  • I think we want to funnel the bad guys into an area where they can be shot at from two or three sides. Maybe between the Saloon and Casino, or on the main street. Place the PCs around this central killing zone, with plenty of good shooter NPCs. Make sure they have plenty of ammunition.
  • But we also need a few fast NPCs as lookouts at various places around the edge of town, to see what the enemy is doing. Probably not as many as I've placed on the map.
  • We should try to block other entrances, if we can. As well as the streets, block off any random doors, stairs, balconies, ladders and things like that. Anything that can be used as a sneaky way into town -- including crates and boxes.
14606.jpg
We could also try to leave a side way deliberately opened and trap it so that we can divert their assault a little. Some narrow opening where they will be forced to engage in close combat for our melee experts.

"White men and their thunder sticks..."
The whitest indian you have ever seen seems to appear from a side of the street.

"All you need is a knife and to *be* the shadows - see how easy it was for me to get here. But don't worry, we have the same goals here, dear-" His sentence is interrupted by a bout of heavy, liquid coughing that almost put him to his knees.
"Ha, nothing that a good cigar can't heal".
With that said, the man you get to know as Voho gets a large, bulky cigar from a case and lights it, then starts helping you with the preparations. He is, however, lightly armed, only bringing his knife, his spear and his guts to the battle.

"Say, you pals with Doc Holliday?" Enquires Cormac.

As the group is about done with the preparations and most people are laying in wait for what they consider an inevitable battle, the men and women on the saloon rooftop, which is the highest in the city, hear what sounds like gunshots echoing north-west, in the direction of where the Sheriff left on his voyage to Denver to hand the Woman with No Name to the court. It's hard to tell due to the distance, it's well outside city limits, but there do seem to be a few small lights out there in the night prairie, like little fireflies that come alive and then die immediately after. And a lot of them. It takes about a minute and a half for the noise to step sounding across the vast, silent land, and for the lights to seemingly disappear permanently...

Tencount Cormac wastes little time to intimidate the post office boy into lending him his thoroughbred, and gallops out towards where they saw the lights all alone. In the dark, it takes him about 45 minutes ago to come upon an awful scene: the sheriff's wagon, overturned, a dead horse, and a body face down in the ground, seemingly dead as well. Having kept at a safe distance, he can't quite tell whose body it is, but whoever it was was probably on the wagon's front bench. But before he can decide to get closer for an inspection, his keen eye catches something else - a glint, a bit of movement, about half-way out. He counts nine men (though maybe he just can't count to more than nine?), moving in a very organized fashion, covering each other as they move from cover to cover, attempting to stay stealthy.

The first best thing comes to Cormac's mind is to call out to them from the distance, but perhaps it's something about his voice or his wording, one way or another, his only answer is a hail of gunshots, with two of them whizzing dangerously close past his torso, one even ripping a bit of his jacket. He decides to high-tail it out of there, but not without throwing a few insults at his would-be assailants. In another 45-50 minutes, he makes his way back to Santa Fe, and informs his comrades of the grim happenings... while the posse and locals still wait for the expected attack of the Aces.

The plan falls apart!

As the posse and almost all the able bodied men wait around their devised kill-zone, Isaac spots movement in the West part of the main square, and then Tencount hears somebody's neck getting slit! They have been cheated out of an opportunity to easily spring the trap, and must now venture West to deter the attack!

Given the warnings, the posse moves up the west. Quick orders are given - the "casino squad" to circle around the town to come into the potential enemies' backs, the "saloon squad" to take up covert positions on the western part of the roof, and Bill, Tencount, Ann and Voho take up stealthy positions in the dimly-lit square ready for anything. Isaac is meanwhile instructed to get off the roof on the opposite side of the saloon, taking a stealthy route into the fray...

As everyone takes up positions, they hear a lamentation from the middle of the square. It's Phillip Idrique, the Ace of Spades gang member they've been warned about by the Woman with No Name, and he first fires off two shots to get the whole town's attention.

"Hermanos of Santa Fe! Y'all's done good bein' in y'all's homes tonight! Just stay there, we pick somethin' up from the Sharf's office, and me and the muchachos will roll on out! No need fer this to be a bloodshed!"

The fight starts off with a massive bang. Taking a page out of the Skull's book, Tencount tosses one of his dynamites at an unaware group of bandits nearby, and despite it being a rather inaccurate throw, manages to take out four, and injure one severely. Said group is then finished quickly by Bill, who accompanies Tencount, and whose rifle strikes true, exploding the brains out of the already injured boy.

