That writing sample is serviceable; nothing to (no pun intended) write home about. Its good that they've finally admitted that the animations are retarded, and that they're looking to hire someone suited to improving them. They don't look very likely to hit their Kickstarter goal, but something purchase-worthy might end up coming out of this, eventually.

Would have been nice if they had pulled their heads out of their asses earlier in the campaign, though.

If this doesn't make it I fear we will have missed something interesting.

They obviously know how to code and their aesthetics are good.

Donate the money to NASA instead. Acquire magnet liquid and space colonies. That's interesting.

I appreciate the subtle humor they have employed with the title. Rather nice of them to hint at the nature of the game.
It probably has a much deeper meaning that will change your view on game naming forever.
Sui is an ancient word of a lost language meaning numerous things. An all encompassing wholeness is the simplest way to explain.
Generis is too an ancient word from a dead language. It means lineage and nobility.
The name can be anglicized as So Generic.
So Generic?

A monocled man should know that it means in fact the opposite.

It may have been a joke, but witty it wasn't. Quite the opposite, it was a display of ignorance.

sui generis (not comparable)
  1. In a class of its own; one of a kind.

Name may be witty or not, you may be a newfag or an old fag, but it does not change the fact that one good darn project is going to miss its goal...:(

Even if Maddoc guy is butthurt, it is sad.

Agreed. Still harboring a tiny spark of hope that they can pull off a Hero-U, get the money by a tiny margin and then laugh at other projects that won't make it make the game.

Well, they are above 50% with a week to go. Hero-U was about 60-65% if I recall corectly. On the other hand Hero-U was asking for more money, so their last week's ride was worth like 150k$. Sui Generis needs slightly above 100k$ at this point.

My prediction is they will not make it, unless there is a sudden release of super-interesting updates (unlikely) and super-positive news in mainstream game media (unlikely).

I pledged the minimum (as for most of those KS projects save for W2 and Legends of Eisenwald). But I would consider raising it up to the boxed edition, if it is absolutely necessary and I see the devs care enough to produce some nice updates. As of now, they all are poor and I am afraid, it is too late to raise the bar now.

I remember reading somewhere that 90% of Kickstarters, that get over 30% of their funding goal, also reach 100%.

But of course this project can easily fit into that other 10%.

I don't know whether this kickstarter would succeed or not, but I know one thing - their project lead is bloody hilarious.
Xardas Kane says:

They have posted some generic lore, the most generic plot setup in the universe, some generic gameplay information (open world! choices!) and a piece of dialogue that’s not just generic, it’s genuinely godawful. Also, a combat video that shows off an incredibly simplistic and seemingly clunky system.

Nothing from what I’ve seen so far points to a good game. I would love to be proven wrong though.

Madoc says:

I really don’t need to reply this, you’re just the last raging troll refusing to face extinction. Everything you say has long been answered, or it’s just plain ridiculous to begin with. I just can’t help myself though, I just have to engage in the futile excercise of answering to things that lack even the slightest hint of objectivity.

Nothing about our “lore” is in the slighest bit generic, not even the little we’ve revealed. Anything that might appear generic is in fact a parody. You can’t even imagine how much we hate generic fantasy, we find it deeply insulting. We’ve also said we’re not going to explain it in detail becasue we want you to discover it playing the game. This isn’t a bloody excuse. We’re not trying to trick people here!

So you don’t like our writing example. Fair enough. I must wonder however what you might be comparing this to contextually. Also, as clearly stated, this was provided a stylistic example and not an actual dialogue example.

Generic gameplay? Seriously? We’re breaking like every single convention in the genre here and introducing numerous completely original concepts. How can you possibly even claim to surmise that it’s generic?

Saying our combat is “incredibly simplistic” has to be the most objectively false statement I’ve heard in quite some time. Again, how did you arrive to such a conclusion? Did you read any of the provided material or did you just conjure this up from some arcane source of knowledge?

And please stop treating us like we’re some sort of marketing savvy company using buzz words. We’re being completely honest about everything here and explaining _exactly_ what we mean to do, not finding some excuse to claim that we’re going to do it.

Oh, a quick reminder: we haven’t made a game yet, we are providing a concept here like many other Kickstarters. The exception is that we’re also proving we can and want to do things, we’re not just raising money to mope around and play with the Unity engine.

Pretty amazing technology he has in the character animations. The characters look half drunk, but I think people would look like that in a real fight. I found a comment of his at Gamedev that said there are 15000 lines, just in the character animation code. He might have been exaggerating, but it would be a coding nightmare and definitely not worth it, if what he is saying is half true. I can't see this game turning out as anything other than an open world Diablo, or GTA with swords though. He's far too interested in pushing the technology, to attempt an RPG as the Codex would like it.

Whether they're capable of delivering what they promised is another story, but input animations are place holders made by programmer. They are going to hire professional animator and fencing enthusiast to make final ones.

This fencing video has probably little to do with real combat. They attack to touch and score, not to penetrate armor and kill. They have 10+ seconds of break after each few blows. They wear ultra light protective gear. Had they run at each other 100m with 30 - 40 kg of gear on them first, then attempted to penetrate enemy armor with their blows and thrusts for real, without a break every few seconds, they would look like drunken idiots in no time.

In this tournament you need adequate impact to have a hit counted, and even with their protective gear people still get broken bones from impact (usually hands). You're obviously approaching this from a position of complete retardation ignorance, it's like saying judo makes for easy falling because you're not doing it on concrete.

Holy shit you think the average footsoldier carried 30 - 40kg of gear into combat?

Here's another vid, spot the drunken idiots.

Keeping your balance is an integral part of any martial art/combat sport ever, so where is your evidence of people fighting like drunken idiots, other than outside pubs and clubs which involve real drunken idiots? Perhaps you should think about how what you see in movies and games isn't how things work in real life.

All the videos you are showing, the people look off balance. Why are you asking for evidence, when you are providing it?

As for martial arts, yes it can look elegant as long as it doesn't go on very long. But if you put two people in a real fight, with no refs, no rules, within a few minutes it degenerates into an ugly scrap. Martial arts is not real fighting, it is just art.
