Forgive a picky question, but can anyone with game access tell me how many characters will fit in the biography field in chargen?

Don't seem to have any limit. Just remember to type in wikia if you plan to steal biography from game/movie/anime/politicians characters.

I've just finished the first two tutorial missions. After reading ton of threads (and reviews) about poor performance i was really concerned and i was ready to start with low settings. I have a medium rig, i5 with a 780 Gpu.

Actually i play on max settings, with only FXAA instead of MSAA, and game runs perfectly, super smooth. I'm so happy!! we'll see what will happen on later missions

Also, i lost the second mission 3 times before accomplish it, i'm not the best player but i finished EW on classic so i'm not superbad either. Seems challenging considering i'm still at start. (2nd difficulty)

Thanks for following up, enjoy your brofist storm :D

You can write bios for your X-Com soldiers? Are they all like, "Peter Smith is a top class marksman. His hobbies include panicking at the first site of mutons and hoping not to get liquidated by plasma fire." Just curious.
Are you honestly asking to read my fanfics? You have to ask three times in total before I believe you actually want to.

Performance is shit and completely unacceptable for a pc exclusive... Strategy game thats barely a graphical upgrade from the previous version.

Lazy, lazy programing.
It has about the same requirement as EW. Disable AA and you'd be fine, if you don't have too low RAM and...

BTW crack is out, and on my PC, I just don't have decrypted files. (Because I didn't even started to download them.)

So you think Legend Iron Man will be too hard for a veteran wanting a challenge? Legend in the preview videos just seems so easy.
I guess I can always turn it down or restart, if it becomes too tough.
That depends if you wanna to do cheese.

I'm more interested in interesting difficulty that doesn't require cheese. (I never used mimetic skin in previous versions, and avoided certain tactics.)

I can't wait to write 3000 word backstories for characters that get killed in the first combat round of the first mission by a sectoid.

There is still squad-sight which is free skill every sniper gets after first promotion from rookie and this game uses cheese to eleven. You have to cheese better than enemies who have their own nasty tricks.

There is no invisibility though, AFAIK.

Its not just that by any stretch of the imagination. Its all the modular parts that make it so heavy(if it is, didnt play yet). Every map is compiled anew every time, almost everything is destructible... a lot of things are going on.

That seems to be the problem. You could see the game stuttering in preview builds every time a turn ended and the game processed destructability on everything. It is impressive to see stuff crumbling all over the place, but probably not worth bad performance.

AA kills the performance. Otherwise it seems to run okay with everything on high, with all the bells and whistles. Phew. An optimization patch would be nice though. RNG jesus hates me already, so I guess it's an X-com game all right.

Jimmious, Mark Nauta was not lying to you, the geoscape issue was fixed for real :)

Also, little side note, i like that for us europeans the game use the h24 clock instead of h12 am\pm

Dungeon Crawl avoided this by rolling dice three times and averaging result. So if you had 1/5 chance of success in really difficult spell, it well negative consequences could be GLOW, falling into Abys, NEGATIVE mutation, high level demon appearing to kill, and of course rot. Also lets not forget amnesia and temporally INT loss.

Perhaps he would find a 1/(20)^3 chance of miss more acceptable.

Well to be fair in a lot of situations you just take any shot that is greater than 70% because if you don't the alternative is losing even harder. That doesn't mean the shots should hit, only that it is your best chance.

How's the odds on the Ranger's meleeing bros? Any reason to use it at all.

It's very powerful once you get the perks. The only real downside is it exposes you and triggers more pods, but that is ameliorated by their later perks (take no damage from next attack after killing, keep gaining free actions after every kill, etc). Shotgun is better until you get the second tier perk that increases damage of sword, until then it does low damage.

The rational for taking the shot makes sense. But just like in real life, shit happens and nothing is automatic. Every shot has a risk that you might miss. Which is why supporting fire, cover, and positioning is important.

Think about a commander in the field. He'll send out his soldiers to get into position knowing that some of them will get shot. It's a risk.

Finished the tutorial, restarting on commander/ironman now. I quite like what I've seen so far.

The only gripe is, indeed, performance. I can't whine too much as my PC is getting increasingly outdated but it's clear to see that there's huge optimisation issues. One, there's something off in the way the game reaches for voice files as I sometimes get noticeable delay between prompting a VA cue (by, say, browsing the voice customisation options) and the cue actually firing. It also seems like the voice files are causing some delays in missions themselves. Probably there's needlessly complex compression in place. Also, I have really bad FPS drops on the Avenger screen which seems like the game renders everything at high detail even when I'm zoomed out. Generally draw distance seems iffy and overeager to push the detail level on things that aren't exactly noticeable. This shouldn't be the case on medium settings.

Still, while not exactly the smoothest experience, the game is completely playable and I'm liking it. Knowing the dev cycle there's probably a patch incoming real soon that pushes optimisation a fair bit as they must be aware of the issues; I even heard some of the previewers talking about poor performance.

Bought it through Gram.pl - recommend it to fellow potatoes. Their Steam copy price is 169 PLN which is 10 euros cheaper than what Steam itself is asking.

Snipers are shit tier this time around thanks to accuracy debuff from squadsight.
Grenadiers are the new kings of the battlefield. !00% grenade accuracy with none of the muh weapon fragments loss.
At least based on my experience with the game right now.

Also
Never ever station your troops anywhere near cars during retaliation mission. Just don't. No matter what.
You will learn why quickly the moment you do so and the faceless come to play. Just lose one of my veterans to one. The damage is shit but it destroy everything around hence the advice.

I have to say I am really excited and am staying up to play this on release. I haven't been this excited for a game in a long time. This being a pc exclusive is just icing on the cake. Getting what I am assuming is a good game and feeling like I'm sticking it to console shitheads is ... delightful is the only word I can think of. It is delightful.

I also picked up the mods from Longwar Studios in the workshop, but it looks like the preorder content isn't downloaded yet for me for some reason.

I don't know what is going on but steam is now fucking with me. It said I could play in 30 seconds, went down to 7 seconds, then stopped downloading and shot up to 1 day. It is now ping ponging between 9 minutes and 2.5 hours. Damn you Steam! Just let me play.
