Big patch later today, with some features I like very much.

Updated Melee Combat:
  • Melee weapons and attacks now have 80% bonus shield penetration, up from 50%.
  • Increased the base damage of all melee attacks.
  • Nanopulse melee weapons were given a smaller damage boost than other melee weapons.
  • Melee attacks now benefit from Weapon Proficiency, but receive a smaller bonus from Combat Specialist.
    • The maximum total bonus is still the same as before.
    • Unarmed combat still does not benefit from Weapon Proficiency.
  • Rebalanced the damage values of some specific melee attacks to help equalize the value of different melee weapon types.

Some Borg about to get their ass kicked.

This is the one we all should slobber over tho:

  • Each boost will provide you with a 20% bonus on your Fleet Marks, up to a total of 100 Fleet Marks earned.
    • A minimum of 1 will be awarded in cases where fractions would result.
  • The price per boost is 15,000 Fleet Credits.
    • 5,000 of which you'll make back by donating the bonus Fleet Marks!

Also, those "Tholian Lockboxes". Valuable to someone else in any way, or worthless trash clogging inventory space?

That's something I'm wondering as well, since they basically cost $1.25 in "real" money to open each one. I've only been playing for a week and I've already got almost 100 of these things.

Also...anyone have any pointers on the best way to collect more DOFFs, outside of buying them on the Exchange or sending lots of money to Cryptic for DOFF packs? I've been looking at the fleet projects that Vaarna has going, trying to see where I can contribute, and I've noticed almost all of them need DOFFs.

Tholian Lockboxes are gambling, plain and simple. You might get lucky and get a Tholian ship, which you can use or sell for big bucks on the Exchange. Most likely you'll get crap or something you could just buy with credits from the Exchange (due to the high demand for the Tholian ships, the prices on the Subspace Jumper consoles and other cool stuff are around 1 mil now). Generally you need to think in terms of Master Keys, since those are what sets the Zen:Credits ratios in the game (last time I checked 125 Zen Master Key is 1.7 million credits). So, generally just scrap the boxes.

As for DOFFs, here's how it goes:

1) The classic method is to go to Starfleet Academy and take the Recruitment assignments there. These have a ~3 day cooldown (IRL time like all doff things). The main NPC for this is the Personnel Officer, who is on the other end of the booth with catman (the Commendation contact) in the small circular building on the upper edge of the map. She will give you 5 assignments, one for a Junion Duty Officer Pack, and four that give 2 doffs in the dual category (Tactical, Engineering, Science and Civilian) the assignment covers. In addition to the Personnel Officer, there are three Cultural Exchange contacts around the Academy who give a random doff of a specific species: Andorian, Tellarite (these two are arguing behind the circular building) and Vulcan (she's found at the central park).

All four NPCs can provide Reassignment, with the Cultural Exchange contacts giving only doffs of their species in return.

2) Earn Fleet Marks and use them to contribute to the Starbase. This is the fastest way to get Fleet Credits, but you can also buy commodities from vendors (list in the wiki, they all sell the commodities for half the replicator price) and contribute Dilithium (and doffs). When you have enough Fleet Credits, you can buy doffs at the Starbase (currently you can buy random white and green quality doffs, and random white quality Engineering/Operations doffs), with prices starting at 500 Fleet Credits.

The Exchange comes in for selling and buying high caliber purple doffs you either need or don't need. Normally your primary source of Purple doffs without dilithium is to complete assignment chain, specifically Colonization chains (completion gives specific Blue doff, critical success in the repeated Support Colonization Efforts assignment unlocked afterwards gives a specific Purple doff that can be acquired multiple times).

Achtung!

Using the Fleet doff vendor for contributions just got more complicated with today's patch. There's some misconceptions floating around teh internets about this, so I'll explain the situation. This was not in the patch notes, but from now on you cannot contribute doffs bought from the Fleet vendor directly. Instead you'll have to first go to the Academy and have the personnel officer there reassign them so they become normal doffs, which in turn can be contributed. This makes the process more expensive, and a pain in the ass to do since you have to run between Sol and Starbase to do it. But the doffs are NOT worthless, and I just used them to fill out Comm Array needs.

Just finished grinding my way through Captain, because I hate all of the Tier 4 ships and I wanted to be done with them as quickly as possible. So I made Rear Admiral last night and bought myself a present:

USS_Enterprise-B_in_drydock.jpg

:yeah:

I'm a bit burned out on episode missions at the moment, since I've now got a ship I think I'll be happy with for a while I think I'll spend some time working on the Starbase.

Few tips on making the most of the Excelsior:

1) Get yourself two Purple (or one Purple and one Blue) quality Conn Officer doffs with the speciality to reduce cooldown on Tactical Team. This way you need only one Tactical Team.
2) With this, you free up room to get Beam: Overload 3 and most likely Beam: Fire At Will 2. Use a Hargh'peng and Quantum torpedo to supplement your six beams.
3) Set up your other Engineer with Emergency Power To Shields 1, Reverse Shield Polarity 1, Eject Warp Plasma 1, and Reverse Shield Polarity 3.
4) The secondary Engineer with Emergency Power To Shields 1, Auxiliary Power To Structural Integrity Field 1. Final Engineer with Engineering Team 1 (don't expect to use this guy much).
5) Science dude gets Hazard Emitters 1 and Transfer Shield Strength 2.

