"Sir, I request you lower your voice," he snarled. "If you do not bring the cart back, it'll cost you triple its value. Refuse to pay, and we'll issue a warrant for your arrest. If you flee, we will hunt you down. The choice is entirely yours."

Kilur, surprised that Captain Miller has such a good ear to catch what he was muttering under his breath, just shrugged.

"Keep the damn cart then. Triple the price, pfftt!!"

The dwarf has nothing else to say to the good captain and ready to depart.

No need for a roll. If you want to be liable for the cart, then you can volunteer to do so. You'll just have to agree to the stipulations (unless you have a good counter offer) and fork over the gold, unless other people in the party want to contribute.

Just want to make sure you know it's triple the price if you don't return the cart, not renting it, which is 5GP.

Yeah, I get that.
If the veteran captain is not moved by the thought of transporting the wounded, so be it.
Kilur really cared mostly about comfortable transportation for his dwarven backside (and loot!), as he's not a horse rider.
But what if we get ambushed? The greedy dorf will get a heart attack if an enemy's arrow would scratch the cart's side.
As brand new cart costs 15 gp without any strings attached, we can just pay it upfront and have not a care in the world.

In any case I agree, that's not the thing worth delaying the story.

Brytter considered for a minute. "I wager the halfling could share saddle with one of us, in which case, would you consider loaning us four horses and a cart for the price of six horses? Assuming these terms are not disagreeable to you." This last bit directed towards the smallwoman.

Mardrey's face turned as red as her hair in embarrasment. "I-I would rather have my own horse i-if that's n-not a problem. B-But I do not want to c-cause trouble!"

She hoped that no one would be mad at her and that the negotiations would be over soon so they could leave this stern captain and his constricting little office and depart out into nature.

If we want a cart I also think we should just buy one and forget about renting one for questionable rates from captain tightwad over here

Mumbles, Mardrey, and Kilur are for buying the cart outright. That's a majority, fwiw. If that's the plan, feel free to make an offer.

This is as metagame-y as it gets, but lets get past this hurdle.

Can we agree, that sometime during the tavern meet we all decided that Brytter joins the gang on equal footing with everyone else;
and does not need to second guess if he has a say. The monks said nothing about methods, so this is just a kind of subcontracting.

If no one particularly invested in the stalemate with the cart (and I feel partially responsible for it), can we agree, that we got
the horses from Miller, and Kilur went and bought somewhere a cart with his personal money?
But it will be MY cart! So if ye lot want a ride, ye better set me a mug of beer or something!

Agreed. Beer when Brytter scores some cash.

Just to confirm: You all agree to take the five horses from Capt. Miller, sans cart. Kilur will take a quick trip to the stables and purchase a cart for 15GP?

Nortar, I'm OK with what you proposed about Brytter joining the party. I went under the assumption that Brytter linked up with the group on the way to the tavern, and you all chatted about the mission. The only difference is four of the five people in this group are getting paid by the Brotherhood. Brytter is doing this on his own.

After much back and forth, Brytter, Kilur, Mardrey, the Colonel, and Mumbles decided to take the five horses. Kilur slapped 15 gold pieces onto the table.

Remove 15gp from your inventory. The cart is yours.

Miller took them and stashed them into the coin sack. He filled out some papers and placed to them to the side. He ripped six slips of paper and gave them to Kilur: five green; one pink.

"You are now the proud owner of Fourtower Bridge standard cart," he said. "I've included the necessary equipment for your horse to adequately pull it. If that is all you need from me, one of my guards will take you to the stables, where you can get everything. Roy!"

The guard entered the room.

"Take them to the stables," Miller ordered.

Roy bowed.

"Yes, sir."

The party followed the guard through the winding barracks until they walked through a door and emerged outside the city walls. To their left, they can see a grand stable.

Kilur goes into the stable and obtains the horses and cart without much issue. Mumbles, Brytter and the Colonel received standard sized horses, while Kilur and Mardrey got slightly smaller horses to fit their size. Kilur's horse is strong enough to lug the cart.

The party departed Fourtower Bridge, heading east, into the mountains. There's only one road for a few miles leaving Fourtower Bridge, then it splinters into branching paths along, and through, the mountain range. The party found easy-to-spot signs along the way, and they do not have trouble finding the road that should lead to Brookhaven.

This is what I'm establishing as marching orders, from back to front:

Kilur (dragging the cart) -> Mardrey -> Mumbles -> the Colonel -> Brytter

Please let me know if someone should be positioned somewhere else.

Pink loicense! Noice!
Just so we imagine the cart the same way. Does it have sides high enough to hide behind them (and have cover)?

Kilur comfortably sits on the coachbox, the crossbow is next to him and the backpack lies behind.
When he's not busy counting bumps, the dorf keeps an eye on the road, and makes an idle chatter with the gang if they know anything about Brookhaven.

Sounds good. An armored warwagon with a scorpio mount and spiked wheels. Hell, yeah!
But I guess in addition to bardic inspirashun it would also take an ungodly amount of money.
So perhaps it can wait till after we pillage that monastery and live to split the plunder, hehe.
Seriously though, it would be cool to have a fantasy-style Mad Max inspired adventure. Let me know if you're going to run something like that.

The cart Kilur purchased is a regular one made of wood. It has raised sides, about 3ft. tall. It can hold a good amount of stuff, whether it's bodies or loot. It has a little bench for a driver.

The party continued into the mountains for about three to four hours. The tree-filled peaks rose around them, and the air became slightly colder. The party stayed silent most of the time, keeping an eye around their surroundings, as the horses thumped and the cart creaked.

The sky soon became a dark blue that signaled impending darkness. The road to Brookhaven is still another day's ride or so.

1. Press on?

2. Find a spot off the road, set up camp, and wait for the morning?

I'd like to check if we are being followed, by beast or by man, before we take a call. Putting ears to the ground, maybe climb a tree to see if I spot anything. Also check if wherever we are halting is part of some normal animals hunting grounds.

Kilur was not used to sleeping without a roof above his head.
Perhaps a human would feel something similar going to sleep on the very edge of a bottomless chasm.

"Say, lads and lasses, any of ye know these parts? Is there an inn, or a tavern nearby? Or maybe a camp where travelers usually break for the night?"
The question asked, preferably, before Brytter went off on his recon.

In any case Kilur is not picky, if no one knows about a comfy lodging within 1-2 hours of traveling, and if Brytter won't find anything dangerous, the dorf is more than willing to break camp wherever.

If it's a big deal I suppose I can turn the cart upside down for you to sleep under. Hopefully that shouldn't be too much work.
