Finished downloading it a while ago and ran into a problem with the Cryptic Autoupdater. It's apparently common enough that a lot of people have been asking about it in the forums as far back as September but (surprise) there's been no response from whoever's in charge. So users came up with a solution for it.

The problem is an autoupdater error "the patchclient got a message while it was in a state of no response function", which in turn will get you nowhere. Repeatedly. If this happens to you, head on to http://www.ausmonauts.com/fix/ and replace your STO.exe with the one there. Worked for me, at least.

Sheeeeeeeeit. It sounded too good to be true because it apparently is. Found this:

Just FYI, your inventory does not expand as you level. You have to buy additional inventory space. Also, you *can* buy anything if you save up your dilithium, but keep in mind that you can convert 8,000 dilithium per day, and it costs about 480,000 to buy enough C-Points for a single ship that costs 1600 C-Points (@ roughly 300 dilithium per C-Point on the Dilithium Exchange as of 1/17/12). That averages out to ridiculous.
So dilithium is your currency effectively, and since you don't LEWT PHAT PURP SHIPZ you have to buy new ships, and that means you'd have to play daily for two months to "Refine" enough to get a new ship. If you didn't buy anything else during that time, like upgrades. Assuming you can lewt phat purp phaz0rz.

I dunno bros. I DUNNO.

Should've known it was too good to be true. Even then, it's laggy like shit so unplayable for me anyway.

I'm already playing CO and SWTOR, so I'll need a few guys in before I really commit to STO. I really hope we get enough players though. I want to continue the adventures of Captain Anus and her officers - Kraze, SMA and Kaiserin.

I've barely gotten out of the tutorial so far. Ground combat seems faster than most MMOs but still very MMO-esque. Space combat seems kinda cool with positional shields and weapons. It does appear you'll get access to new ships as you rank up for non-crazy amounts of dilithium, so it's possible that the ships past that are mostly cosmetic. Possibly. I'll definitely keep dicking with it, CAPTAIN DELBERT BARNEY TIPPENS OF THE U.S.S. AVELLONE HAS GREAT ADVENTURES AHEAD OF HIM. A shame I didn't get a good picture of his giant gut.

Edit: Oh yeah. Only done two non-tutorial quests so far. They've both involved combat, but one appeared to have skill checks (Engineering dude could do something to a warp core that was gonna blow up, and science officer could save a radiation poisoned dude) and the other had a vaguely neat space battle. Enemy ship is way stronger than you, so you phone Starfleet for help and have to divert full power to shields and survive 2 minutes against the enemy ship, using your phasers to try your best to shoot down enemy torpedoes. Ended up getting beat to hell down to 30% or so hull before 5-odd ships jumped in and we gangbanged the enemy in a nice battle.

Played a buuuuuuuuuunch of this today. Only found one source of dilithium, which was apparently a daily quest for going off and doing those randomized EXPLORE STRANGE NEW WORLDS missions/events. You level pretty slowly if you're doing anything BUT the "Episode" missions, but the episode missions seem quite a bit better than everything else for the most part, so eh. Mostly enjoying myself. Not much of a Star Trek fan by any stretch of the imagination, but it is sorta fun. Does seem like there's a ridiculous amount of shit they're trying to sell for cash, though. Even ships, uniforms, and goddamn ship interiors which as far as I can tell are entirely cosmetic and can only be seen if you specifically go HEY I WANNA WALK AROUND MY SHIP.

Unfortunately it's not doing what it was supposed to, which was be so god damn terrible that it removed all urge to dick with the Old Republic. If anything it's getting me in to MMO mood.

Beginning to get interested in this too. I'll download and start running through the obligatory hoops.

Looking at the 'Features Matrix', F2P players get...

-one less character slot
-one less bridge officer slot per level up (normally 2)
-42 inventory spaces instead of 72
-48 bank inventory instead of 108
-Miss out on the free respec token
-Foundry Creator has to be unlocked (dilithium)
-Foundry Project slots have to be unlocked (dilithium)
-Voice chat is ad-supported
-'Limited' customer service
-Limits to in-game chat, in-game mail and Forums access. Goes away if you've ever had a subscription, or once you spent 20 hours playing (most of it's only talking to friends, but if we're doing the Fleet thing I don't see why it matters)
-Looks like someone with that 20 hour requirement already met will have to be the one who sets up the guild.

Edit: Oh, and a 10 million energy credit cap instead of 1 Billion. Doubt that'll be a factor for awhile.

Because I'm a rich bastard, I might also actually sub for a while if it's good (I do likes me some Star Trek), so I can set up the Fleet here as well.

I got bored after the Azura mission yesterday honestly. Maybe the level 11 ship will be cool. Since I can then get an Escort as a Tac, instead of using a Cruiser, right? How long does it take to get to 11?

I'll consider. What are the differences between free and subscriber? Are Vulcans free?
Vulcans and all aliens are free. Gotta hit level 25 to play klingon faction, but you can play pretty much anything for federation.

Probably not long. Those episode missions seem to give you a level every time you do one. I also read your captain's class doesn't impact your ship selection as you level up. Tac can get a cruiser, which I'm thinking of doing since it sounds heavy and fat which I think I'd prefer to speed of escort.
