Going back on the subject of Quake source ports, I tried DirectQ today and I might finally leave WinQuake for it. It is optimised to run very well on computers running DirectX, including old laptops that may have trouble with OpenGL, and preserve the look and feel of the software mode—that includes waterwarp—while providing some of the advantages of the accelerated mode, and most of these extra effects can be disabled if you want it to look closer to the original. I only spotted a bug with a shadow in E1M1 and I do not know if it is the only occurence.

The drawback is that the author seem to have abandonned it. And not just abandon it but also delete his blog, his codeplex page, etc. Thankfully most of that stuff appears to have been archived, but it'd be nice if somebody else could take over since the source code is available and it is a rather nice project. The latest version is 1.9.0, and though it's a couple of years old now, it's apparently pretty mature. I saw a 1.9.2 version floating around but the author is a russian guy who decided to remove features and would like to make some enhanced features the default instead of preserving the original look.

Yup, that's it. I tried some other ports with hardware acceleration and they all seem to have that. I've been using WinQuake for so long that I never knew it happened.

A vast majority of ports show Z-Fighting, that's just the way it is. Quakespasm doesn't though, and I believe the software-ish qbism doesn't as well.

Apparently it's due to the maps not being designed properly, but that stuff would only show in hardware, so with Quake being primarily developped with software it didn't show during testing. Apparently Quakespasm has an option to try to fix it.

I just wonder if I should stick with WinQuake or just stick with DirectQ. Aside from this issue it is rather neat, though it apparently has an annoying where you might just be sucked into the floor, which is best countered by saving often.

ShamHawke's Lazy Quake 2 Patcher (3.24 Unofficial Patch)

Quick and easy HD patch for Quake 2 and its expansion packs, this just enables widescreen resolutions, fixes bugs and adds the music files to the rip that is being sold on Steam

Although most people suggest using source ports for certain things, I tend to like the way Vanilla Quake 2 looks instead, but yet I still wanted widescreen support and music without the CD.

Well this is something for those people who want it!
I do not care nor will bother with comments with things like yeah well sourceport x is way better or why not take advantage of sourceport y's features such as custom menus n' blah

All this little Self extracting Archive will do is extract the necessary things to enable these features in a very minimal way to keep things as Vanilla as possible

Update Quake 2 to Knightmare's Unofficial v3.24 Quake 2 (THIS IS NOT KMQUAKE2)
Set Default Resolution to 1280x720 (720p)
Allow other Widescreen modes
Setup no-CD music

This will also regardless if you have them or not, install everything needed for the mission packs for Quake 2 as well.

Here is the link for this tool

http://www.mediafire.com/download/grjaxayjay267p7/ShamHawke's_Lazy_Quake_2_Patcher.exe

Just set the install path to the Quake 2 folder in your Steamapps/common folder. It should be set to install INSIDE Quake 2 folder, it will not make its own Quake 2 folder!

If your Quake 2 or mission pack launches but does not show up on screen but you can see the taskbar button and hear the music, force close it, go to the specific game (whether it be baseq2, xatrix or rouge folders) and delete the config.cfg file. Then relaunch the game, it should work. "

edit: Quake 2 and Ground Zero work great but I had problems launching The Reckoning.

I fixed this by:

deleting the config file from xatrix
copy/ pasting the config file from Q2's baseq folder to the xatrix folder
the expansion pack will now load but if you try to start a game it will get stuck on loading so exit the game again
delete the config file from xatrix again
now the game will launch (and create its own proper cfg file) and work normally.

Content of working quake2/xatrix/config.cfg file

// This file is generated by Quake2, do not modify.
// Use autoexec.cfg for adding custom settings.

This installer will allow you to install and play Outlaws on a modern OS (I'm running W7x64). It automagically patches the game to the latest version, it also works with your backup images.

Use the installer in combination with nGlide to run the game in glide mode. After installing run OLCFG.exe to select the glide renderer then simply choose your desired resolution in nGlide's options menu, make sure you don't stretch the image.

If you want sexy non-smoothed visuals just select Glide but remove both smoothing filters in the advanced settings tab.

At this point the actual game should run great but the menus and movies might be infected with dreaded rainbow colours from hell, this happens because Outlaws uses DirectDraw for movies and menus. You can fix this by installing DXGL, just download and run the Windows installer. The settings below work fine for me. OLWIN.exe is the file you should add.

Not exactly a patch, but since I decided to reinstall and play this classic and test how it works on a modern system, someone else might find this useful. Here are my observations for:

Grand Theft Auto

It works fairly well on Win7 x64 without any special fix or compatibility setting, which surprised me. The menus and credits display too fast as there doesn't seem to be any frame limiter—the London 1969 add-on doesn't have that problem—but other than that the game runs fine.

