You just want to cover you ass with this. Pussy. After that monocled reply to the guy, this is disappointing. As such, everyone needs to be advised of the following:
1. All of you should refrain from making remarks that are illegal (usually the ones of a "defamatory, untrue, threatening, and damaging" kind). If you do make such remarks, and there is an issue, you will be held personally responsible and we will have no qualms passing your details on to a lawyer so that they can take any action they deem necessary (and is within their legal right).
That means we may be legally required to give a lawyer IP addresses and timestamps, along with your registered email address or other details about your account. You may think your anonymous online username protects you, but trust me, it doesn't as much as many of you would think. Even those of you who use TOR, and then proceed to tell us where you live... along with every detail about your life.
2. Furthermore, any comments that are pointed out to us which are illegal, will be removed. We have a rule against illegal stuff so this shouldn't come as a surprise.
That said, I've got no interest in reading a 396 page thread and deciding what is or isn't illegal. I am not a lawyer. So all of you should be able to exercise a modicum of common sense and know that some things you say online may have consequences.
As I have said before and will say again, I am not your baby-sitter. As human beings, you need to take responsibility for your own actions. So, if you find yourself making a comment that might get you into trouble "in the real world", you really do need to think again before hitting the submit button.
This has been your mandatory FBI warning.
Client was attacked by a lunatic claiming he owned their game name. If they didn't protect themselves, could have been an issue.
GOOD LUCK TRACING METhat means we may be legally required to give a lawyer IP addresses and timestamps, along with your registered email address or other details about your account. You hold your flock to high standards DU. Compare to the tweet:
Client was attacked by a lunatic claiming he owned their game name. If they didn't protect themselves, could have been an issue.
It fails to mention that the lunatic had ran two crowd-funding campaigns and had released a product larger than many contemporary games under the very name. I find this statement of Ryan Morrison the most duplicitous of all on both sides of this debacle.
Don't be an idiot. DU is covering us as much as he can. I definitely don't envy him for having to deal with this bullshit. You just want to cover you ass with this. Pussy. After that monocled reply to the guy, this is disappointing.
Also fails to mention that being a lunatic and/or attacking someone wouldn't actually affect your legal ability to establish a brand name or register a trademark in any way. Pretty much all of Ryan Morrison's comments on the issue boil down to this summary: "If Cleve had been nice to us we might have stopped using his name, but since he's a dick, we're going to go ahead with the attempt to usurp it. Take that."You hold your flock to high standards DU. Compare to the tweet:

Why is the 'happily' from 'happily worked with Cleve' using a different font in Ryan's letter ?
Why do you take this thread seriously?Don't be an idiot. DU is covering us as much as he can. I definitely don't envy him for having to deal with this bullshit. You just want to cover you ass with this. Pussy. After that monocled reply to the guy, this is disappointing.

yeah, the sudden shift in tone is weird. "Cleve".

His claim seems to be that "donations" don't count and releasing a free(ish) demo doesn't count towards anything capable of being trademarked.
Someone should make this into a novel. This character material - a Neanderthal developer, working on a game for 20 years, an incompetent lawyer, trying to erase himself from history - that's pure gold.
They'd have to register and lurk 1 year / paySomethingAwful still has the better legal threats.
It's as if people don't even read GD.
Oh look another law bully hoping to shut the opposition with vague terms and bullshit threats.
