On a more serious note, it's pretty fun to have radio silence from Chris since the wonderful announcement.
No wonder MCA was getting drunk the other night. He knew this was coming.

Edit:
so still no word on the 2nd kickstarter?
I'm sticking to my belief that we won't see this for a few months yet, despite what Feargus might have said. It doesn't make much sense to announce it now, when all their best (cRPG) devs are tied up with finishing PoE. Pre-production is a pretty critical phase for an RPG, so they'll want their best devs working on it. Plus there's always the name recognition factor.

No, I expect we won't see anything about the new kickstarter until July or August at the earliest, when the PoE media buzz is starting to ramp up. It would be ideal to announce it around that time, when PoE is in beta and (hopefully) positive feedback is circulating around from that, in addition to whatever marketing Paradox has planned. Launching the kickstarter then will get them a bunch of interviews about it, which they can leverage to futher market PoE and generate interest for the new game as well. Plus they'll be able to say they delivered PoE on time and point to beta feedback to show how awesome of a game it is (again, hopefully). A perfect storm of hype to generate revenue for the new game.

Maybe after South Park and this new World of Tanks gets them quite a few dollars, Obsidian will abandon CRPGs forever until the sequel to Pillars of Eternity comes in with some updated design tenets 15 years from now. The fanboys will suffer the same fate as Blizzard fanboys after WoW.

Obsidian making a tank MMO?

How... disappointing.

Me, I just like flinging shit at Obsidian.

In the end, those who should be really butthurt are the people who respect Obsidian.

I'm not really butthurt. I know why they did it and have nothing against them expanding their horizon. I can also live another 1-2 years without a popamole AAARPGEEEEEEEEE.

Also, having THIS as a project allows nearly all the CRPG pro's at Obsidian to work on Pillars. If this was a different project this wouldn't be the case at all.

So, I'm more than ok and I enjoy the butthurt it generates.

Don't get me wrong, though. If Pillars of Eternity wasn't a reality I would be searching for rain to dramatically break down with teary eyes.

I actually want to stress that.

If this would have been a AAARPG projects some of Obsidian's rpg specialists would be working on whatever it would be.

This exisiting = A better Pillars of Eternity

(Arguably)

Stuff like this is why it makes me laugh when people say things like "well I doubt Obsidian would want to work for Bethesda again after getting shafted on Metacritic" or "hmph, as if they'd make another Star Wars game". What Obsidian wants doesn't matter, Obsidian takes whatever paying work it can get or it closes down.

One thing is certain, if I were to fund a new game development studio, Obsidian would be a case study of what not to do.

Obsidian survived for over 10 years in the marketplace without having sold themselves to a publisher and developing mostly similiar types of games.

You might want to rethink that.

InXile needed a project already hooked out before Wasteland 2 being finished or have some serious problems. I don't think that with the Paradox deal and the tanks comming to rescue Obsidian, they desperately need to announce another kickstarter right now. Actually, recently, Paradox with Runemaster announced that it is branching to low budget RPGs. If this Paradox deal was just a distribution deal, Obsidian and Paradox wouldn't announce it with such fanfare. This deal and the Paradox announcement that it will make RPGs means that or Paradox will fully fund RPGs like Project Eternity or partially fund them as complement for kickstarter money (and if you are more cynical, profit on a low risk enviroment caused by easy kickstarter money using Obsidian name).

This means that Obsidian main studios will do anything it can get it's hands on to keep itself alive, while only a small group will continue making RPGs as Feargus pratically admitted that Obsidian lost to the competition on the AAA market. We can see three things from Obsidian in the future:1) Lots and lots of DLC, 2) Big budget shovelware, 3)Kickstarter or/and Paradox published games (Obsidian GoG fags will commit seppuku for this). Well, I'm pretty sure that Obsidian fans are so desperate with this that they are going to give donations out of pity.

And they are making a cheap looking World of Tanks clone for russian mobster to survive after making a South Park RPG, that sound like success to you?

Yes, they've survived even better than Biowhore.

It's just pretty disappointing if this tendency is the future of Obsidians precense on the AAA/Publisher funded market. I have always been able to at least enjoy their previous publisher funded games, but South Park was stretching it quite a bit for me. And now this. Please just get a D&D licensing deal or something. I don't care if it's as bad as NWN2 on release, everything is forgiven ;_;

Nope, the doctors decided to get a lot of money and got almost 1 billion dollars from EA. They killed Biowhore by their own will and got filthy rich in the process, I think that is a big success, FOR THEM at least.

I wish I could glimpse into an alternate reality where Kickstarter for video game projects never took off, so I could laugh at Obsidian circling the drain.

If not for PoE, this would be Feargus Urquhart's Tim Cain moment. :)