Rockstar released the game for free, supposefuly with fixes for modern systems (which meant Windows XP back then) but ironically that version adds a few problems that the original release doesn't have, and audio tracks are mixed-up due to numbering error. While it was a nice freebie for the fans, it was a rather sloppy one. Rocktar has since removed it from its website, but it is obviously possible to find it floating around on the Net, though you are strongly recommended to get a copy of the original CD release and use that. It is also impossible to use the London 1969 add-on with the Rockstar ex-free release.

London 1969 installs and works just as fine as GTA on Win7 x64, and the menu speed appears to be fixed.

Not well-known, London 1961 is a free add-on to London 1969, still available from Rockstar. The installer is a 16-bit file that won't run in a 64-bit system but there is an easy workaround:

Create a new folder; we'll call it "London1961" for clarity's sake. Copy the file "GTALondon.exe" from the root of your London 1969 CD to "London1961". Then create a new folder called "setup" in "London1961". In the "setup" folder, extract the content of the file "Gtal1961.exe" (7zip should do the trick) that you downloaded. Then simply execute "GTALondon.exe" in "London1961" and click "Install". That should get the London 1961 add-on to install.

Although it worked fairly well for me, some people reported that they prefer to run the game in DOSBox. It should be noted that this also allows you to use the 3DFX mode with a glide wrapper, like nGlide, provided you use a version of DOSBox that supports Glide. It runs fairly fast but I'm not fond of the filtering effect it uses.

Update: I noticed a couple of small issues. The first is that the CD tracks do not loop once they are finished, but you can easily remedy that by pressing F5 to change radio stations, or change cars. The second is more annoying: after some time, the audio tracks will start to skip so they alternate between 1 second of music and 1 second of silence. It is very annoying and the only way I found to stop it when it happened was to quite the mission and go back to the menu, but that means forfeiting the current progress in the level. That said, I did find that killing explorer.exe before playing the game allows you to avoid that problem, or at least I have been able to play for hours straight without it showing up.

Does that installer include anything special? If it only copies files, I find it a bit unnecessary since the original installers worked fine—with the exception of London 1961 but that one can easily be worked around.

Which version have you tried? The original CD release or the Rockstar Classics release?

As for the speed, it runs pretty much the way I remember running back in the day, and I think I read that 23/24 fps is the normal speed. GTA2 ups that to 30 fps, which makes it run smoother.

Else as last resort you can always use DOSBox as it should give the best compatibility; GTA was developped for it in the first place and that's how the demo ran, with native Win95 support added only for release. I got some minor graphic glitches in the title menu, but I can still use it properly and experienced no glitch in the game itself so far, so I'll just keep using the native Windows version for now.

It comes with all the necessary GTA files, no need to download images, patches, cracks,... just run the installer and play. It also fixes the rainbow color bug (easy to fix I know) and it comes with GTAFixer which fixes the music problem you mentioned.

I always disliked the frame rate limiter but I could just disable it on my old Pentium 200 and the game would run as smooth as shit from a duck's ass. On an i7 the game just goes mental when you try this :)

Thanks for London 1961 info and link BTW, I never played that add-on but I loved London 1969.

I only noticed the rainbow colours bug in the little logo cinematic that comes at launch, and nowhere else in the game. Easy to fix in any case, as you said.

Anyway, from what you wrote it appears that this is based on the Rockstar Classics release, with fixes from this page. If so, I'll stick with the original CD release since it installs and works fine, and it is also compatible with London 1969 and 1961. No need to fiddle with cracks since the game had no other protection than a simple CD check—you need it in the drive for the music anyway—and mounting an image doesn't bother me. But if this works for you, then good.

The only solution I see for your speed problem is to slow down your CPU with some program and then play the game with the frame limiter off. Probably not ideal. My guess is that you'd have an easier time experimenting with the DOS version in DOSBox and play with the cycles. Check the 3DFX version to see if it looks and feels better for you; some claims it runs very smooth for them.

Edit: a shame with London 1961 is that it takes place once more in London, despite the add-on featuring Manchester as a multiplayer map. Still, if you like GTA, more of the same is hardly a bad thing.

Ban/brolapse gondor for adding more newshit to his initial post. No way I'm adding Skyrim or DA:O shiat into my pure, aryan OP.

A lot of the stuff in that list are also mods that merely change the balance—for better or worse is debatable on an individual basis—without fixing anything that needs to be fixed.

Yea, there are some corner-cases, as always in life. I selected the patches above when they tried at least to be fixes or at least faithful to developer-intent community continuations of support-wise dead games, not mods. For instance, the Empire Earth II / Empire Earth II: The Art of Supremacy - Unofficial patch 1.5 fixes a ton of compatibility problems and bugs but also expands the game, while trying to stay faithful to the original vision (so by intention, not a mod). In this case there is a even more puristic version available, just the resolution fixes. Similar, the Age of Wonders shadow magic patch, which tries to fix the balance of the game, but I agree, balancing is a dangerous terrain. But I think the majority is on a acceptable balance of doing significant less harm to a game than good. But I'm not the Tessera kind of ultra purist, but believe in the possibility of truthful community continuations (Killap's or Wesp5' works come to mind).
