If the AI was the only issue I had with this game I'd be tempted to try it again. As it stands I'll take your word for it.

Best skirmish RTS of the year.

It could be better as the research tree forces you to invest heavily into one path only (especially team games get b0rked because of this) and nukes are a bit too easy to acquire. It definitely lost some things (biggest omissions imo are more stealth/radar play and bigger maps) but there are loads of stuff I'd wish they would patch into FA straight away (pretty much every experimental, the new pathfinding and loads of small improvements). The AI has gotten all the attention from SupCom/FA-modder-now-turned-into-GPG-developer Sorian in the last few patches btw, it's more than decent.
