"Well... he didn't need to be so dramatic about an easy job for easy pay," Desmond said. He turned to the rest of the group. "My offer still stands, but with one less person here, that means more gold for each of you. Kilur is in. Mumbles? Mardrey
Hmmm, I suppose I might have overreacted a bit.

*Aight, here it is, codex gang. We begin, yo*

Mumbles was a man half orc of many words, rhymes and verses, but this was the time to shut up and take someone else's money, he thought. Today's egg is better than tomorrow's chicken, his mother used to say (they had neither), and if these "calcoolations" were anything to go by, a half-chicken today, (with a prospect of another half joining shortly afterwards), was clearly preferable to slinking off empty-handed. To that end, he struck out his palm in the most suggestive manner available and afforded Reinhold the last of his daily friendly smiles (he had 3 per rest as a rule).

"Chillax, Monk Man, no need for no frontin'. Mumbles gonna go and do your sight-seeing for ya." - he said, nodding towards his would-be companions "aight, crew, we bounce?"

"aight, crew, we bounce?"

Kilur jumped off his chair and slinked crossbow behind shoulders.
"Who made ye the boss?" - the dwarf grumbled to not show that he, in fact, liked that idea. The way half-orc doubled the payment with just a few words, showed it was better to let him do the talking.

"Ye said something about horses?" - Turning to Desmold, Kilur thoughtfully scratched his beard, and a moment later just as thoughtfully - his backside. - "Can ye get us a cart or a wagon too? And aye, before we head to the stables, we better get to know each other, lads and lasses, so how about we hit a tavern first, eh?"

Mardrey doesn't need to think long about it. She looks at a point slightly above Desmond's eyes and replies "Of course I am in! Gold will help me keep Mother safe by buying more means to protect her from harm. Also if there really is unnatural activity going on at the monastery Mother said it's my duty to go there to keep balance in check."

She then eyes Nortar who suggested going to a tavern. Cold sweat is breaking out on her forehead as she replies "A.. A tavern? Like more sitting inside?! M-maybe we can get a table outside if you don't mind and have some goat milk and sourbread to b-break the ice?"

Reinhold did not look the least bit amused. "I think you meant that for Desmond," he said, pointing to him.

Desmond shook his head with a chuckle.

Kilur stood up.

"Ye said something about horses?" he asked. "Can ye get us a cart or a wagon too?"

"Ah, the horses," Desmond said. "That can be arranged. Go to the garrison and find a Captain Jacques Miller. Tell him Desmond said you could take the horses. He'll take you to the stable master.

"As for wagons and a cart, I can't help you there. I can only provide the horses. You could negotiate something with the stable master.

"One thing: These horses are on loan. Nothing, and I mean nothing, can happen to those animals. I am responsible for all of them financially, and if one of them is hurt, I have to pay the cost of all them. This is the price I must pay to have access to top-tier military horses."

Desmond reached into a back near his feet and pulled out a cloth sack. Coins jingled together after he plopped the bag on the table. He reached in and sorted out 50 gold pieces on the table. "Like I said, here's half. You get the rest when you return."

Contrary to popular misbelief, no sane dwarf would refuse to partake in milk and cookies.
Cows don't thrive in mountains, so goats provide all the milk the dwarves have.
Goat milk warmed and mixed with beer is the ever-popular drink for little dorflings.
And cookies, especially the rock-hard hardtacks kind, well, let's just say if bread can't stand a test of time, it's not of dwarven make.

Kilur's nostalgic trip was interrupted by the appearance of the money sack.
So he just nodded enthusiastically to Mardrey's proposition and went on to grab his share of the gold.
After carefully studying each coin and tasting a couple by tooth, he was finally ready to depart.
Just one thought, as if he has forgotten to ask something important, was buzzing in his head like a tiny intrusive fly.

Madrey, Mumbles, the Colonel and Kilur received 10 gold pieces each. You're now under contract with Desmond and The Brotherhood. You know where to go next for the mission: the garrison. Do you have more questions for Desmond or have anything else to say to him and Reinhold?

