FFS, Tim Cain! You used to be a cool guy.

This is why devs no longer post here. They develop shit taste for shit games.

Anyway, that's a fuckton of RPGs. I haven't played more than a third of those.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
I'm going with Morrowind. I've played it daily for about a year and must have racked well over 1000 hours in total, and it was just for the mod free xbox version (I didn't have and could not afford a half ass decent PC at the time so I bought an xbox to play it). I don't give a shit about choices and consequences as long as the story is good and I get to explore with as few restrictions as possible and Morrowind delivers on both fronts. Not to say that it doesn't have its problems (in particular, ES enchanters beat the living shit out of any other type of character, something that held true for Oblivion too and Oblivion doesn't even have an enchanting skill).

Great write-up, DU! You should do it more often, you lazy fuck.

The developers' choices are disappointing though. NWN? Seriously?

Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

There are so many things about this game that I loved. It was an open sandbox world, where I was free to go where I wanted and act how I wanted, and I had to live with the consequences of my actions. I became a vampire (and got cured later), I joined every guild and reached leadership status in them (and I loved the Dark Brotherhood the most), I did every Daedric shrine quest, and I explored most of the continent. In fact, I ignored the main storyline for most of my playing of this game, and I had more fun with the guild storylines and with trying to get every house in the game. The huge combination of skills, stats, spells and items, and the detailed character customization at the beginning of the game, really made me feel that I could play roleplay anyone I wanted. The game is not without its flaws (the auto-leveling of monsters springs to mind), but overall, this game was everything I wanted in an RPG: open-ended, re-playable, good-looking and downright fun.
Now THAT's how you troll.

Surprising choices from the devs, and now Volourn will have plenty of ammo when praising NWN to the moon. Lol'd at Tim's troll response. Sucks none of the Obsidian guys were able to participate.

And I get the feeling Gaider was never even asked.

I think even Cleve was asked and agreed! But his response never saw the light of day... he was probably too busy with grimoire.

So, Tim Cain must be a troll because he likes a game that people here hate?

OK, whatever you have to tell yourself to sleep at night.

If you listen to these guys, it's surprising how few games they actually play. I'm sure they're busy and all, but even the games they supposedly do play, they make it seem like they haven't played that much of them.

I bet if you were working on a game all day the last thing you'd want to do is go home and play games.

Your opinion is different from mine, you must be butthurt.

Just like if Tim Cain's favorite game is different from mine, he must be trolling.

There were so many good RPG’s released in the last decade that it is hard to choose the “RPG of the Decade”. I am embarrassed to say that I haven’t played some of them, and I only want to nominate a game that I have played. And that list is still large: Baldur’s Gate 2, Icewind Dale 2, Neverwinter Nights, Dragon Age (Bioware is on a roll in my list, you can see), Fable, Deus Ex, Fallout 3, Geneforge. So I am going with a game that captured my imagination and that I played for many many hours, and that I think about when designing my own games. And that game is Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Not to make a revelation of 'biblical' proportions, but I've always found those with the surname Cain to be traitorous, lying, cynical bastards. It holds true even in the Game Development industry. :(

FFS You can post dumb shit, moron. Did you even bother to fuckin' read why they picked what they did? Tool. Someone prefers something i don't. Boo hoo. Typical Codexian Butthurt.

Then again, you picked ARC. ARC is a very good game, but best of the decade? No fuckin' way.

Speaking of which, I don't really care if Tim Cain really likes Oblivion. It's the reasons he gave that are disappointing. Do everything in one playthrough? Shit, for that alone it should get the worst of the decade award.

And I know you weren't talking about this, princess, but as always your posts keep inspiring me.

Published in 2000, Deus Ex was a forecast for the whole decade, the most influential title and an omen of incoming changes. Even excellent games that tried to stick to "the old-ways", like the remarkable Arcanum, simply went extinct. There were, however, titles that learned the lesson - with Vampire: Bloodlines being probably the most brilliant RPG design of decade, which strongly influenced The Witcher as well. Eventually, Mass Effect 2, a direct descendant of the aforementioned titles opened a new decade with a perfected design of the next generation of RPG experience.
