Are there newer games with interesting necromancy/curses/evil magic systems?
What's got you into that stuff? Very specific request for occult roguelikes.
There's Infra Arcana; the Lovecraft stuff usually scratches that itch since that Crowley stuff was popular around that turn of the century time.
Lovecraft being a fork/branch of the occult movement.
Incidentally, I've been playing Infra Arcana a lot, which had me want similar dark spells but with a more complex system and more player agency than picking up manuscripts and levelling up characters. This works well for Infra Arcana but I want to try something more involved.
There's some classes/playstyles in Tales of Maj'Eyal that seem up your alley.
I haven't played all the classes (and their specific mechanics) yet in that game, but there might be something there for you.
Some that stick out:
Necromancer
Cursed
Doomed
The Defiler Classes
The Writhing One
Cultist of Entropy

I've had fun with the game, but it's just way to big to explore every class and their unique spell mechanics to find it all out.
I usually just default to playing Wizards or Battlemage type classes myself.
Hopefully it's got something for you.
Good call. I haven't played ToME in a while and not those classes.

Someone smarter than me complete this game (in many senses of the word):
I wonder what is the state of that project? I remember Incursion when Julian began to create it. I think the problem was that he wanted to create a custom scripting language or some kind of really low level stuff for the game which is not a great idea if you know that roguelikes are hard enough even with the best possible languages.

How is the game?
It's not a ~traditional~ roguelike, but it is a fun game. Pretty distinct, and Amplitude don't stick to one genre, so they don't tend to be overly confined by genre tropes as a rule. Would definitely recommend anyone to pick it up when the price is 0, even if there's only a small chance you'll appreciate it.

Trying CastlevaniaRL. Very hard (probably just imbalanced). Also not, seemingly, entirely procedurally generated, at least from what I can tell thus far.

Most my runs so far have ended almost instantly. :positive:

I'd like to see more of those NintendoRLs.
I remember thinking MetroidRL was a clever implementation of adding Z-axis platforming to a roguelike back around when I played it and CastlevaniaRL.

It fits the definition of 'Roguelike' I have for myself: "Do I get the same vibe I get when I play Rogue?".

Probably the best definition, really. Hard lists of specific traits or features are unnecessarily categoric at best, and still prone to ambiguity if you want to be fussy enough.

Nevermind that the Berlin Interpretation would preclude some pillars of the current roguelike scene, like ToME4.

I'd like to see more of those NintendoRLs.
There's actually quite a lot of these sorts of things if you look through old 7DRL entries, like this FF one, a MegamanRL, and a ZeldaRL (which is still being updated 16 years later!).

There was even someone working on a (now defunct) MarioRL. In case you haven't seen this list before, maybe you'll find something that's actually good: https://www.roguebasin.com/index.php/Roguelikes_based_on_Existing_IPs

Those are all on itchio now. His old site sometimes 404’d.
I see it's suffering the same fate as ToME 2.3.5
(highly recommend while you can still find it easily on the web)

You know I've been to that site like a thousand times in my life and never came across that stub.
Hopefully it expands.

Hmmm…. I must have a broken version. I admit I haven’t DL’d it in a long long time.

I didn’t even know there were towns with day/night cycle. That’s awesome!

Day/Night w/ I think weather effects (rain, fog, etc.).

The town to me is way too big and cumbersome to get around compared to what it does for you, but it's also about as far as I've gotten world-wise. I never really have enough money to buy anything, and I'm so beat up just getting there I die leaving it (enemies spam relentlessly). I'm not sure if you're meant to go back there repeatedly or what, perhaps via a teleport of some kind?

Vampire Killer-class seems the worst of them, but I'm guessing might have the highest potential as they can upgrade the whip. Playing that role, my guy frequently dies right at the very start heh. Also, I'm not sure if it's a bug or I'm missing something, but the guy you talk to at the start seems to become an enemy without any announcement or reason.

The RL's sense of "placement" seems slightly off with how monsters can jump right on you, making counter-attacks really confusing if you're using a non-bump character. I've already discovered a big bug regarding this that leads to an early-game exploit:

By the time you get to the town, night should be arriving. If you run upstairs (middle-north building), and then go to the ceiling, and then back down, enemies will fly to you on the staircase, but they won't hit you. So you can just hold down 5 (skip turn/attack) button, and watch as enemies zoom to you and get killed, rapidly skipping the night process and going back out of town. With no hunger/drink mechanic, you could theoretically max-exploit this if you wanted to.

Is there any good space-based roguelike?
I tried Out There Omega, but it's just too punishing to me. You die all the time due to RNG.

People seem to recommend Approaching Infinity, but I played the Dev's other RL game and it was just too simple and got boring very quickly...so I'm hesitant to buy.
