Storyfags are guilty of shit like "Story Mode", interactive movies and in general the concept that game playing is something you have to suffer through or skip if possible to get to the story.

I wouldn't say that. If anything, your traditionally non-genre players aka fabled "wider audience" getting into the genre are responsible for that. Or should I say they're are the reason "baby mode" difficulties get added. Because, you know, god forbid someone new to the genre has to learn something new to enjoy or be competent at said thing. Everything should conform to what they previously played and lose its identity in the process. In this particular case, they turn into RPG storyfags after they get spoonfed story and nothing else.

Story can barely make up for really bad gameplay but amazing gameplay can make up for an almost non-existant story (e.g. KotC)

Altho of course I love a good story too ;)

Depends largely on what the game is about and whether it's bad stuff is tolerable enough. For example, Arcanum's combat was too frequent and too shit for me to play it, while PST's was not.
While not strictly an RPG, I quit borderlands because of the annoying and horrendeous writing.

Basically, OP is a faggot and there is more than only two camps.

Gameplay is what makes games, games. While they can be taken to a whole other level of art & entertainment with a good story, nailing the gameplay should always be the priority (equal to or greater than story), otherwise call your creation an interactive novel, not so much a game.

Storyfag. If the story is shit, I can't see myself playing the game for long unless it is extremely, extremely entertaining. But if the story and setting are really cool, I can stand crap gameplay.

Exactly my thoughts.

If I were to prioritize the aspects of a game it would be like this:
  1. Gameplay;
  2. Content - the Activities (Quests, Missions), Level Design and Exploration;
  3. Presentation - Graphics, Artwork and it's implementation in the game, Sound Effects and Music;
  4. Story
Yes prefer a good presentation over graphics. Why? Well for me what in Dark Souls or Amnesia gave me their strong atmosphere was through their level design and presentation.
Yes the story also contributes and yes, if a game as an interesting story I will enjoy it. But to me that the last thing that should matter to both to the developors of a game (unless of course they are failed writers/directors).

Because when somebody plays a game, they are "wasting" their time interacting with the game's world. And that's why Gameplay and it's Content should be the most important thing in any game.
So for me if those two aren't any good, then the game it's shit. And that why find ridicoulous to see Planescape Torment in any "Best RPG's Ever" list (specially number one).

Setting is the most important element in CRPGs since it ends up dictating gameplay, content, presentation and narrative. If it doesn't it's likely a shit game.

Depends of what the OP mean by storyfag, I can't play a TellTale game, doesn't matter how good the story is, I don't like to be exposed to awful gameplay for a story. Games like Planescape, Bloodlines and Morrowind for example have strong lore and stories but they have enough meat on them to not be clickfest graphic novels. I hate those story heavy walking simulators with a passion, their designers should be castrated just for poluting steam but I don't believe story is something that can be easily ignored, an awful story can make you mad on how the writer is an imbecile and reduce the enjoyment of the game by a great deal.

I don't usually care for the storyline itself, but I'd always prefer a unique setting with a flawed (but still playable) mechanics than an awesome mechanics in a generic fantasy crap setting.

So what does that makes me?

Also, voted OP is a fag because of the 'read the original post first' on title.

Yeah I'm the same, in a RPG I give more importance to the setting over gameplay and even story.

Storyfag. Didn't you read the original post?

I guess not...

Gameplay is what makes games, games. While they can be taken to a whole other level of art & entertainment with a good story, nailing the gameplay should always be the priority (equal to or greater than story), otherwise call your creation an interactive novel, not so much a game.

As long as there is a fail state then it's a game. Also just because you're a storyfag that doesn't mean you don't value the gameplay, it just means you give more importance to the story, setting, etc.

Depends of what the OP mean by storyfag,

Read the original post... it's right there in the title.

I have to add a few things:

If the setting is 'unique' but the gameplay ends up being just fighting enemies with a sci-fi version of fighter/mage/thief (like KotOR or when Korean MMOs gets a little bit creative), it still sucks.

What I mean when I say I tolerate flawed mechanics is that I'm fine with flaws like unbalanced mechanics or game being too easy if I get a gameplay that few other RPG has.

In fact before I know of non-fantasy RPGs like Fallout and Deus Ex I tend to avoid RPG because I associated the word with magicians throwing fireball on each other, and I wasn't a fantasy fan back then (And still isn't).

Today I am able to enjoy the more typical fantasy RPG but I'd still prefer a more original setting with a gameplay that makes use of that original setting.

Also, basically I just said that Star Wars sucks and OP is still a faggot.

While having story is fine, gameplay is where its at. I could forgive some compromise in mechanical part but I really dont give a shit if a story is good or bad.

I did quit Renowned Explorers whose whole visual design made me puke after a while. That was 10 bucks down the drain.

I used to say story, but then I realized that even the best games touted for their story usually have second rate writing. Now I'm more in the gameplay camp. If you want a story read a book or watch a movie. If you want a game play a game.
