Yes but then I have to put up with Pallegina, no thanks

That spell is seriously OP for its level
The downside is that Fort is typically high save for melee, which is where most bunches are. Made up for by persistent AoE, but if it persists in whiffing not so good. Graze good enough with Blind (one way to manage friend and foe nukes is letting your tank in the middle shrug them off, but hard to shrug off even a short duration Blind, which is what makes Tekehu so good), but I prefer non-Fort Blinds for those sweet long durations.

The spells/abilities that are sleepers (like Fractured Volition) are ones that produce rare effects for their save but apply to a place where that save is likely to be the low one and/or cost no action economy (like Disorienting cone on Hand Mortar).

Do you think Pallegina can be a good tank?
I'd trust Eder way more in this role. Pallegina can have good defenses, but lacks abilities that'd let her control the enemies and make them focus on attacking her.
Thank you. The day I'll have the possibility to react to messages, you'll be one of my first
Haplo is the best there is.

There are ways to enhance engagement as the game goes on, but those come naturally to Fighter.

You definitely have to choose your companions carefully to preserve your sanity. Xoti, for example, can die in a fucking fire.
I like Xoti in my party because what’s the point of making anti religious choices if there’s not someone to watch in horror as I do it.
Torturing her with that still means having to put up with her atrocious accent and garbage writing, though

Maybe if there was a way to tell her to shut the fuck up every time she opened her mouth
Clickthrough is my go to.

In PoE this was probably #1 spell next to paralyzing fireball, in Deadfire I find myself rarely using it.
With low PEN it barely scratches anyone and the blind debuff is too unreliable due to fortitude being the highest defense for 99% of mobs.

Not really my experience. Of course, Pen is often an issue, but I treat the damage as a nice bonus to the CC effect.

Though Grave Calling Paralysing Chilling Fog, that also refills your Focus, is just Chef's Kiss.

That’s where the persistent comes in as in any game, and Deadfire is bullet-spongy enough for it to have time to matter.

Doing this Pillows run and really enjoying figuring out how to suck less with Kana. Three weapon sets and scrolls with High Lore underrated.

I don’t remember getting this much use out of resting bonuses either. Maybe it’s just Barb MC with Durance Staff.

Out of curiousity, what is wrong with Xoti?

These are just playable companions, you do not need to like them, just as you don't need to like every char in a book. I can put myself above all that subjective child play.

The tone of Deadfire is quite different from the first game. More light-hearted, less grim, more colourful in a way. And Xoti is the first new companion you meet, and a cheerful young woman to boot, hence the status of standard of Deadfire's tone.
That's at least how I understand the general disdain for her.

Overwritten

Soyer's trying to throw a bone to the trads and fundies but she's written empathetically instead of sympathetically. Same thing he does in his game design. "Let me imagine being an idiot" instead of "what experiences/hopes/preferences/habits do I share with this character/gamer that I can build on?".

Replaying Pillows seems like Durance is Avellone trying to pushback on Soyer's ham-handedness (Godhammer is nuke killing Christ) by going over the top.

You can see it sort of worked by Soyer's approach in Deadfire but not enough because Avellone got cock-blocked by Soyer's fat "friends" who'd rather keep him mediocre.

She... doesn't fit the serious, pious, scholarly cleric... or disciplined, ascetic monk archetypes?

She's a cheerful, energetic, young redneck girl, who speaks funny and will enthusiastically hop into the main character's bedroll.

Most of PoE companions were rather grounded and believable. In Deadfire everyone received the california millenial treatment, i.e. is insufferable, either by being 'quirky', smug, retarded etc. Everyone is modern and cartoonish as fuck, this is the main problem.

"Overwritten" describes Durance as well (and Grieving Mother).

The Grieving Mother was boring and annoying from the first moment. Never even thought of adding her to the party.

Durance, on the contrary, was the one I liked the most (with Kana Rua). The there was Aloth.

Yes that's absolutely right, I hate her because she's cheerful and a young woman

Brilliant deduction

Did you really not get the point or was the temptation to drop a shitty one-liner so difficult to resist you merely pretend not to ?

Californication

Many such cases. There’s some of that, but when you’re coming from a game that opens with an Abortion Tree maybe it’s a welcome change if not overdone.

She serves as conveniently naive foil to Soyer’s knowing (Gnostic) skepticism, but Soyer doesn’t even know his own traditions so undermines the plot he carefully constructed.

Evil playthroughs are allowed but good ones are beyond the pale. If he had any balls he’d let her jump in the sack with Eder to rekindle his faith (chastened to be sure with a Gaunite humility) by giving Bearn some little brothers.

Simpler explanation would be that pirate game inherently calls for more colorful cast of characters than grim and sombre squad from the first game.

Again, I have no problem with colourful characters. It's not the issue at all. I took Tekehu with me on my last run FFS.

Xoti is just insufferable as Piotrovitz says
