PC RPG Website of the Year, 2015 Codex 2016 - The Age of Grimoire Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
A friend bought this game for me and I'm really enjoying it coming in with no expectations. The pvp is definitely where the real game is. Musket skill Traps are stupidly powerful against unsuspecting players. I've spent way more time hunting other players down than actually doing the main story. Proximity chat really adds to the experience when you can hear your victims seethe and shit talk. I hope they never remove it. It's too based of a feature for a PVP mmo.

I'm 26 hours in. A more detailed writeup is coming soon. So far I recommend it to anyone who thinks an open world action rpg with moderately skill based dueling and ganking sounds fun. The shitty tedious parts are frontloaded and the lore and story are completely ignorable. Once you hit lv 25, you can do whatever you want.

Friend spent half an hour trying to find a name that wasn't taken. Appears they made the genius decision of making names unique globally across all servers.
How long has this game been out?

Here's some beginner pro tips on how to have fun in this game after the shitty tutorial part

0. JOIN A FACTION ASAP and always turn PvP on for the bonus to XP except for when you need to do a story quest because every faction has to use the same location so it's always a clusterfuck of people stabbing you in the back when you're trying to talk to the questgiver. PvP lets you experience the actual game where you actually have to pay attention to what is going on in the world to avoid being killed or take an opportunity to gank or help a fellow faction member gank another player.
1. Try to unlock weapon mastery skills for your two weapons of choice as soon as possible. The ones you select basically determine your entire moveset and how you play the game. You have unlimited and unrestricted respecs until lv 20 so you can play whatever build you want if you have the gear for it.
2. Grab iron ores when you see them. Grab red herbs for health potions. Blue herbs for mana. Young wood for arrows
3. Backstabs will crit. This is why fighting two people at the same time is inadvisable.
4. PvP will scale damage by level difference so new players wont instantly fucking die to one fireball.
5. Grind faction PvP quests to get faction gear as soon as possible. It is better than anything you can craft. Do not craft armor. Do not buy things on the market. Hoard your materials.

It's wild how few people flag in this game. The random PvP is fun and gives tons of experience. There's no real reason to be worried about dying because you can reset your spawn point continuously at your camp or other people's camps. You just have to avoid getting spawnkilled and then you're golden. Having a good time with greataxe plus either hatchet or hammer, full strength build.

I have a hard time understanding how exactly they are going to balance the multiple stat dependency weapons. Spear, rapier, and hatchet have good animations and abilities but it seems like (unless there's diminishing returns like a Dark Souls 40/40 build) they will always be inferior in output to single stat weapons. There's no way you could invest in constitution with a multiple stat weapon unless it all came from your gear. There are lots of weapon abilities (like berserk under hatchet) that scale self healing based on your constitution.

watched my friend play for a while when he was streaming, at least 90% of his server are the purple faction and he explained there's no downside to just joining the most dominant faction

Seems there is a handicap mechanic that gives advantages to joining the smaller factions.

https://www.newworld.com/en-us/news/articles/march-to-battle-factions

Your Faction choice impacts your play experience, positively and potentially even negatively. The 3 Factions that are in conflict over Aeternum are directly competing with one another for resources, power, and influence. This means that over time, one Faction might fall into a “last place” of sorts. To avoid that feeling like a total defeat, we’ve been careful about tuning the benefits of being in a Faction that controls the majority of the Territories, while paying extra attention to making the Factions that control fewer Territories feel like underdogs, not the losing side. No matter who is winning in the moment, we’ve built the system in a way that makes strong comebacks an exhilarating part of the game.

Purple will probably be the most popular anyway .

Re: pvp - you don't lose items or XP when dying so there's no real reason to not turn it on, unless you want to farm skins in peace or something.

quote from the devlog:

For dual-attribute weapons, the primary attribute (listed first below) scales at .9x compared to single-attribute weapons, and the secondary attribute scales at .65x compared to single-attribute weapons.

Attributes do have diminishing returns after 100+. 0.9x scaling is good enough to not care about the secondary stat.

