But why is this needed though? While no games is a bit of a meme, Sony hasn't even given PS4 owners a real reason to upgrade yet, since everything is still being released on PS4. A slight upgrade over a system that's already a slight upgrade on some games? The new system is still quite expensive too, why buy a 499$ console when you could buy one for 199$ or so and suffer no real difference?
Wasn't Spider Dash Man a PS5-only game? What a terrible game to use to try to make people upgrade.

Biggest benefit for me is couch gaming with a console and lack of not giving a fuck. Also if you got friend who aren't in the PC master race you can play console games with them easily and talk shit on the mic. Main downside for me is that some games just can't translate to a console controller very well, mainly very PC based games.
This is propaganda! I played Elite Dangerous, Divinity Original Sin, and Pillars of Eternity on PS4pro and the controller worked perfectly. At any given time in Elite I was only missing one axis but I set the alternate control toggle to a thumbstick-click so I always had access; I didn't use the lateral left-right thrusters much anyway unless I needed to make aggressive evasive barrel-rolls. The controller also had more than enough buttons and button combinations to handle all of the ship's various systems. As for DOS and PoE, they're absolute cakewalks with a controller. I'm currently replaying Deus Ex and Drakensang and I would kill for some controller patches for them. I guess if you want to make 360 no-scope headshots you need a mouse, but I'm not really into the dudebro scene of Tarkov and COD or whatever.

Despite Bloodborne not being optimized for PS4 PRO or PS5, it runs better on them. Playing BB on the original PS4 is an experience in itself, you get dips to low 20s in addition to the fucked up frame pacing.

This is why you should always mod your consoles, the Bloodborne mod patch improves the game tremendously, even on the regular PS4.

I'm in the minority, but having grown up on limited hardware with low specs, even as an adult now, I find 60fps super weird and when I can I limit it to 30.:oops::oops::oops::oops:

I have a modern computer with a 4070 and I set up the frame limiter to BG3 to 25 .

Yeah, agreed. I do have a PS5 but most people I know have not upgraded. I mainly have a PS5 because I did not have a PS4 and so the set of games it allowed me to access was bigger than just the famously short list of PS5 exclusives. Seems unlikely that I would upgrade.

PSVR2 has not ended up being particularly huge (I haven't bought it). So what's the benefit going to be for people? 4K? PS5 already does it. Extra detail? Are devs really going to go back and rebuild their games for another new release target? A lot of developers still haven't done that for the base PS5.

I'm not quite that bad, but 60fps definitely took getting used to, nevermind higher rates. I always find frame rate whining confusing though since to me basically anything above 25 looks fine.

The only genre that really had a hard time on consoles was the RTS. The control site issue of that kind of went away with analog sticks, and the other issue of them on consoles went away went HD TVs became the norm. Funnily, when the RTS was the most easy to play on consoles they kind of stopped releasing them on consoles to a large degree.

But during the PSX era they were pretty horrible. And the resolution of CRT TVs didn’t help much during the XBOX/PS2 era. But by the time of the 360 and HD TVs it worked OK.

RTS controls still suck, the mouse is simply more precise, faster and responsive when selecting units or issuing orders. The analogue stick changes nothing in this regard because like the d-pad it is still a "hold and wait until cursor moves in that direction" solution where if you overshoot you need to hold the opposite direction, impacting the mentioned responsiveness and speed of the controls. Not sure why you think the stick helped a lot, the only "problem" it solved is that you can control the scroll rate.

And this is before you get to various UX/QoL things missing like keyboard shortcuts, awkward group designation, jumping through menus to issue orders.

On top of this is anyway the issue of hardware, PCs traditionally had better CPU power and memory availability, this helps with large armies doing pathfinding or firing physics-based projectiles.

