I totally agree. KQ5 was my first KQ game, and while it's not my favorite, I really enjoy it a lot. KQ6 is the pinnacle of the series and anyone who says it sucks is trying to be edgy. And once again, I agree that KQ7 was straight up trash. I didn't complete it, but it felt like it was trying to be a Disney game for girls.
I can also say that I have never played or even considered playing KQ2-4. I have absolutely no patience anymore for the patented Sierra "frequent and 100% guaranteed on your first play-through dead end scenarios" they loved so much back then.
And I refuse to call KQ8 a KQ game. At least that way it has some small amount of enjoyment in it.

Yeah there's plus and minuses, u tend to forgive a lot of old adventures, but nowadays i simply just don't have the time to replay the whole thing just to click on a pixel 5 hours ago.

I am pretty sure the remakes of 2 and 3 do not have the dead-ends, just the deaths, but I could be mistaken. I need to get around to playing those. The intro for 3 is amazing.
Anyway, not surprise news that Telltale fell in love with Walking Dead money and passed on this.
Heh - it's funny. I'd known about this deal for almost a year now, and I tried telling people not to expect it from Telltale, and the amount of hate I got for it was AMAZING! So much so that even one dude followed me over here to ask me for proof. (It was in private conversations with friends of mine in the business that I knew this, and I didn't want to discuss that.) Yet it turns out, I was the only one being straight with all those sycophants for a year. (With them yelling at me, accusing me of spreading lies and rumors about Tellltale.)
I drank a nice glass of Scotch in my honor last night. Heh.

Yeah, I read some of the discussions on the TTG forums about that. Lots of sound and fury. At least you won't have to give out free copies of your game now.
I'm glad Telltale isn't doing it though -- they never made the sort of adventure game that King's Quest has to be, and now they're not even making adventure games period. Bullet dodged.

Heh, yeah, it was over at TTG. Hah - yeah, I knew I'd never have to give out free copies of my game. But honestly, if any of those dudes are really hard up for cash, and they want to play a fun and entertaining game, I'd give them a copy. They'd have to promise to buy another one of ours in the future though, the freeloadin' bastids!!!
Yeah, due to the nature of Sierra being a public company - Ken had to answer to shareholders, and they wanted to go with CUC... it was kind of a shitty situation for games - but the shareholders were happy.. for the moment.

Wlel, like I said, my first KQ game was KQ5, and that was back when it came out. KQ6 has similar dead ends which I got caught up in, too. I just don't have the patience for that kind of gameplay anymore. That was literally Sierra/Infocom's way of extending game length; making you have to restart after 5 hours because you accidentally picked up a sandwich in one of the Larry games (if I recall). Just awful design.
Yeah, I know KQ5 is awful in that regard. The only real example I can think of in KQ6 is going into the labyrinth without the necessary items, but the guards give you a subtle clue if you don't have everything. They don't outright say "don't come in here" though. You might not pick up on what they mean at first.
I've never gotten the best ending but I think you can screw that up by doing things improperly too. There must be a few other dead ends in KQ6 but I'm not too inclined to look it up.
KQ7 is the only KQ without dead ends, I think. I don't count KQ8 at all.
KQ6 has very few dead ends, and most of them involve missing items in a single area immediately preceding the finale of the 'good ending', so you wouldn't have to go back very far.
KQ5's dead ends are occasionally sadistic, but the whole game only takes 2-3 hours to beat if you know what you're doing anyway, so going back isn't that big a deal.

Well I know I once fucked myself up by not giving my betrothed the knife when I could have, keeping it to myself because I thought I could use it.
Turns out that if you don't give it to her, you're screwed cause she won't be able to save you during the duel you will inevitably lose.

Hey man, I appreciate being called a sycophant by you repeatedly -- I'm not even one of the main people that gave you hell about your "inside information," and haven't "gotten into it" with you previously. And while I don't really see what I've done to be called a sycophant (on every forum you can manage it), your above "drink me a scotch to celebrate" post is the definition of the word.
For the last few months there was a genuine effort to cull real from unverifiable information about TT's King's Quest - your "trust me" statements, without even so much as saying simply what you did above "(It was in private conversations with friends of mine in the business that I knew this, and I didn't want to discuss that)" certainly didn't help.
I love what you're doing with QfI... but I don't understand why you think you can't throw around statements, without any verification, AND have a massive attitude about it when people don't just believe you. This is the internet, man!
Ah, my Banning at Telltale - Yeah - we had a conversation once where someone talked about people not being able to get old games. I said "There are ways" but I posted no links, nor even used the words abandonware. A very thick-skulled mod there named Jennifer banned me because talking about abandonware is "verboten". I wasn't advocating it, but you'd have to be a fool not to acknowledge is presence. Which is fine; their forums, their rules. But I thought I would at least get the courtesy of being contacted. I got no warning or anything - which I would have gladly acquiesced to - I'm a game designer and publisher, of course abandonware and software piracy is something that is in my wheelhouse of concern. I tried to contact her about it, but her only response was "Goodbye means goodbye." Someone on a powertrip. Whatever - no big loss, really. I haven't played many Telltale games as of late.
jfrisby - you're right - you weren't one of the main rude sycophants over there at all. Sorry if I made it sound like that - I'm referring to others. The funny thing is, I was the only one being straight with them for almost a year. Telltale said nothing - and I had nothing to gain by telling them the truth, as I knew it. I was only another fan who didn't want other good-hearted fans putting all their eggs in a basket that didn't exist. I'm sorry I couldn't offer any "proof" at the time, as I said - the information was given to me in private emails and conversations, and I couldn't post that.
In the end, I'm just an adventure game fan who wants the best for all the adventure game fans out there. I've been nothing but honest about things, and I've always invited people to contact me privately if they need to discuss things further. I'm very accessible, and I like being that way. I feel that interaction with people who might play my games can only make them better.
