Say what you want about Metal Gear Solid series and its goofball writing, but the first game is a genuine classic and the series does have good music:

Enclosure, MGS1

I haven't actually played Portable Ops, but the credits song Calling To The Night is fantastic:

I haven't played Portable Ops 2 either, but Heavens Divide is also great:

I'm an MGS fag from start to finish, so :yeah:

Me too, but I guess we both agree that after MGS1 it's very much a product aimed for the fans? I mean, MGS4 was basically made from start to finish exclusively for long-time fans.

And besides, you need to be a fan to appreciate the style and ridiculous writing of the series.

Skyrim .///.
Shin Megami Tensei's Ginza is simply awesome. Sword of Justice's arrangement from Chaos & Order is also pretty cool, though it loses a bit of the synth like charm of the original.

Then, while being more of a pretty ecclectic genre mix of several genres and gameplay styles than an actual role playing game, or even an action role playing game, Folklore, aka Folksoul if you are japanese, has some very pretty and atmospheric music, with The Judge and the Judged and The Fairy Waltz being some of the best.

Back to pure role playing games, Strange Journey's OST is quite unique and stylish, and totally awesome while being so, with Eternal Throne, Take the shield, raise the spear, and The Fear of God being some of my personal favorites.

And while I do not like most of either part of Persona II's sountracks, Holy Spear Knights from Hitlersona is very awesome.

Japanese games have better music than western games, that's fact. :obviously:

now now now they can all be equally formulaic and shit let's try and contain our enthusiasm here before someone gets offended

Jasper Kyd I am already liking more than Jeremy Soule at the moment because of how he creates mood pieces that effortless blend in with the rest of the audio, also after assassin's creed 2 I would prefer he start doing fantasy games if the fuckers would let him stay low key

Yuzo Koshiro is the master of level themes for action games I don't care what you say

Jack Wall did well with Jade Empire, particularly the battle themes and coincidentally he went on to compose for some Mass Effect series thing

Castlevania Symphony of the Night osts but only if it's a cover or remix

Some people also like Dark Reign 2's ost I guess

And Actually Jagged Alliance 2 has a very functional ost. I wouldn't call it great but the laptop and management screen track is very endearing

Let's have some tracks that don't come up in every single revision of this thread:

Death or Glory

Was there some mission disk for this? I can find some comments for Death or Glory: Der dunkle Kaiser on the web, however I do not remember this being released back then.
You had to order it directly from the publisher for like 20 Reichsmark. Proto DLC.

Uploaded another track from the game btw:

Someone mentioned Ninth Heaven from the Grim Fandango soundtrack. Good choice, but my favourite is Temple Gate. The most solemn, sad and sombering piece in the game.

So beautiful...

Breath of Fire V contains Sakimoto's greatest work. It made the fights really, REALLY intense. I haven't seen any other game's music top it as far as this (combat intensity) goes :

There are more I can't just which are just as good.

The fact that the graphics were at 60 FPS added a lot too, when you knew the enemy was just about to get his turn and deliver a devastating attack and usually scream whilte doing it.

Magical Starsign (not the best jrpg ever, but it was made by the same guys from Mother 3, so you can expect a very weird and inane game)

Eyes on me. piano

Ahhh, my teacher had me play that song on a piano recital. It's a nice song, though I wish I had played "Find your way" from the OST piano album, which I prefer...

I can't really pick out any individual tracks, but the finest RPG soundtracks I've heard are:

Morrowind
Gothic 3
Jade Empire
Mass Effect/Mass Effect 2
Risen
The Witcher
Fallout: New Vegas (return of original Fallout composer = win, it made me never want to turn on the radio since the ambient music was so good)
World of Warcraft ( in my experience, people who diss this game haven't played it. I know this isn't a traditional RPG, but it has more RPG elements than not).

I'm sure there are others I can't remember.