I'm just saying, if they can't even count their coin, how can you trust them?

who said we are trusting them with anything? It just proves my initial theory that these are gullible snotfaced snobs that like to dabble in politics and best thing we can do is rip them off and vamoos

No, no. ERYFKRAD's right. Everyone gets 10 gold pieces as the advance. Everyone will get 10 more when the job is done.

Kilur remembered what he wanted to ask.
If the monks could write in runes only readable by the few, could they decrypt
the four-rune writing no one could understand? But he decided he can ask that upon return.

How is it usually done? Should we go through the meet and greet part and reunite with Brytter, or just skip to when we all know who is who and go on with the plot?

I'm doing a little retconning to include a sixth person who is replacing Endemic and getting in on the job. They're getting the money later and will meet up with you all.

You all met up at the meeting and don't know each other. A post-meeting huddle to get to know your fellow adventurers would be cool. There will be an additional person joining the party very soon, though.

"Mumbles been to a monastary once" - Mumbles announced, matter-of-factly, as the party headed to the nearest tavern - "My dada and Shaman RZA took me, my lil' bro Snotty (Now they calls him Snotark GrimAxe tho) and some of my homies there. We wus on a school trip. Was nice. We pillaged it and dada said he d shift all the bling off and buy us some axes'n'shit. And he did jus that and then us..." - his monologue was interrupted by a resounding thud as he smacked his head into a rather inconspicuously looking lamp post.

"No other questions?" Desmond asked. "Well, you have your assignment: talk to Capt. Miller about the horses and make your way to Brookhaven. When you're there, my contact will meet you. You'll find them at the tavern and will help you get to the monastery. Investigate what's happening up there. Return here in one piece, and you get the rest of the reward."

With that, Mumbles, the Colonel, Mardrey and Kilur said goodbye to Desmond and Reinhold. They filed, one by one, into the late afternoon. There had been some talk about convening at a tavern, and the party headed that way. Brytter, who waited for the group to leave the store, caught up with them.

There had been some talk about convening at a tavern, and the party headed that way. Brytter, who waited for the group to leave the store, caught up with them.

"Look, that's the big guy, who flipped them monksters off. Ohoho, lad, ye must have adamantine balls! Did ye see the stars and all, eh?" - Kilur lowered his voice to a theatrical whisper - "They were from the Brotherhood!"

"But the look on that Death-mound face when ye walked on him, ha! Let me buy ye a drink for that!"

With money in his pocket and prospects of getting inebriated Kilur was in a good and talkative mood.
"Ye know old Icke, the fishmonger? He swears the Brotherhooders are not people, but lizardmen in disguise! And if ye look real close ye can tell it by their dead eyes! It's like they don't blink and have to remember to do that. Like so! - The dwarf forcefully blinked twice; although his differently sized eyes made him look more like an owl than a reptile. - "And all their big shots even have forked tongues, and whatever they tell ye to do, with those serpent tongues, ye just do! That's why the king is like a puppet on their strings! Old Icke himself had to give all his fish for free once! Ohohoho, what a load of bull!"

Brytter accepted his free drink with thanks. He was perhaps no wiser than the fishmonger as regards this brotherhood so he took the dwarf's words as well as he could- something to look into later, no more.
"Aye, I would not fare well working with such. You all, however- what do say to me giving you a hand with this task. I only ask two things- that I have a fair share of the loot, and more chief- that you let me note the findings and hold them. As I am under no obligation to thus Brotherhood, I am under no requirement to give them information they may harm others with. You would, in no wise, be worse off with an extra blade at hand."
He looks once again at them all, "That said if you would heed my words, we might be better off buying our own mule and carts than relying on loaned ones we must also account for. Have you any skill with animals? Perhaps you could direct them better than the rest of us?" He asks of them all but in particular he directs his query to the smallwoman of a distinctly wild appearance.
