It will also have offline mode on release but probably no access to "two petabytes of data," I guess.

As the trailer above demonstrates, the new Flight Simulator looks absolutely astounding. Real-world locations including Dubai, San Francisco, and Egypt are recreated in photorealistic 4K resolution, with geography and textures captured from satellite imagery. Players will be able to control numerous authentic planes from light aircrafts to passenger vehicles, set their own flight paths, and navigate through unpredictable scenarios thrown up by Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing platform, which leverages artificial intelligence and machine learning to dynamically shift flight conditions. This will keep players on their toes – get too comfortable running a commuter flight, and Azure might throw up sudden shifts in the weather, turning a sunny flight into a battle to keep aloft as storm conditions roll in.

Spencer first saw footage of Flight Simulator in “probably February or March”, and was so taken aback that he had to confirm with Microsoft’s studios head Shannon Loftis that it was actually real. “There were scenes that look better than photorealistic,” he recalls.

If Flight Simulator looks ahead of its time, that’s because, in many ways, it is. Not only do the underlying AI and graphical technologies behind its creation push current gaming technology to its limits, but they begin to surpass them. The geographic data alone, needed to render the world players will be flying around, comes in at two petabytes – equivalent to 20,000 Blu-ray discs.

It will be far in excess of what can fit on a disc or be reasonably downloaded, and so Flight Simulator is at the vanguard of a new breed of game that can only live, perhaps fittingly, in the cloud. Microsoft servers will do a lot of the visual processing remotely and beam the results to a player’s screen, doing away with the need for a super-powerful PC at home (though you will need a fast internet connection). This is part of a wider shift that is already under way in video games: as technology improves and developers strive to create ever more realistic virtual worlds, games balloon in size, and the hardware needed to run them becomes more and more expensive. Offloading some of that data and processing to cloud servers is the solution that Microsoft – among other companies, such as Google – is betting on.

For games like Flight Simulator, the cloud provides “a system that kind of understands how much capability I need at any point,” Spencer explains. “It’s no different than what we’ve done in years past, streaming into available RAM that’s available on our consoles.” Flight Simulator will have an offline mode when it launches in 2020, but given how heavily it relies on data streamed from Microsoft servers, it’s likely to be severely truncated.

Always-online games are sometimes controversial – not everyone likes logging into a server every time they want to play (and indeed, some players aren’t able to). But in this case, the advantages are surely worth it. “We’re getting to the point with games where there’s the [question of] how much data can you actually download and store?” says Spencer. “[But] there’s also the matter of how much data do I need to have locally at any time? I’m not playing the beginning, middle and end of every game at every time … Not only do we have two petabytes of data behind [Flight Simulator], but we’ve got Azure AI running [so] you have different levels of fidelity in different parts of the planet. As you’re flying around, you’re seeing the highest buildings and the weather’s changing in real time. It is just unreal.”

Ahead of Flight Simulator’s release in 2020, Microsoft has launched an Insider program, to share development updates with players and provide early access to the game in return for feedback from early adopters. Flight Simulator’s approaching return will be watched closely by its many passionate fans – but if Microsoft can stick the landing, this will be a game beyond the wildest dreams of anyone who played in the 80s and 90s.

Heading into the last week of July the team is excitedly awaiting the arrival of August. There are a number of big updates planned for August and September starting with the V1 release of the Development Roadmap.

Within the next few weeks we’ll be providing the official release date for the Development Roadmap, in the meantime, we’d like to share a few of the deliverables from this plan:

The team is excited to move into the next phase of communication with the community regarding our development plans. As we mentioned in our July 25thupdate, August is about setting expectations regarding our development process through launch. September is about defining how we will involve the community in that process.

Here is our current schedule for August:
  • AUGUST 15th – Insider Program Kickoff (preview of Development Roadmap Release)
  • AUGUST 22nd – Development Roadmap Release (General Release)
  • AUGUST 29th – Build Program Kickoff

One of the most important topics we see being discussed in the community is WHEN we plan to start talking about the project. You want the information, the team wants to share this information, so where exactly IS the information? It’s coming. The challenge with creating a transparent development process built on collaboration is that we have to work on the foundation for delivering that information before doing so. With that said, we will be kicking off our Feature Exploration Series in the fall where we will be working closely with the community to walk-through the next iteration of Microsoft Flight Simulator in granular detail.

