I think one of the main reasons the game bombed in Japan was because of the console it was on and not the content of the game. WiiU didn't do too hot there. Anyway I read somewhere that Nintendo said that they consider this to be one of their major franchises now so expect more #FE in the future.
I can only imagine it would have done better if it had been on the 3ds, even in the west. People who are mostly interested in JRPG and not much else are not going to own a Wii U.
The Wii U, in pure sales number, actually sold more than the PS4 in Japan.

> The Wii U crossed the three million mark. The Wii U has sold 3.02 million units lifetime, the PlayStation 2.26 million units, and the Xbox One 64,543 units.

But in a country where it's hard to even convince people to own a home console rather than handhelds, people tend to own multiple consoles less and all the japanese RPG players are on the PS4 enjoying bloodborne and the soon to come Persona 5.
For comparisons, the PSVita, which was a massive failure in the west, sold 5m, which is about as many units as the WiiU and PS4 combined. Not surprising that it would end up getting all those blobbers. The 3ds sold 20.7m in Japan which is 2m more than it sold in the US, and 4m more than in the entirety of Europe.

There isn't a big market for home consoles in japan these days. Even Nintendo is going to enter the smartphone market too, despite having the highest handheld sales. Nintendo never wanted to make games for something other than their own consoles, but even they still want a bite of that juicy smartphone market.

They are making FE for mobiles.

It looks like N has shipped 3 million Wii U in Japan, while Sony sold 2.2 million. Slightly less impressive considering they're currently selling ~4x as many PS4s as Wii Us.

Sounds like an issue that will correct itself eventually.

Doubt that, I think vgchartz is accurate here considering that the Wii U routinely goes out of stock in Japan, meaning they tend to ship less than they can sell.

They can't be overshipping unsold units vs sony when we're talking about nation wide shortages.

For hardware sales they're pretty close. And like I said, pretending they have more "shipped" than "actually sold" when we're talking about something that is literally out of stock everywhere.. is bullshit.

Reports are coming in that Japanese retailers are currently dealing with Wii U stock shortages. Japanese consumers are reporting the very same thing on social media as they try and get hold of a console. The explanation behind the shortages seems to be that Nintendo was caught unaware by the surge of Wii U purchases in Japan during the holiday season and hasn’t replenished enough stock. It’s only a matter of time before the stock is refreshed. Still it’s very unusual for this situation to occur with Nintendo’s current home console. Here’s what we know so far regarding Wii U stock situations in Japan.

  • Amazon.co.jp doesn’t have any units left in stock (only third-party sellers are selling it)
  • Yodabashi doesn’t have units left in stock either (both online and in stores), but back orders are still available
  • Tsutaya also sold out online
