Heh, the one time I tried I thought it was cool to play a tourist. All I got out of it was pictures of monsters just before they ate my character... Of course they all looked like ASCII characters. Stupid game :)

1. Ultima VII
1. Fallout
3. Planescape: Torment
5. SSI Pools of Radiance
8. Deus Ex
4. Nethack
6. Diablo

Not ranked since unplayed: Final Fantasy VII

but really this is too easy. Spice it up by throwing Daggerfall, Morrowind, Gothic, Baldurs Gate, and Spellforce in there to get some controversy...

I saw a guide on how to play a Tourist sucessfully, it isn't easy, but it's kinda interesting, heh.

You can blind Beholders and prevent them from doing eye-beams with your camera and you can use the credit card to pick locks.

Problem is, you don't so much play Nethack as you get played. I always get my ass handed to me...

Dungeon crawlers are action games with character improvement (and can be quite fun). I understand that "common usage" considers them something like RPG-lite, but I think that's a travesty.

If I were to take that view then few of the combat-centric games* that I played as a nipper were actually RPGs.

I'm not about to change my classification, therefore will agree to disagree.

[*e.g. Bard's Tale]

Edit:
BTW. What is wrong with the term "rpg-lite"? Why is that a "travesty" if it is an accurate term? Are you some sort of sad elitist?

What's wrong with it is that nowadays almost all games have some sort of "RPG" characteristics. If one is allowed to define anything that has any aspect of any genre as belonging to that genre, then the act of stating what genre a game is in becomes pointless. For example, almost all games could be called action games. But it would be nice to be able to differentiate Morrowind from Doom3, so let's not say that just because MW has some form of "action", that it's an Action Game.

Simliarly, because some game has character progression, or in other instances because it has choices with consequences, then let's not call those games "RPGs".

To put it another way, if Diablo is an RPG, then just about every game on the market (including many sports games) could be called RPGs. You have to draw the line somewhere, and I think that line should be drawn by choosing what the game's PRIMARY FOCUS is. There'll never be a universally accepted definition of a CRPG, despite what Sarvis may think. Definitions change all the time (that's why Bard's Tale was an RPG back then, but might only be marginally an RPG now, and also why I put the GoldBox game at the bottom of the RPG ladder).

Is Diablo PRIMARILY about playing a role? Or is it PRIMARILY about beating shit up in real time (a.k.a. action)? I think it's obvious, and I think it's a travesty that some call it an RPG because then you get things like H&S reviews where dumbfuck reviewers think "it said it was an RPG, but it's not at all like Diablo. This game sucks!" (not exactly their error, but I'm trying to illustrate a point) -- In other words, people don't know what to expect anymore when a game is given a label that has all meanings.

Nethack is incredibly deep, I cant believe some of you people.

You can do all sorts of shit in that game.

The coolest example is probably the Cockatrice example. They turn things to stone, so you can kill one, put on gloves, grab the dead body and hit people with the body and stone creatures, and if you fall down the stairs, you can fall on what you're holding and that means stone yourself.

You canget stoned in that game? Cool man!

Sorry, couldn't resist. But still, it's just room after room after room of monsters and treasure. I see no point in it...

Nethack and ADOM are one of the most complex and thrilling games I've ever played. ADOM certainly is the game of my life when it comes to the number of hours I've spent on a game.
Hard, but sooo rewarding.

Just bored with Nethack at the moment. Bored of ToEE too after overdoing it for a few days. Think I must be depressed or something. I even opened Dung Lords. Happily, I cheered up enough then to avoid throwing myself into a suicidal state and went to troll dreamcaster's forums instead. Life is better now.

Still bored with Nethack though.
