Never played any of the DQ games in the past, decided to try DQ11, and after ~10 hours of forcing myself through this snorefest I think this is easily one of the worst jrpgs I've ever played.
Everything about it is jarringly simplistic - story, characters, combat, overall gameplay - very linear and bare bones. Feels like a game made to be a 1st jrpg for small children. I'm frankly a bit baffled, considering the series popularity and cult status - is it purely nostalgia based, are all of them like this? Maybe it becomes better in the 2nd half or something & I should give it a chance? So far if I had to rate all ~50 or so jrpgs I've played since snes/genesis era, excluding indies I'd put this one at the absolute bottom.
Also the music is horrendous, it literally hurts my ears.
Play DQ5 for a more mature story, but yeah overall DQ is more childish than all its peirs.

What? Heresy. It's actually good, at least for the DQs I played.

I haven't played 11 so I can't say a word about it, however I've endured DQ9 and that game is terrible in terms of story. If I had to recommend the best DQ games story-wise, it would be 5, 6, 7, then 8 (but 8 suffers from too many unskippable random encounters, to a point that it's painful). 4 is a bit lackluster in the sense that it tells multiple stories at the same time and in the end lacks explanation on the background of the main hero.

Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is.
I don't tend to buy many new games so I bought the 3 remake at full price. The new Ortega episodes seem really interesting. I'm wondering how they'll integrate into the game. Hopefully they don't drag the pace down.

I love how they put in the "appearance a/b" bullshitery and then IMMEDIATELY invalidate it by saying "appearance a is a hero" and "appearance b is a heroine".

Like what was the fucking point?!

The token censorship on the bikini armour was hilarious too. Like, why even bother making such a signal? They're going to bitch about it anyways, just tell anyone complaining about it to fuck off. If I were doing a remake these days I think I'd do some reverse censorship and make an outfit skimpier just to troll the retarded urinalists.

Oh yeah... Titty tassels twirrling cyclone attack. The jiggle factor would be off the charts. I think she should have a motor assist pullcord like a mower for combined synergy assist attacks (main protag needs to help). It never starts on the first pull.... that's the suspense!

This is a hilarious and accurate caricature! Why don't we stop pretending these things are human?

This mod aims to create the most authentic original experience within the HD-2D remake.

This (*will eventually) includes a full overhaul of the game's localization, character designs, etc to most accurately reflect the original artwork & language of the 1989 classic and bring forth that vision in to the modern age.

------

Changelog (v0.0.2):

-Simplified character appearance selection

-Applied design tweaks for the following vocations:

---Warrior, Type 7 (Female)

---Merchant, Type 2 (Male)

---Thief, Type 4 (Female)

-------

To Install:

Unzip the mod and copy the .pak file into [steamapps]\Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake\Game\Content\Paks

It's pretty good. The areas are beautiful.
My only nitpicks are the difficulty and the disappointing difficulty settings. Draconic isn't really more difficult it just lowers experience and gold gained a bit.

The autosave feature also eliminates any real punishment for wiping as it saves FREQUENTLY so you will always be just a few steps from where you died (if you ever do).
They really could do with some toggleable difficulty settings for people that want a challenge back, especially DQ vets who know how these systems work front to back going in.

^^ was honestly kind of worried about that.

I've been playing a good deal of DQ3 NES off and on for the past few months. Was watching my brother play the remake and it looked beyond easy. Just seeing one of his characters use the flame slash ability made me realize there weren't any melee skills whatsoever in the original game, and I doubt they'd make the remake more challenging to compensate. Not to mention whips didn't used to target entire groups of enemies, you had limited inventory space, seeds weren't raining from the sky unless you specifically decide to farm for them, etc.

The NES game still plays pretty good if you emulate it, play with fast-forward 2x-3x and turn down message speed a bit so you can still read what's happening each combat round. I know a lot of people prefer the SNES and GBC ports but it's been awhile since I've played them so I don't recall how they stack up difficulty-wise.

How am I supposed to get through this egyptian catacomb when they prevent me from using magic altogether while inside it?

Also fuck the sand monsters attacking twice per turn with an AoE attack.

The Anti-Magic area is just for that area. It's for a challenge to get the item at the end and leave with it, pops an achievement if you do.
The main dungeon lets you use magic freely.

The monster tamer class is quite strong once you unlock wild Side = a buff that allows you to attack twice per turn. You unlock this after you recruit 50 monsters. Monster Pile On - you unlock this after recruiting 10 monsters, but it keeps increasing in power the more monsters you recruit and its damage doesn't scale with any particular stat, so it's still great on classes with low offensive stats. With 100+ monsters recruited, it can hit for around 600-700 damage on 1 target.

Hero is better off as a support/healer, IMO. Offensively, he's going to be weaker no matter what compared to multi-classed damage dealers by the end of the game, and especially post game. And hero is the only class that gets omniheal, and to supplement that he can also use buffing items like the war drum to buff everyone's attack stat, and also the Orochi's sword which he can use to cast kasap to debuff defenses, or use any other items with good effects. I got paragon personality type on my hero, so he got very high str gains, but if I could go back I'd have picked genius on hero just for the boosted MP gains. They should have given hero an attack like ultra hit from DQ7 that could do at least 600-700 to 1 target just to make him relevant offensively for late and post game content.

Draconian run with a Lazybones Hero, Merchant, Tamer, and Clown; and the game still seems easier than running a 'serious' party in the original SNES version. Art direction is alright, with the environments generally being the strongest aspect of this -- despite the fact that overworld environments generally look pretty low res, and in general, low in environmental detail. Character sprites are a bit too 'billboard'-y, and party members only having four directional movement sprites is bothersome; even then, better than the DS/PS1 goddawful character sprites. Battle sprites are decent, but don't hold a candle to the Nintendo DS versions of DQ from either a key art standpoint, or even an animation standpoint. Its just annoying that even with this revision, that there is still no definitive version of this series. Overall, I'm okay with the first 7 games being redone with this template, just a shame so many compromises were made. Hopefully, someone makes a hardtype eventually that makes the game a bit less of a bore.

Is there a point to resting until dusk? I know night/day changes NPC dialogue and positions which unlocks new content but idk what the point of dusk is,

recruitable monsters only appear during specified times of the day. the game tutorializes this in the third(?) village, where a healslime only appears at dusk specifically.

Apparently I did shit out of order and I was meant to go after Robbin Hood before the pyramid. Dude didn't last 2 turns.

Just abdicated my position as King and I'm off to find a boat.