The remains of the trap are then quickly sprung as the ambushers up on the saloon roof take their pot shots, but in turn, they show their hands - and Idrique quickly picks up on it, warning his gang of the height advantage. A lot of the Aces turn up to climb surrounding roofs, including the leader himself as gunshots ring past, through, and by. On the north side of the main square, Bill gets taken out by a dual-wielding desperado, with two well-aimed shots that bring the mountain man to the brink of death.

Several clever combat maneuvers in, and it's Ann on top of a roof with the Nameless Woman's rifle, ready to wreck some serious havoc with the customized long-barrel, well-rifled weapon. Aided by Voho pushing her up, despite difficulties and shots taken at her, the sharpshooter made it up there and took aim on Indrique, who'd been responding by the dynamite explosion a bit north of the main street... and Ann's new rifle completely misfired, knocking itself out of her hands. She quickly rolled back behind cover and reached for her revolver.

The Aces' boss seemed to have taken quite the interest there and immediately went for the rifle, but missed a shot with it himself. A lot more fire had been exchanged in all other areas, while both Tencount and Voho were sitting back, hoping for an opportunity to strike in melee. Eventually, the situation turned into several duels. With Ann and Tencount brutally focused on taking down Idrique, Voho working hard to remove a female bandit from the equation who had been flanking them, Isaac finally making his way around to he theatre to remove Bill Williamson from it and stabilize him... and finally, in the Sheriff's office, several members of the Aces' gang having a major shootout with the fresh Deputy Jones.

Once Idrique's got a firm grasp on the weapon, he commands his posse for a retreat; and he does so style. The half-mexican man springs off the rooftop he'd been fighting Ann and Tencount on in a backflip and even manages to take a shot while leaping off, and miraculously, he hits Tencount straight in the chest, be it luck or skill, the shot lands right in the middle of the brute's broad chest. But perhaps even more miraculously, the bullet just shatters off; perhaps it'd been a misfire, or Tencount's thick skin, or his heavy clothes, but either way, the acrobatic shot gives him nothing but a bruise.

More shots are exchanged left and right as the combat becomes even more chaotic. A few more of Idrique's men are taken out by some extremely skillful, and extremely lucky shots by both the posse and their civilian backup, which triggers the Mexican leader to go brutally murderous. While Voho is dealing with a duel against a woman gunslinger, tossing a pear, dodging a shot, swinging his knife that she dodges, moving to cover... the pair on the roof look up at each other as a dynamite lands right between them.

"Scorched earth it is, mo'fuckers!!!" Idrique yells, and Tencount works off nothing but instinct. He darts across the roof with the speed and determination of an animal, leaps, and covers Ann's body with a beat hug. The dynamite blows, taking a massive chunk off of the post office, and more importantly... takes Tencount apart. In his last act on this world, the man is blown to literal pieces, covering the roof, and Ann, in blood and guts, but despite his sacrifice, the woman sharpshooter is nearly taken out as well. Thanks almost entirely to Tencount's sacrifice, however, she miraculously survives, though her left arm is blown off its socket, the only part exposed to the shockwave, ripped away from the joint and flying off into the dirt.

In the shock of the explosion - and perhaps guts and bits flying about - Bart, one of the casino guards who were a massive help up until now in the fight, takes a shot at the gunslinger engages with Voho but misses, and accidentally takes out the pale Indian with a shot to the lower back. Fortunately, it misses any vital organs, but be-all end-all, the whole posse except for Isaac who had been taking care of Bill is down, several townsfolk were dead and down... and in the Sheriff's office, Deputy Jones was completely overwhelmed and bleeding out. Finally, Idrique's crew starts backing out, and everyone is surprised to the dedication his comrades have to saving their leader's life as they jump in front of him when shots are taken and give a life or two to save his. As they retreat, Dancing Blades also makes it out, just as the posse's reinforcements, ordered to circle around town to get into the enemy's back line, finally arrive... to find nothing but carnage.

The survivors are stabilized, but the cost is great. While Isaac has stabilized Bill, Voho managed to survive the friendly fire and most of the townfolk who were down were also saved, there were a few bodies to be buried; and worst of all, Tencount Cormac, who had heroically given his life in saving Ann, paying for it with his own body's integrity.

