Guild wars in a nutshell: You click a button and something awesome happens. Or you lag out.

But seriously folks. Why is this game better than any other MMO ever?

Bunch of drones, lead by hype, who jump from one "totally awesome" hyped project to another.

Previous flavour of the month was D3, now its GW2.

Both are crap which drones will "realise" once they jump next hyped FOTM product.

If I already picked a shard does it mean I couldn't go in that guild without paying for a transfer?

Also as of now I wonder how party play is even doable with all of the overflow zones, and they last quite long.

I am playing an elementalist.

I don't think it was ever hyped as a "revolution", just a relaxing game with smooth combat, a good art style, nice music, nice game world and no monthly fees.

The quests are the same design... collect something over and over, kill something over and over, click something over and over.
the difference other than not having to look for quest givers and then walk for hours to some random area is that the quests are mixtures of activities and the activities in a given area always count, even if you just do them on the side while doing an event, for example. that choice makes a huge friggin difference.

transfers are free the first week, and it's quick and easy to boot. plus you can be in a guild on a different server, you just won't benefit from the other server's upgrades.

no monthly fees.

BTW, people who think there's "no monthly fee" -- think again. I'm willing to lay down money they release an expansion every 6 months. Amortize the cost of that thing and you've got your monthly fee simply rolled up into a semi-annual fee.

p.s.

Castanova is spot on 6 months per almost obligatory explansion/dlc/mission pac/episode (whatever they call it)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guild_Wars

Three stand-alone episodes and one expansion pack were released in the series from April 2005 to August 2007.

Except that you're not forced to buy it if you want to play, or you can wait for a hefty digital distribution discount.

Ye, right.

You will just sit around and wait for discounts while all your friends are doing new campaigns.

p.s. I am not explaining that this game is not "totally awesome". Why bother, 90% of fans would move to another "totally awesome" game in a month.

Check how many Diablo 3 fans are playing it now. Probably most moved to GW2 already, wanna bet? )

For me it's not being bound by sub thus having a feeling that I need to play only/mostly because I have month paid. Of course it's like paying for a sub money-wise if they keep releasing regular x-packs but I have no problem with that if the content is worth it and it keeps me interested all the time.

Then again I'm wasting my time replying to "hur dur you probably loved D3" guy

It's a pretty typical MMORPG with the (huge) perk that you can play at your leisure without feeling like you have to because you shelling out money every month. From the little I played of it, it seems like a big grindfest with a more fun/interactive world than the typical MMO.

But yeah, they sucked at monetizing the original Guild Wars and I'm sure they'll do a better job at it this time, aka more constant DLC/expansions.

You realize that you get content for free when you pay sub?

That same content that you have to buy in case of "no monthly sub".

A lot of the monetization seems to come from the gem store. you can buy xp boosts, magic find boosts etc for "gems" which you can buy for real money. There's also a gem/gold stock exchange where you can buy gems from other people at whatever rate the market will bear using ingame gold you get from quests. Occasionally, chests drop in the game that require special keys to unlock, buyable with gems. (Like Team Fortress 2 crates). I also got one of those keys as a story mission quest reward.

While we're asking for stuff, does anyone know of any good guides for classes. In paticular I'm trying to figure out which skills and traits to grab for my elementalist, as well as what weapon setup to go with.

I'm on Maguuma. My friend bought me the game and told me I had to play there. He chose it because its apparently the Something Awful 'official' server or something, I dont fucking know.
