It's my duty to buy the Steam version so Cassidy, Octavius, HHR, et al. can hold on to the hope that one day, two decades from now when Steam fails I'll lose access to a game I got for ~$5 and they can pull out the smug emotes (never mind at that point I can simply torrent the widely available GOG version).

How people can worry about an offline game vanishing from an open platform like the PC is beyond me.

The real threat is server-side bullshit like Diablo 3.

This is counteracted by the fact that these server side games are pure shit. No one will care that they disappear.

If I wasn't so goddamn lazy I'd do some videogame porn pictures myself, but I don't think I have it in me to make a pile of discs and take a picture. Though maybe I should do a kool kredits picture and pile all the Fallouts (Even Brotherhood of Steel god help me) and Troika games or something. Then again I'd have to dig around a bit to find everything and that sounds like a pain in the ass. Especially since they're scattered to the four winds in a few different locations, and some of 'em like ToEE IIRC didn't come in jewelcases. So I'd have to root through discs in white paper sleeves to try to find it aaaaaaaaand grumph. Plus it's probably been a good year+ since I touched a game disc, would hate to break my streak now.

Then again I can see Fallout 1, 2, Tacics, New Vegas, Baldur's Gates 1 and 2 and ToB, Bloodlines, and Arcanum right now without moving. And SS2. Maaaaaaaaaaaaan. Double then again I can also see World of Warcraft, Oblivion, Deus Ex Invisible War, Dungeon Siege, Diablo 3, and Master of Orion 3. The moment is lost, the magic is broken~

I have one of those too. I got it when I was about 11-12 and in therapy because I was depressed and stuff. My therapist thought it would be a good idea to buy me a copy of one of his favorite games, System Shock 2, because obviously giving bio-horror nightmare fuel to a disturbed child is a sure-fire way to make him cheer up and become a level-headed, functional member of society.

Come to think of it, I never did see any of his credentials.

I bought SS1 on a budget re-release, later eBayed myself a proper boxed copy. I was given my copy of SS2 because a friend of mine thought it would be a shooter Half-Life style and was disgusted by what he got instead. He was going to throw it away with some other games. I took those games as well. Wing Commander 3 and Outcast, among others that I can't recall right now.

I hope you mean ex-friend.

There was some kind of licensing SNAFU with the game... no one was selling it, because the vultures couldn't decide who got first pick.

And it will more than likely be tweaked to run on Win7. I can't get my SS2 to run on Win7 64bit without crashing at least every 15 minutes.

I don't think they're going to do any "Enhanced Edition" or shit like that, but they might sell it for between $15 - $20.

I'm basing that on
The extra content being bundled as part of the GOG release will be “well worth the price”, we’re told.
from that flesh eating zipper website where the story broke.

I assume that means GOG version will be more expensive than Steam's.

They could charge a premium for SS2 for sure, especially if they have a lot of extras or significantly tweaked it. Of course I thought that SS2 got its own modern system mod like the Thief games did anyway.

GOG was down for server maintenance a bit ago. Their forum thinks this is a sign.

Yeah it received unofficial patch last fall along with Thief games. I bet it's one of the reasons why they think it's right time to milk monetize it.

Even for new games, the fact that I can pay GOG in $ and not in € like Steam means it's more advantageous for me to buy from GOG. And so far the only games of their catalogs that have been above the 9.99$ mark were recent ones, so I'd be very surprised if SS2 broke that trend.

how is this incline

Game from like 14 years ago is still considered relevant enough to be sold alongside new games. More people will play it and realize Alien Colonial Marines may not be the best thing ever. Industry may notice still care about it and may copy elements of it for their new games. Etc
