Hopefully it has a fucking proper bestiary this time. This is my only starting thought. I have PURGED the negative thoughts.

It came earlier than I expected, I played Kuro 1 with fan translation and it was very solid, also very refreshing game after being stuck with Rean for so long. It's a shame that now I'm at the mercy of these NIS losers who translated it not for fans, but for some stupid agenda, but I hope it's playable... gonna pirate it with all the DLCs

I bought the game on Steam, and then I was going to grab the costume DLC to put Quatre in a more respectable sport coat than his default outfit, but then I read that it cost $60! You can buy a real sport coat for less than that! So I checked the pirate website to see the DLC was there, but it's for the GOG version of the game. :(

The game has yet another boring Trails start where you wander around talking to lots and lots of NPCs, and there is lots and lots of talking dialogue scenes, and we haven't gotten to any gameplay or exciting story stuff yet. Conceptually, I like that they are adding new city districts, but these modern urban cities are simply boring.

Conceptually I like the idea of the protagonist getting heat, though in this case it's not for any of Van's actual choices. We'll see if it actually goes anywhere. Rean should have gotten a lot of heat for his choices. Disliked by Erebonians who oppose Osborne and his dogs, disliked by the people of the two countries he conquered, Calvardians would have loved to spy on him and try to assassinate their enemy's most prolific mech pilot, and should have gotten on the shitlist for Bracers/people in the martial arts community/friends of Cassius and Arios for being a ELOB student who "serves the wrong side". But he got nothing done to him.

So instead of REMOVING the stupid realtime fight system, they've added features to it now? Seriously? I've fucking had it with this shit. I stayed quiet for Daybreak 1 because I was hoping it was a fluke, not gonna happen now.

It's DOGSHIT. I want TURN.BASED.COMBAT.ONLY.

So it's Ys, but in Trails. We're merging a pathetic failure of an oversimplified combat system (Ys X) into Trails and we're just doing it for the sake of it?

WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?

Ys: Realtime
Trails: Turn-Based

Real simple fucking formula. ZERO reasons to mess with it.

It might have been a continuation of trends that began in earlier Trails games, where you could destroy monsters on the field without entering into a battle. And then when they started making both action and turn based games using the same engine, like Trails of Cold Steel and Tokyo Xanadu, someone at Falcom probably thought it would have been a simple matter to port over some code and animations from their action games to raise up that trash fight idea.

I think the fact that these "we gotta let the player skip the trash by destroying them on the field" or "we gotta make destroying trash on the field more interesting" is an admission that the devs don't think that lots and lots of turn based battles against trash is very fun, ie an admission that they aren't doing their jobs and making an engaging combat system/fun fights. Early trash fights in the Cold Steel games on Nightmare difficulty were engaging, but here in Kuro 2 I am eviscerating trash in turn based and it's a snooze. I don't understand why they are unwilling to make them challenging even on the hardest difficulty. Why even provide higher difficulties if they aren't going to do that?

Daybreak II has released a little too close on the tail of me finishing the first one, so I'm going to be holding off on it a bit. I've heard that they fixed the lack of difficulty in first one with this installment, but I'm pretty skeptical on that front. Honestly, if you take all of the challenge out of the combat, that's taking half the reason I still play these games away from me, and I'm not sure if I can devote the immense amount of hours to the series anymore if you remove half of my enjoyment from them.

Again, I think the Daybreak combat could be phenomenal if tuned properly on the highest difficulty. It was a fucking snooze in Daybreak 1 though. All the systems and mechanics are there, they just need to get the difficulty to the right place.

It is neat how they were able to reuse preexisting assets and doodads to create this neat little outdoor market area.

It is irksome how yet again, my character levels and inventory resets. Come on, this is what? The 12th Trails game? Other RPG series like The Banner Saga figured out to carry over everything as soon as the first sequel. How hasn't Falcom figured out how to do this by now?

That is a cool looking monster. I like the aesthetics of Falcom monsters. It's a shame that you never get to interact with them outside of being trash mobs, ie never see them being tamed by beastmasters or exhibited/sold in town as pets.

The game is better optimized than Kuro 1 was. I have had no stuttering during S-crafts this time.

Ah, if only Falcom had the guts to do this and make it stick.

100% agree with this.

Reverie combat was peak.

I don't know what's the point of action combat mode in Daybreak 1. On Nightmare it's not really faster than TB. And you even get less sepith. So what's the deal? It was already possible to avoid most encounters when you wanted to save time, and the action combat system is too simplistic so it gets old quickly.

just run past every random encounter like a normal person, cs1 to kuro2 you get enough xp just from doing quests + bosses
other than fc and sc its probably possible to do everything without grinding in nightmare difficulty

Messeldam looks a little more interesting than your average Kuro town, but still the presentation of Calvard with these iphones, cars, modern yachts, etc, doesn't make it feel like the charming world of the earlier Trails games, but like mundane real life.

They've put gacha lootboxes in my Trails. I was hoping that the presence of them in Reverie was going to be a one-off.

Image

Oooooh we have a talent tree, some actual character customization of abilities beyond stats and universal spells. Only took Falcom 12 games to attempt it! We'll see how meaningful this turns out to be. Suikoden 3 and 5 introduced a skill system that made it seem like you could customize your character's abilities, but after many hours of fiddling around and testing it turned out to be a waste of time.

Image

I am not too keen on this new shard search feature so far. Now I am running around constantly scanning and looking for little morsels of gacha lootbox currency rather than being immersed in the world.

Another example of how Kuro feels divorced from the franchise. We never had homelessness before.

*sigh* it's another brothel.

You're saying it like fighting against trash monsters is somehow peak gameplay, well it's not and it never was. It's a waste of time supposed to slow you down. The only reason they added real time was so that you could clear trash faster, and it's a fucking good change. Every fight that matters is still turn-based only.

It's a waste of time

Every fight that matters is still turn-based only.

If the trash doesn't matter and isn't fun, then it should be removed.
But see, if you make every fight matter, then progression gets tedious, and casuals (95% of your audience, remember these are JRPGs we're talking about here) get bored and give up. SaGa tried this approach and the series only survived because its creator was extremely stubborn.

Wait, anyone could just delete the main repo? The company wasn't backing their stuff up to hard drives in case of an accident? I struggle to imagine that any company could have nonexistent security.

Battles in JRPGs needs to be rewarding, if it only feels like a waste of time without you gaining anything it is bad game design.
Either give good XP, money or chance for good loot drop.
I hated that in Unlimited Saga that you only get the reward after you finished the whole level, which made me hate every single enemy encounter.
