New Voting: The Codex’s Best Computer RPGs (pre-Diablo)

I’ve been wanting to have the hive mind’s opinion on what the best CRPGs were before the modern game era. So here we are, a thread giving each of you the opportunity to vote for the best CRPGs before the release of the original Diablo in December of 1996.

Rules:

Each Codex member gets to make one post allocating 10 points to a maximum of 5 games. You cannot allocate more than 5 of your points to any single game.

At the end of the New Year I will begin tallying up the points. The game with the most points when the votes are counted will be the in first place, second most points will be in second place, and so on.

Below is the list of games picked by the Ring of Prestigious Gentlemen:

I’d like to thank the Ring of Prestigious Gentlemen, who helped me put together the above list and gave me advice on how to proceed. The members were Decado, mondblut, ERYFKRAD, Fowyr, Zed Duke of Banville, JarlFrank, Dorateen, octavius, and zwanzig_zwoelf.

To answer some of the questions you may have, I wrote some Q & A.

Q: What made you want to put this together?

A: Felipepe has done some awesome work putting together the RPGCodex best of lists in the past. But the lists will always cater to the demographic of our users and will increasingly ignore older games as the years roll on. Those of us that grew up with or love to play games from the beginning years of the CRPG genre are dwindling in numbers and our opinions should be recorded while memories and experiences are still strong.

Q: Why did you decide upon Diablo as the cutoff?

A: I didn’t. Initially I thought it should be pre-Baldur’s Gate, which would have been CRPGs up to 1998. Then I thought pre-Fallout, which would have been 1997 as the cutoff. The Ring of Prestigious Gentlemen pointed out hardware changes that were occurring around the time Diablo was published. Also, for better or for worse, Diablo was an evolution that raised the popularity of the action RPG genre and hurt the market for turn-based RPGs.

Q: This game (Al-Qadim, Alien Logic, Hired Guns) is on your suggested RPG list, but it’s an action game with RPG elements. And you left off this other game (X-Com, Lords of Midnight, Stronghold) that has stronger RPG elements. This is bullshit!

A: I tried to stick with games that advertised themselves as RPGs and not strategy games. The list is as good as I and the Ring of Prestigious Gentlemen could make it without falling into a paralyzing “What is and RPG” argument.

Q: Bro, I’m in Europe and you missed the best CRPG of the pre-Diablo era (Istanbul Efsaneleri, Die Dunkle Dimension, Tera: La Cité des Crânes).

A: If the game was European, but had enough of an English speaking market we tried to include it in our list. Unfortunately, some games that look great probably do not have enough visibility on the predominantly English speaking RPG Codex to score enough points to make it on the finalized Best Of list that I’m trying to compile, even if it was a missed gem and the 'best eva'.

Q: Dude, up yours. I’m going to put in my vote for this awesome, obscure game anyway.

A: Okay.

Mentions: Calling upon the following fans of older CRPGs to vote on this thread, but readers should feel free to invite others:

Edit: Bolded a section for people who don't read good.

That's way too few points. :argh:

3 points:
Quest for Glory 4
Realms of Arkania: Star Trail

1 point:
Wizardry 7
The Summoning
Quest for Glory 1
Amberstar

Honorable mentions (I really wanted to vote for them, but they have no chances, so I'd be wasting points):
Dragon Wars
Anvil of Dawn
Legacy: Realm of Terror

EDIT: Since I apparently can't read, I've named 6. If the "5 games max" rule is not abolished (which I suggest it should, 10 points is limiting enough), move Amberstar to honorable mentions and give its point ot QfG1.

10 points to a maximum of 5 games
Damn, only five, what to choose... :negative:
But I see a lot of people vote for more than five games already.

So, two points to each if only 5 games are allowed.
Wizardry 7: Crusaders of the Dark Savant (Sir-Tech)
The Dark Heart of Uukrul (Digital Studios)
Might and Magic 2: Gates to Another World (New World Computing)
Pool of Radiance (SSI)
Dark Sun: Shattered Lands (SSI)
Or one point each for 5 previous games and one point each for these:
Eye of the Beholder
The Legacy: Realm of Terror (Magnetic Scrolls)
The Summoning
Aethra Chronicles Volume 1: Celystra's Bane (Michael Lawrence)
Untima Underworld

Well shit, apparently I can't read.
In my defence, that's damn long post most of which should have been under spoiler. Personally, I'd say fuck the 5-games rule, 10 points are limiting enough already.

Five is certainly too low of a number. I haven't even played most of the 80s games, and still I have too much to chose from.
So, if only five games are applicable, then two points each goes to:
Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall (Bethesda)
Darklands (Microprose)
Quest for Glory 4: Shadows of Darkness (Sierra)
Dark Sun: Wake of the Ravager (SSI)
Dungeon Hack (DreamForge)

If ten is applicable, then one point each to all above and one to additional five below.
BloodNet (MicroProse)
Al-Qadim: The Genie's Curse (Cyberlore)
Dark Sun: Shattered Lands (SSI)
Hero's Quest (Quest for Glory 1): So You Want to Be a Hero (Sierra)
Princess Maker 2 (Gainax)

Here's a revised list (2 points each):

Betrayal at Krondor
Darklands
Dark Sun: Wake of the Ravager
Ultima Underworld: Stygian Abyss
Wizardry VII: Crusaders of the Dark Savant

5 POINTS :
  • Dark Sun : Wake of The Ravager. IMO is a very underrated game. I have a thread explaining why it is so underrated >> Here is my thread. Dark Sun : Wake of the Ravager is underrated. And I suggest to people reading this thread to check the game. Is my favorite game from SSI. The dialogs, quest design, encounter design, area design, everything in this game is so great.
So I'm giving as much points as possible to this game. All other games, I like equally, so the dice will decide which one deserves 2 points in order to allocate 10(as giving 1 pt for 4 games + 5 for one will only allocate 9 pts)

TWO POINTS :

  • Eye of the Beholder (Westwood)

Now all resting are ONE POINT :
  • Eye of the Beholder 2: The Legend of Darkmoon
  • Ultima 7
  • Might and Magic IV: Clouds of Xeen
TL;DR : Dark Sun Wake of the Ravager = 5 points. Eye of the Beholder = 2 points(roll). Eye of the Beholder 1, Ultima 7 and M&M IV = 1 pt each.
