Christians in feudal Japan were often tied up by their feet and hung down a pit, usually one with smelly stuff inside. They'd be left to dangle in darkness, alone with the stench, for hours until they renounced their faith. One arm was left free for the purpose of letting them knock to signal their willingness to renounce.

To be a Christian is to not fear death, or martyrdom. Be it lions, a pit of fire, or a mock crucifixion. The Christian is resolute in his faith in the Almighty, and trusts in Him that the suffering will be short and that his soul will be accepted into Heaven. The torturer in this drawing has no such peace. His faith denies him everything, even his soul. He will torture until he believes he is "reincarnated" and forced to try again.
