Denuvo Says Doom Dropped Their Anti-Piracy Tech Because It Got The Job Done

Denuvo, once the iron-clad terror of pirates everywhere, was recently removed from two high-profile games, Doom and Inside. Why? After more than a week of speculation, Denuvo’s decided to clarify things.

“The simple reason why Denuvo Anti Tamper was removed from Doom was because it had accomplished its purpose by keeping the game safe from piracy during the initial sales window,” Denuvo’s Robert Hernandez said to me in an email. “The protection on Doom held up for nearly four months, which is an impressive accomplishment for such a high-profile game.”

He also said that there’s no truth to the rumor that Denuvo strikes deals with game publishers where, if their anti-piracy tech is cracked within a certain timeframe, publishers can get a refund. “We can’t comment on our deals with specific customers, but we do not have any deals in place that offer refunds if a game is cracked within a specific time frame,” Hernandez said. “However, each publisher is of course free to remove our anti tamper tech from their title once they feel the protection has achieved its purpose in protecting the initial sales window, or if they have other reasons for doing so, such as selling the title on DRM-free platforms.”

After a period of many months in which Denuvo seemed nearly impassable, hackers began to crack the code earlier this year. In addition to Doom and Inside, other games like Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst saw their defenses fall in recent months. Denuvo, however, claims that’s not the reason a couple publishers decided to peel it off their games.

“We don’t position Denuvo Anti Tamper as being uncrackable,” said Hernandez. “No anti piracy solution is. However, our goal is to keep each title safe from piracy during the crucial initial sales window when most of the sales are made.”

Denuvo responds to lightning quick Resident Evil 7 PC crack

Austrian company Denuvo has enjoyed unprecedented success against PC game piracy with games going uncracked for months - a feat seemingly impossible a few years ago. Notorious hacking group 3DM even predicted the end of PC game piracy altogether.

Denuvo's secret weapon is its Anti-Tamper technology, which shields a game's DRM and stops it being tampered with.

But there's been an upset: Resident Evil 7 has been cracked on PC and within only a week of launch. Are, um, cracks in Denuvo's impervious armour beginning to show?

"Please note that we always position our Anti-Tamper solution as hard to crack, not as uncrackable," Denuvo marketing director Thomas Goebl told me. "So far only one piracy group has been able to bypass it.

"As always, we continue working to improve our solution to create security updates for upcoming Anti-Tamper versions. We will do the same with the learning from this bypass. It's correct that the title in question was cracked some days after release. Given the fact that every unprotected title is cracked on the day of release - as well as every update of games - our solution made a difference for this title."

Given the Resident Evil 7 breach there is speculation Capcom could now remove Denuvo Anti-Tamper from the game altogether, and perhaps even seek a refund. Goebl said he couldn't comment on individual customers but told me "we do not have any deals in place that offer refunds if a game is cracked within a specific time frame".

Denuvo really began making a name for itself in 2014, when Dragon Age: Inquisition went uncracked for a month - aeons at the time. There is recurring concern among players that the Anti-Tamper technology affects a game's performance, although Denuvo has consistently said this is not the case. We tested Dragon Age: Inquisition performance and found no correlation between the two.

They're kind of right, most significant PC game sales are the pre-orders and the :d1p:. In the heyday of rampant piracy, games would be pre'd and released in advance of retail, weeks in advance in fact.

I don't know if their bullshit about no-refund policy is true, though.

He really should be selling the "future updates require all cracking work to start from zero" deuvo feature as as the main seller.
Pirates usually care more for dlc and patches then legit customers(most of the whining about torrents is missing dlc and is it the latest version?)
Let's take resident evil 7 for example, since the game was cracked so early any future dlc/updates will always be questionable considering only one pirate group is cracking denuvo and there are a lot of games out there that need cracking.
Not to mention modern games are mostly broken performance vise and these patches are a huge improvement for most people.

I don't want Denuvo to go away, it was a good indicator of a game so bad/boring that not even its publishers had any faith in it.

Even Inside, an indie title, was released with Denuvo the first couple of months. It seems to make business sense to developers and I'd rather have them use it than going out of business.
