game has gone from "this is shit" to "this is shit but it's shit because of about four key terrible design choices that didn't need to be the case", which is infuriating.

Obsidian need to go out of business fire these writers. The same dopey idiots who fucked up TOW have done it again. You can 100% tell it's the same people and their writing alone is enough to turn this from "shallow but mindlessly enjoyable ARPG" to "big pile of shit". Not because of any "woke"-ness or w/e people fret about, but rather just because they're genuinely bad writers who can't pick a tone and stay with it, feel the need to inject humour that has a 0% hit rate, can't come up with antagonists that aren't one-dimensional, can only write characters that fit hackneyed archetypes, and can't come up with a plot that doesn't follow the same beats as every other piece of genre fiction released in the last 50 years.