I like to click on a game and play
No such thing since PS3 was released, mate. I miss the plug-and-play video games, PS2 gen was the last gen like that, if anything.
Nintendo Switch? It has no hard drive for game installs, only an SD card slot and limited flash memory. I normally don't even update it.
The switch is pretty good - although you have to click though, updates are not mandatory and necessarily fairly small.

But you do have to find the game cart and the whole device is unplayable (even when docked) when completely out of battery.

Digital downloads remove the cart issue at least.

Why would you trust Nintendo with digital licenses? Weren't a ton of people burned by the Virtual Console? I didn't have a Nintendo between the Gamecube and Switch.

Why would you trust any of them with digital licenses?

Anyway this is a reasonable point, but depending on the game, sometimes significant portions of it or even all of it need to be downloaded anyway. Nevermind if you're playing one of those cloud games where the cart... I don't even know what the cart is for at that point. Shows you have the license and directs you to the server?

That's why you mod it: you pay nothing for games and can keep backups. Not to mention the other benefits of a modded Switch.

I do look forward to modding it at some later date. Battery replacement on the switch is not that hard so the device should have a long afterlife

At that point, wouldn't it be better to emulate with a computer? I've only played Tears of the Kingdom and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker that way so far. I don't have any opportunities to play outside of my apartment, so the console is always docked. Breaks at work aren't long enough and I barely take public transit.

If the game emulates well, but it's nice to not have to worry about that. Plus one of the benefits to modding it is the ability to overclock it so that the more demanding games run better on the original hw.

Looks as if it's real and it's going to be revealed soon, possibly between the 13th and 19th of September based on what I've read.

Better not be. That fucker is massive and wont fit in my entertainment center.

Well, it's going to closer the original model's size based on the recent leaked info. It'll be compatible with the Slim's covers and the detachable drive, though.

This render is based off the recent leak about the design, needs to be a bit wider, but the real one will probably look similar

Although consoles have limited appeal for me personally, it's worth noting that people are willing to invest thousands in gaming laptops that suffer from poor thermal performance and comparatively low sustained levels of TDP and GDP vs. both PCs and consoles. Of course, there's also the upsurge in Steam Deck and similar devices. I wonder where these fit into the picture.
Can't talk about Steam Deck, but as someone who has been only playing with Laptops for almost a decade now, and recently brought myself an entry-level gaming laptop:
- Lower power drawn (important because power prices are INSANE here)
- Being able to use my computer during a power outage without having to buy a fucking No-Break
- Convenience of being able to easily relocate and place my laptop everywhere*
- Occupy way less space.

Honestly, I brought this machine mostly for work and pre-emptive before my old Thinkpad T430 died, but I definitively thought of gaming as well.
I don't mind the inferior power vs PCs because I don't care for having super-duper powah PC - for what, to play shitty unoptimized AAA games? I can run everything I want right now and likely will be able to for the foreseeable future.

I spent from 2016-2023 living in a pretty small house where I didn't have space for a computer, so laptops were the name of the game for me since then.

Last week we had the house painted then cleaned. I even had to do a job interview while it was being painted. It was simple for me to relocate my machine somewhere it wouldn't be affected by stray paint and/or dust going around. This would have been total ass if I had a desktop computer. I literally have a place in my closet just to store my laptop in case I need to.

What really annoys me about Laptops is the price, Laptop Prices are insane here. It's also ass having to do the maintenance, It's hard to find someone trustable.

I don't see the appeal of a Steam Deck myself either, maybe someone can elucidate.

I own the PS5 since early 2021. Performance has been great in all games I have played so far, no technical issue aside from controller batteries going bad.

In comparison the Asus gaming laptop I bought in late 2022 is full of issues and rarely runs last gen games decently. With the console I don't have the hassle of adjusting configurations, updating hardware, etc.

There is also something special about coming home from work, sitting in the living room couch and turning on the controller to play on the large widescreen tv. So much better on my eyes, back and posture than putting the laptop on my lap(which radiates my balls) or on some desk. And it is equally better than some PC on a gaming chair, before someone suggests it.
