Full analsys, very well done, fairly interesting to watch, far more interesting than the game itself. Very informative about what NOT to do in storytelling.

This one is absolutely spot on about the cringe writing tho, which for me is the biggest problem with the game.

I forgot how ugly this game is. They clearly wanted it to look like Borderlands then gave up after making the environments and tried to make the NPCs look realistic but instead they look uncanny and repulsive.

It's annoying how TOW's writers and Fallout's and their fans think that showing off corrupt corporations is an epic dunk on capitalism when capitalism and corporate economics aren't always mutually inclusive. In a way powerful corporations dictating labor from the top down is a different system and is in some senses itself anticapitalistic.

Instead of a nuanced view though they look at a boss being mean or Vault Tec being shady and use that as proof why capitalism never works and is completely evil. The fans miss the point and the writers miss it even more.

It's just the evolution of Boyarsky's style. Some unsung female artist tried to explain how wrong and un-Fallout it was, but he refused to listen.

To reddit Fallout's known as the definitive anti-capitalist game. They're wrong but that's its reputation and at this point it's what the writers say too.

Alot of TOW's fanfare came from the same people who praised it for, in their eyes, going back to Fallout's roots, that aren't actually, and pushing a capitalism bad message.

And even that would have been fine (put aside Epic / Microsoft / Walmart for a second), but you can't even get into TOW on that front since it's also desperately trying to be funny. A critique of capitalism, or more accurately corporate overreach as Roguey pointed out, albeit from a aging gen x'er and rainbow-haired dyke millennial perspective, that took their perceived issues at least somewhat seriously would have gone down far smoother. There's a place for Das Kapital and a place for Dan Harmon sitcoms, but never together.

I'd wish that rating meant something, but almost any functional AAA game gets 80+. Steam rating system is getting close to Metacritic, where even trash games are getting 6-8 out of 10.
Metacritic is an average of scores, Steam is a simple up/down vote. No surprise that slop that's meant to be popular is popular with the masses.

To re-state the obv: TOW is mediocre/shit(even for mainstream) and people elevated it to the level of such games for a limited time only because they hated Bethesda/F76 at the time.

Just taking a peek at concurrent player data for such games & TOW says it all.

You can also look at Steam achievement data to get an idea of its attrition rate. A quarter of players give up on the game before even finishing Edgewater.

By February 2020, the game had sold over two million units. By May 2021, the game had sold over three million units. By August 2021, the game had sold over four million units.

It's now at five. I'm sure a lot of publishers wish their terrible games could have such a great long tail.

They got lucky with the reason stated, everyone and their grandmother jumped on the bandwagon; game had a good rep from the get go and no one have a good reason/cares enough to even shit on it, result is people still buying and not playing evidently. 5 mil sold and under 450 concurrent players on steam, even outer wilds, that game people confused with this gaym has 5x+ of that lmao

Seems likely it's more popular on console than PC.
