I think I might pick this up at the next discount. Just hoping it's not annoyingly woke.
Don't bother, it's trash, more so if you like 40K.
I saw reviews saying it's very easy even on Unfair, especially after the first half of the XP progression. I decided to take an extended tryout, let's see how it's like.

It's better than Underrail at least.
:nocountryforshitposters:
That was the most limp dick troll attempt I've seen recently.
I actually mean it, since the codex hails it as the second coming of Christ, which is what aggravates me the most.

I love the art and lore writing in this game, but just about everything else sucks ass.

Combat system is boring as fuck with way to abilities that rely on stacks of abstract bullshit or endlessly buffing yourself and allies. It's so tedious and makes every combat encounter the same as it incentivizes optimal ability sequence over more immersive aspects like positioning or having a wide variety of different kinds of attacks.

Also I've never been so unexcited to level up in a RPG before. You level up way to often, UI is dogshit and the abilities are so poorly written that it takes you out of the game trying to figure out what they do.

Got bored of this one way before I finished - 6/10 (the setting did it a lot of favours)

Meh, it's a videogame. It can never reach the quality of the experience you'd get with a Game Master who is tailoring the difficulty, the plot and the rewards in real time to give you the best rpg-edging intellectual handjob of your young life :)

But among videogames, there are lazy ones and well-crafted ones, and Underrail is one of the best in the field. The design eschews (fuck this word btw) non-linearity to a large extent in the name of providing a measured level of challenge, instead of boasting about shallow and trivial but "open" world. Not falling into the trap of shooting for unachievable freedom is Wise Videogame Design Decision #1.

From that decison follows another - when you can solve the difficulty curve part of the equation, you have a hope of eventually balancing the combat system. And Underrail has indeed balanced its combat system through the years of development and patching. How many RPGs can we say that of? The enemy and encounter design some of the most imaginative I can think of in RPGs and this comes from the designers who know their engine and their systems very very well. That's a rare thing in RPGs made by above-indie-sized teams. And makes the "game" part of the game a treat.

The setting and atmosphere and whether they grab you is very subjective. I came to suppress my disbelief and questioning the lore. The ambient music and the gun sounds get me immersed more than the superficial writing style. The game tells you its story by making you walk through the areas, not by dumping text on you. Nobody has been trying to pass as a great writer.

But if you know RPGs better tnan Underrail in those aspects, by all means list them.

It felt like too puffed up stylistically, but it was the first that came to mind and I was typing in a hurry

Talking about Underrail in every thread should be a fucking criminal offence on the ‘dex. I’m so getting tired of this shit.

Well, Underrail fans are tired of other games, with up to 1000x the budget of Underrail, not being as good as Underrail
you mean, Underrail fans are butthurt people ignore their autistic little Fallout-wannabe
Underrail is gold standard for exploration focused, challenging combat heavy, open world rpg.
It is better at those things than Fallout

I'm near the end of Act 4 and if I wasn't committed to my Iconclaust playthrough I would have thrown Yrliet out of the fucking airlock and masscared all her kins for stupid shit they pulled on Act 4.

I made the mistake of playing iconclaust my first run as well. Never again now I know the only good way to deal with a eldar is to just shoot them. You have to do some serious mental gymnastics to justify keeping Yirlet in your party post chapter 3 I also wanted to kill her.

1. Shoot all xenos on sight.
2. Shoot all heretics on sight.
3. People you don't know need a good reason not to get shot on sight.

Come on, it's 40k and you're basically a pirate king.

Finally pushing past Act 1 after having this game for almost a full year. I just re-rolled and got myself a psyker this time. Wish me luck.

It's not in many games that you get to roleplay an archetype of a fanatical politcomissar who shouts curses at his subordinates as he sends them to their deaths. I just wish the intro wasn't 4 hours long, but anyway, I got to the open part, or is it more like the fortress tutorial part of the intro.

What stupid shit? Calling reinforcements? I think you can tell them to not call it. In my dogmatic run when I already killed them all on Janus and kept killing them reinforcement did come after the ending.
