Uh, dudes, how long is long war exactly?

I finished the base game (both 1 and 2) in a bit less than 40 hours. That's already quite long.

For long war 1, there's an option called Dynamic War to make a long war game shorter than the usual length. But I've never tried it.

The game is not balanced around it.
You're supposed to tinker with other settings in order to use that option, but results are iffy even for experienced players, to my knowledge.

Though Long War as a whole isn't EXCEPTIONALLY balanced to begin with.
The LW Rebalanced modmod (in its latest iteration at least) is actually managing to provide a steady challenge for me now, so far at least (I'm playing at classic difficulty).
The first attempts with this modmod were utterly brutal.

I'd recommend it of course but I'm not sure about a first run. It deviates a lot from the original Long War, it's probably better to play straight LW first.

So LW Rebalanced is tougher than LW1 ?

I was thinking of playing Rebalanced hoping it would fix few things I didn't like about LW1:
1. Air combat is too irritating as they made it too random
2. Game is too long, I would only stand to try to play LW1 with that dynamic war option
3. Combat is too much based on moving square by square and setting overwatch traps for enemies.

You would probably feel that way initially.
It probably IS, too, but mostly you'll need to adapt to a different style.
You'll need engineers, penetrating weapons and other stuff when the time comes or you'll be done.
Chryssalids are truly freakin' terrifying, you will NOT be happy when they appear on screen.
Some changes you might not like (like berserkers being immune to Chem Grenades, for instance).
Tools, rules and classes are very different in several spots.

1. Air Combat is immensely better. Now that I'm getting the gist of it I'm finding myself having fun even with that one, occasionally.

2. I'm afraid game length will be more or less the same. But a lot of things have been rebalanced FOR a different, challenging late-game experience.

3. You definitely won't be moving square by square. The pods mechanics have been ENTIRELY reworked. Most of the time, they work nicely now, and "naturally".
(might be a TAD too brutal on terror missions). Also you can only steady your weapons when enemies are around, and this discourages that kind of behavior.
But mostly you'll have to face fatigue for missions that drag on too long. You do NOT want that, because that's more injury time. You'll want to clear the field fast.
Anyway, you can use MELD to partially heal a single soldier now, so that balances it a little.
A lot of changes go in the direction of more dynamic confrontations. The mod gives a lot to the Aliens but it isn't afraid to improve your tools as well when it's called for.

4. There are a lot of Ease of Use modifications, too. If anything, I might list THESE under the disadvantages, because it might mean I won't dare straight LW again.

Seriously, I know it's long, but try reading through the Mod description page.
It's very long and detailed, but you'll see how the mod tackles various issues that you surely have frustratingly experienced yourself, and you'll see how you like its approach.

No. Firaxis usually stay silent until they announce it close to the release, generally 3 months before.

Only things we know is that it will be on Unreal Engine 4 and that they are working on it since 2017.

Really annoying that the launcher defaults you to the base game the first time. Spent 40 minutes playing through the tutorial for the base game before I realised something was up. Any recommended mods? I have "Stop wasting my time" already, want nothing too invasive

I really like the silenced weapons mod, which makes silent weapons silent, so if you kill your target from stealth you don't get revealed.

From what I remember the others in the pod don't do anything. Think there is some small chance of reveal, like they notice tracers or something like that. Can't fully remember, but was a great mod. There is one for Long war 2 as well.

My thoughts so far (few hours in). The aliens like to point at stuff and I'm taking a lot more casualties than I ever did in nuXCOM 1. Hard to say whether this campaign is in a death spiral yet but it might be. Despite the incredible number of wounds and my consequent failure so far to gather an "A team" I've been pretty successful on missons.

Wow, so much cool stuff for Xcom 2. Gonna definitely pick WoTC during the next sale.

I've sunk over 300 hours in xcom 2 (it's honestly in my top 10, maybe even top 5 best games of all time, a possibly heretical admission for this forum) and still ain't tried long war 2.

I got so many mods installed (270 in my last run) it feels like LW2 would be a downgrade even though everyone gushes about it.

Depends on what those mods do. Lw2 also requires many UI mods, lw2 changes are gameplay and mechanics.

Yeah I suppose as a cohesive experience LW2 must be unmatched, perhaps I should force myself to give it a go even if it won't be 100% to my tastes (to give an example of how I customized the game to my liking: I prefer variety at the expense of balance, so in my game I NEVER see the same class twice, between having tons of class mods and class randomizers no dude or dudette I get will ever have the same skill tree as another so each is more snowflake then the last). Will consider it next run.

But it is still beta and it is not 100% complete, bug free or balanced.