As for consoles, only one thing to remember really: You should put in 3 energy type damage boosters (I assume Phaser Relays) to Tactical slots.

PS: The Transwarp Computer is not very good. You can toss it to your bank when you have a good replacement for it in all slots.

Thanks for the pointers, Vaarna, especially about those conn officer doffs. I looked up a few Excelsior retrofit build threads on the STO forum and I'm working on a setup very similar to what you've recommended. I went with Tetryon weapons this time just for a change of pace. I think Cryptic has made some changes to the Transwarp computer. It doesn't seem to be a console any longer, and rather is an intrinsic part of the ship. I initially panicked, thinking I had somehow discarded the transwarp console when I was dumping all the standard crap equipment that a new ship comes with. There isn't any transwarp console equipped, but yet I still have full transwarp capability on this ship, beyond the Sol and Fleet Starbase destinations that I always had.

The old console which WAS awesome is integrated into the ship. The Transwarp Computer is a different thing, and pretty crap. I seem to have forgotten and it's actually a console on the Advanced Heavy Cruiser Refit, the Commander tier ship.

Like I said, you all have the rights to invite new members and promote them to a point where they have bank and starbase access. Most of you have admin rights to the chat channel too.

Anyone interested in a free mirror assault cruiser? I've been doing some Tholian lockbox gambling and won two of these pretty much back-to-back. Same specs as the standard assault cruiser, but uses the star cruiser skin and you can choose to use the mirror universe camo paint scheme if you want. Because nothing makes more sense than camo on a starship!

they sell for like 3-400k on the exchange so make sure you can spare the energy credits, but yeah, i'd love one if you're giving them away. Just make sure first though.

Have we got any yanks in guild or on the forums playing this?
I'm one, though I haven't been STOing much lately.
Well do get back in when you've got the time bro, we're about to start working on the first T3 process on the Starbase. Needs to be decided if it'll be Tactical (more Fleet ships to select from), Engineering (Elite Fleet Ground Weapons) or Science (Transwarp Conduit III).

Transwarp sounds handy for us welfare queens whom don't have 30k dil to spare.

Keep in mind though that a Transwarp Conduit upgrade costs Dil. You can check the benefits scheme here:

http://www.stowiki.org/Fleet_starbase

Science and Engineering are the first choices due to how high we have those already.

Also bros, start scrounging up your purple doff production again. We're going to need 15 Purple Civilians for the tailor (otherwise the reqs for that are fairly mild, anyone of our high-rollers should be able to go to Risa or DS9 and buy 2500 Entertainment Provisions).

Anyway bros, just so you know the T3 upgrades are probably going to be the farthest we can make it quickly. The reason is that the next tier is at 100k XP for each category, and our maximum feasible daily output is 1000 XP in one category and 500 XP in another (the 1000 XP projects have large green doff costs, good news is that white quality doff costs will be irrelevant due to us being able to buy doffs of specific category combo by then). We should probably get the KDF fleet done before we try to get T4 Starbase for Feds.

EDIT: Disregard that, I just realized we can buy Green doffs in those specific category combos too by then (option unlocks at T3 of the category, quite handy).

Hai peoples!

Reporting in for slacking off duty. Someone has to do it.

Been looking through this board before but never really thought about posting before I somehow got mixed up in the fleet.

What ships are you all currently flying, and what have been your favorites? My main ship continues to be the Excelsior retrofit I picked up a couple weeks ago, configured as a dps cruiser. It's able to hang in a firefight much longer than the escorts I was previously flying, though I'm sure I'll give the advanced escort I got when I ranked up a test drive soon. I'd definitely be interested in reading any opinions you all have on the Odyssey, Regent or Armitage carrier.

Depends what you use it for. If you last longer in a firefight in a cruiser than an escort, you're doing it wrong, especially in PvP. Escorts will slice through a cruiser like it's made of cardboard. Actually the survivability of an escort is slightly less than a cruiser (if both have proper boff allocation etc) but a cruiser has nowhere near enough firepower to destroy your opponent before they take you out, in fact you probably won't even get one shield of an escort down before you're toast. For some STF's and such the cruiser works better though, for example infected space or starbase blockade, the cruiser does work better. For those the Odyssey is brilliant. The engineering abilities and 360 degree firing arc are more important in those than sheer firepower, and in fact firing scatter volleys all over the place can have disastrous consequences. My human engineer flies a Tactical Odyssey which has +10 to weapons power and docks a teeny little Aquarius Escort that does a little extra damage, good for Borg STFs. But for sheer damage, nothing comes close to an escort, it's kind of a joke how overpowered these things are in the game.