1.65% damage per point invested from 5-100
1.3% per point from 101 - 150
1.17% per point from 151-200
0.91% per point from 250-300
0.78% per point over 300

There are also gems that majorly impact attribute scaling to convert 50% of your damage to int or focus making melee/magic and ranged/magic viable.

I play as the covenant for the sick Witchfinder General / Conquistador aesthetic. Being part of the smallest faction kind of sucks because the crafting stations in your town aren't as good but there's no shortage of pvpers to kill.

Ok you guys have convinced me. I'm going to have to buy this game so I can PK redditors. PvP sounds pretty pointless if you can't loot your kills though. How am I supposed to cause butthurt if there are no consequences for getting PK'd?

OK that makes a bit more sense. I knew about the int gems, but it seems like they should make them like Dark Souls 3 which had gems like that for every stat basically which reduced its scale rating while changing it to pure dex/str etc. scaling.

You get random drops from them sometimes, but you also get experience and rep -- more than for a monster typically. Your equipment does get damaged from pvp deaths, just not much. Really the larger consequence is being sent back to your spawn point. If you respawn too many times from your camp (which you can place almost anywhere), you have to respawn farther away.

Is this the ETHICAL Path of Exile microtransaction model of ONLY COSMETICS in a game where the aim is to make your guy look cool?

It was but they caved at the last minute. There are most definitely some 'time savers' mixed in now that I can see in addition to cosmetics. I'm torn on this because what is your time worth? If you are busy AF and have only an hour a night to play, a 3X experience booster (for instance) may seem like a solid investment. Kids have time, adults have money basically. Where it goes off the rail is when you artificially inhibit the progress of people who DON'T spend in the cash shop. Then its full Pay 2 Win and sucks.

You make a good argument.

Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is.
Isn't this game supposed to be based in a fantasy world?

I reckon nobody gives a shit. I watched a few stremms and YTs and nobody ever reads a single word of dialogues, quest briefs, journals or anything else. People just click everything away and run off where the quest compass points them to without having the foggiest about why they're doing what they're doing.

Wonder why they even bother writing out dialogue for nu-games when nobody reads it anyways. Just shit out a quest marker and call them retards.

Friend quit playing already btw, said it was boring. I didn't even get a chance to play this because of EasyRootkit preventing wine from playing it.

From what I watched it definitely didn't seem good. So few different types of enemies, main quest is just running all around the map for seemingly no reason, side-quests are extremely barebones.
Definitely going to shill for Project Gorgon though. If you didn't care about the PvP-aspect, it's a very similar style game except a lot better. Even does the weapon-as-a-class thing far better. If you can get past the grafx, it's a good game.

No, it's a magic island in the real world. One journal in the beach near the First Light area has the writer saying they found vestiges of vikings and roman ships, suggesting the place has been eating sailors for a long time.

(also provides a reason for the mishmash of equipment styles)

I saw him pick up a bunch of journal entries but mobs kept respawning anytime he tried to read them so he had no time to do so, looked like they had a 15 or 20 second respawn time
honestly fucking hate the "lol just read da found notes" design 99% of the time, laziest fucking design in the world. If you're going to do it at least have a voiceover so you can listen while playing the game.

Yeah, the respawn time usually gets me bitten in the ass when I'm inspecting loot too. I killed a boss boar and it respawned while I was looking around his little cave (I couldn't mine the silver ore vein yet but he would have interrupted me if I could). I keep seeing articles about how the respawn is still not fast enough in very populated servers which results in people skinning animals you killed, but that will probably calm down in a while. Apparently the respawn times are not universal either which suggests the devs are still tweaking them.

One quest in particular is soul-destroying. It's a faction quest that sends you to hunt sheep. All you're told is that there are sheep and you must kill them, which suggests that any old sheep will do. That is a lie. It's a specific kind of sheep, and naturally it's the rarer one. I reckon there are maybe two or three sheep spawning in the area, but it's hard to tell when they vanish so quickly. This is a very early quest, so it's also one a lot of people will be doing.

Didn't read spoilers for the MQ but I'm guessing the island is a magic barrier preventing the corruption from coming in from somewhere else and taking over the world.
