This genre doesn't exist

it does exist in its original form which is the game Space Rogue which was a role playing game simulator hybrid. This is why the term was coined at origin.
Why the term became encompassing of everything not simulator is down to ex-Origin being lazy with marketing and labelling every game that they work on as an immersive sim. Before you knew it everyone was using the term.

I personally hate the term.

Arkane Frog may have declined, but their Austin studio has only done good stuff. Weird West looks like a hack job. "Oh look toss barrels at baddies how innovative!!1 immersuve sim!"

It's not just the camera perspective but everything I saw so far screams typical indie bundle fodder to me. The game doesn't looks appealing in any way and there is disconnect between the hype some people feel for it bc of who is working on it and what it was supposed to be and everything that was shown from the game itself.

As for Weird West - it's not so much that an Immersive Sim needs to have first-person perspective because someone wrote it down on a sacred tablet, but rather that if you've decided to make an isometric game, you're already labouring from a completely different perspective with completely different values - it could be a great game, but it won't be an Immersive Sim. We can debate the finer points with Skyrim, but not with this one.

Warren Spector considers Ultima VI to be the first immersive sim. The viewpoint isn't necessary as long as the world feels like an actual place through the use of its systems.

You know that saying, don't judge a book by its cover? Yeah, that's bullshit. There's an entire industry around making book covers that might convince you to pony up.

I don't judge books by covers, but if I'm at an airport, the book cover definitely influences my decision despite knowing that the quality of the cover is in no way related to the quality of the content. People are dumb like that