The posse was beaten, badly. Bleeding, missing members, limbs, weapons, and having lost the encounter entirely. The townsfolk turned away from them as they went to bury their own dead... and prayed for Sheriff Weller, whom they now believed was dead as well.

From Heroes of Santa Fe, to those who disappointed it... and with the doctor murdered as well as one of the first kills, no easy way to recovery... the gang had one hell of a job in front of hem, whatever it was.

Once the dust settles and the first sun are just an hour or two away from hitting the bloodied dirt of Santa Fe, the moaning and groans of wounded subsides. The saloon proprietor, Eight-Fingered Jack, volunteers the space for triage and the women of the city who hadn't fled its demise work on rebandaging and cleaning wounds of the injured men to the best of their ability.

Bill and Ann are stabilized despite their serious injuries, thanks in a large part to Isaac's immediate attention on the battlefield. When Ann comes to, she finds... nothing where her left arm used to be, amputated at the shoulder by the dynamite blast. Bill was luckier: while there is massive wound in his right shoulder and his mobility is reduced, there seems to be no permanent damage.

Both characters will suffer -4 to hit for the next 24 in-game hours, and their movement speed is halved. Ann is missing an arm and can only use one-handed weapons from now on, and of course all the in-character limitations that being a one-armed bandit entails.

Voho finds himself with a painful graze on his side, but feels mostly recovered. Just a dull pain where there's a bandage wrapped tightly around his lower abdomen.

Tencount Cormac is, of course, dead, in his valiant sacrifice to keep Ann from being blown to pieces as well, his body could not even be identified for a proper funeral.

The survivors gather around Bill and Ann's beds to confer about what's next for them. The rumor heard around the makeshift hospital is that most citizens of Santa Fe are packing their valuables, their lives, and intend on leaving the city an take the Santa Fe trail to Dodge City. They are all afraid that the weakened city would now be a prime target or another Marauder attempt, and prefer to leave Santa Fe to its fate than to die in it.

Ok bros that might look like a hell of a setback, and it is, but I see some opportunities here.
Way I see it, we have four potential options to follow through.
1. Find out whatever happened to the Sheriff's cart. I recall only one body being seen. There may be a trail to follow here. HOWEVER, we might already be too late, there were other dudes at the spot, and we might end up trailing them, rather than Sheriff etc.
2. The army might be on its way here, though if they run into any Santa Fe emigrants, they might say fuck it and turn around. We might not be able to stay here too long but, we could help these guys take the marauders out, earn some respect back.
3. If, as I pointed out, the army decides not to bother, we could do something about the marauders.-> This is the second worst option I find we have, if only because of the odds against us.
4. Well, there is a vacancy for law and order here. We could do something about that as well.
5. Of course, we could hightail it out of town as well and maybe head to Denver.

I want my rifle back -- even if I can't use it, it's the principle that counts. I can accept a murderer, but not a thief.

And who know's what will happen in the future ~~ maybe when all on level 6, and you're on your 50th Wild Man, Soup will allow a one armed rifle-woman?

That said, I'm curious about the Sheriff, and the people that shot at you. I'd like to know more about them.

Don't really feel like hanging around and becoming a state employee - it sounds a little mundane.

On the matter of one-armed rifles- you only need one arm to pull the trigger.
If we had some sort of brace worked out on which you could rest that rifle- might be feasible. Difficult, but feasible.
In fact, you could potentially hold up the rifle all day long. I mean, the guy holding up the rifle with both hands will eventually tire the arm that is forward and bracing the rifle. Your other arm is in no state to feel fatigue.
If the bracing structure manages to hold on the rifle, you could probably even breech load it one armed.

Something tells me Soup will appreciate this concept much more than a steampunk 1800's Evil Dead arm. Groovy!

yeah you could even stock the powder in your brace/fake arm to make it quicker to load. Until the day you catch fire that is.

Hell we could just buy a camera for 60 dorra, and use the tripod mount as a brace and repurpose the camera to hold and steady the rifle. Could buy a scrap camera for cheaper even.

Didn't this game die? I was crazy with work at one point for like a week or more doing 14 hour shifts, and couldn't join. And I think everyone else just withered away.

Yeah, I'm just screwing around.

I suddenly remembered this old game and felt like looking it up. It'd be nice to see a similar game. Even if I cant be part of it.

Stella Brando I've been wanting to DM a Black Crusade game for a while now.

I call it Shadow of the Blood God. Basically, I have the general aspect of it run out and need to build up game details for the first session or two, see how it plays out. Let me know if you're interested.
