It makes sense, SEGA is in the strategy space already with Creative Assembly and to a lesser extent the Football manager series. Also the company has under-gone restructuring lately to focus more on the digital market (ie, Computer gaming).

Not to mention the recent Warhammer licensing recently should allow for a smoother transition to acquiring the dawn of war franchise. Realistically the only other alternative is EA, and i wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

Didn't know that yet. Mostly because I don't feel like wading through a dozen pages of aspies being aspie. Ok news btw. Nice to know Relic will keep on trucking and also nice to know they won't end up on the endless list of boned out developers that were aqcuired by EA only to be sucked dry and tossed aside.

What's surprising to me is that sega would have enough funds to purchase new studios - I thought they were in the middle of a restructuring and cutting off the excess fat. Or is Relic selling for peanuts?

Even if they could easily afford it, buying an RTS studio when you already own one is certainly an interesting move.

Maybe they are trying to build a niche within the industry? It's not like they would have a lot of competition.

Football manager and Total war are lucrative for them, while all their mid tier console crap has been belly flopping left and right those two pc franchises have been matching and exceeding financial targets time after time. They'll be wanting to repeat that success with relic.

If that's true then... well, i think i'm ok with that. At least it's not EA, or fucking Ubishit. But i wonder what will happen with the 40k license.

Sega buying Relic is quite possibly the best case scenario. Who else could possibly buy them out of the major publishers? ActiBlizz? I vomit at the mere thought. EA? Might as well gouge out my eyeballs with a rusty spoon. Ubishit? No thanks. Square-Eidos? Eh they actually wouldn't be that bad.

The question is though, do they get Relic with the Homeworld IP? AND WILL WE FUCKING EVER GET HOMEWORLD 3?!

Probably

Homefront went to Crytek for 500K though.

Actually, I think since many years ago, especially along with the downfall of arcade market and Sega's own console, I thought Sega was supposed to crumble, not unlike Sony? i.e. have products, have fame, but no profit at all, and would die slowly. It seems Total War really helped them to survive.

Anyway I'm cool with Sega, especially as they keep releasing (even though I never play) sweet, moe, kawaii Hatsune Miku games. I love Miku ^_^

Sega went through major restructuring last year. Shut down most publishing offices around the world, merged the US and UK offices under one management, and stated to do a lot more smaller digital only stuff in the future, with Retail releases only for their big four franchises (Total War, Alien, Sonic, Sports).

Seems like that strategy is working for them. For now.

Who changed the title to one that doesn't mention Sega buying relic? :rpgcodex:

Also that Zenimax bid, although Sega couldn't really afford to get outbid. It has the Warhammer license and Relic is the one developer that is guaranteed to make a w40k title that sells. It's an obvious and logical move really.
