I wouldn't ever use any mods on any game on my first time through; and frankly the constant "lulz Codex, plz Google this for me: what MODZ should I use!?!?" is getting a little stale by now. Make your own choices, do your own research, form your own opinion.

Then come here and bitch about the shitty mods you picked, and then, maybe, you'll too learn the way of the angry cunt. Until then, just shut up and play the game, or don't.

Google is risky, because you don't know what kind of people is giving advice and increase your chance of getting spoiled.
Also there aren't first runs or anything for me. I only run RPG one time, i don't do second runs, so i will do MY run with or without mod.

This is just weird.

Games like ToEE are made for different runs with different partys.
Doesn't mean everybody has to like it. And it doesn't mean everybody has to play it that way.

Few single player games are worth replaying a second time. Too much repetition. Only after massive memory loss is it conceivable.

Just that it's not "lulz this, plz that" but I know there are people who can give me recommendations what I should start with in order not wade through every shit, so I can start playing sooner. I personally like very much giving people a summary of what I learned, and not act the cool kid.

Imo that's strength of communicating in a group of people with the same interest. Or even the whole point of forums.

I'd recommend the C08 mod, but that was from a couple years back, and it has changed since.

I guess I just do not like mods, sorry. I have yet to see a mod that was on par with the original content and didn't suffer from awful writing, amateurish voice-acting, bad item placement, illogical adventure structure and overpowered items that do not fit in with the loot level of the rest of the game. Also frequent grammar/spelling mishaps, which to me just ruin a game completely. There are no good mods (that I have encountered and aren't purely graphical, and even then the new, "improved" graphics often simply do not mesh well with the others).

That's why I can't stress often enough: the first time through, just say NO to mods.

If you mean a couple years literally, then you're referring to the 5.0.0 mod. The latest version has indeed changed from that - in ways the Codex would probably like.

As far as I know, Co8 let's you only install components that fix bugs, without added content.

Pretty much. Calling it an all out mod is maybe too much, but considering how much content is fixed, it's more than a simple bug fix. You really should not play it without it.

Yep, the version I used just fixed bugs, of which there were many, apparently.

The fixes of the CO8 mod are definitely worth installing. Some of the added/restored content is, well, just plain kinda weird. Some of it is enjoyable though. I'd say the extra stuff is worth installing on a 2nd playthrough, if the game entertains you enough to play it twice.

As far as the original game, I'd say it absolutely excels in two respects:

1. Best graphics I've ever seen for a top-down view game. The attention to detail (other than faces) is outstanding.

2. Best adaption of D&D rules, any edition, by far. No other game really comes close.

Pretty much everything else about it fails to one degree or another, though. Dialogues are really bare-bones, and only a few really good encounter designs. But, really, A for effort... few games can boast of being the best at any one thing, much less two. The end result is more enjoyable than most games.

I will definitely try out Keep on the Borderlands when it's born. The quality of the engine and graphics makes this a -prime- candidate for a total conversion. Can't think of any other engine/graphics that I'd prefer for it, really.

In a P&P game, Homlet would have been cool.

But in a PC game, running from A to B to C to A to [...] just gets annoying after a certain amount of time. Especially after the first time.

Yeah module T1 which is Homlet and the moat house is considered one of TSRs best adventures, I still use it when running P&P games if I need a town in a jiffy. It just doesn't work in a computer game though. Most people were disappointed by T2-3 as the temple itself was in the end a pretty stock standard dungeon, that missed the depth of Homlet. However it makes for a better computer game.

The story and atmosphere are quite crap, just look at the stupid town names, Homlet, Verbobonc...

However, the combat is so well balanced that this is the only game that I was able to finish in "Iron man" mode, and this from the first run! The game has a selectable mode in the menu - "Iron man" - in which you are not allowed to save, the game being auto saved on exiting. If your entire party dies, there is no save game to reload. Luckily the game never crashed on me with only the official patch applied, although some lags were experienced in elemental nodes. Of course, I used a classic party covering all basic classes, and I didn't dare to fight the Balor. This way of playing was a lot of fun, and not extremely difficult.

There's a debate going on whether to implement an effective endgame mechanic for parties that commit wholesale slaughter of Hommlet/Nulb, a la Baldur's Gate . I think Codexers might want to chime in on this. (same thread as above, you can reply here as well)

How about a 10AC t-shirt that says "I slaughtered Hommlet and all I got was this lousy shirt." It would very much compliment the Buster Sword.