But wait there’s more!

That said, because we understand the importance of this topic to the community, the team is working hard to adjust the schedule to see what information we can share earlier than currently planned. In our August 15th update, we will provide more clarity on where we at in the process.

It surprises me how good the graphics are, because their last couple of flight sims looked like shit. I really hope they can do something with the gameplay though. I think the number of people who are content with just flying around, is quite limited. I know the Euro/US Truck game is going from strength to strength but I think trucking is weirdly more popular than flying, and also that game apparently has some decent gameplay with letting you make money from deliveries or whatever. I think this game will likely have something similar.

At last ! Perfect solution for me, end of filling TBs of hard disks with photosceneries and stuff. I only hope for some kind of built in Virtual Airline like FS Economy or Air Hauler in game.
It will create photosceneries on the fly along with height map and store it on your hd when you want them or autoclear hd if you don't need them, more of photoscenery stream than clunking your drives. PERFECT
Such a comfort after downloading thousands of sceneries with addons and mods plus payware airports area for X-Plane 11.

What is the Microsoft Flight Simulator Insider Program?

The Insider program is the way Microsoft Flight Simulator fans and community members can collaborate with our development teams to improve the simulation, experience, and services. As an Insider, you will have the opportunity to provide feedback and insights that help shape and inform current franchise initiatives and the future of Microsoft Flight Simulator.



What are the benefits of joining the Insider Program?

Insiders will answer short surveys, have access to private forums and receive exclusive weekly newsletters. Moreover, Insiders will have exclusive opportunities to participate in Technical Alpha and Beta tests of in-progress Microsoft Flight Simulator releases and provide feedback to the development teams.



What is a Preview Build (Technical Alpha/Beta)?

Preview builds are work-in-progress builds we’ve created for the purpose of working directly with our community to deliver the best experience collaboratively through feedback/suggestions. Each build will have a specific set of content/functionality meant to provide a slice of the overall experience. These builds will be time gated and limited to a specific number of Insiders. Participants in these builds will vary with each release so if you are not selected for one, that does not mean you will be excluded from others. As with all Preview builds, we expect some turbulence along the way but we are committed to doing our best to ensure we get you into smoother air, as quickly as possible. We view Preview Build participation is a critical step in our path to building the next generation of Microsoft Flight Simulator and look forward to working closely with you!



Does becoming an Insider guarantee I will participate in the Preview Build Program?

Our goal is ensure that everyone participates in the Preview Program. But that doesn’t mean everyone will participate in every build of the Preview Build Program.

Each build will have a unique set of goals and areas of focus for the development team. To achieve our goals and objectives per build, we will target specific Insiders who may align with those goals for that specific build. Since the Microsoft Flight Simulator Insider program requires participants to share personal information and we are committed to protecting players’ privacy, applicants must be over 18 in order to give legal consent to the capture and storage of this information.

I've never played the old MS Flight Simulator, but I know it didn't have combat planes. I've always wondered what did people do in it then - cargo flights, where they had to deliver cargo at airports? What was the gameplay like?

In old years there was Microsoft Combat FSim , with normal missions etc.
Later there was long nothing until Prepar3d and X-Plane hit the sky. But trust me hundreds of types of civil airplanes/copters etc. m both historic, modern, or like for X-plane 11 even military , in official addons or as hundreds of types in mods are fuck of fun. As general now you have 2 warplanes titles you can count: one is online RIse of Flight with WWI planes, and second is boring as fuck DSC with dozen of paid aeroplanes including this one fucker:
with real good and voiced AI as second pilot [RIO - radar operator].

But it has rather low attraction for singleplayer as it has non dynamic campaign. Anyway i can wholeheartly recommend it's above F-14 addon as it simply break your head, and it's game of its own.
But when you want train modern military planes there is no match for it. It's party for big boys man, so push pedal for the metal and become real fucke for playin it.

Or IL2 series for WWII.

Generally in present Times with legends like Microprose long dead and only F16 Falcon with mods like BMS are res of its empire. There is no much for military pilot.

As for civil sims:
Now we have vast universe of features besides simple flying - like Air Hauler 2 for MFS , FS Economy, vast choose of many virtual airlines and similar programs, you can try SimBuddy where you can lead and track your own Virtual airline, managing office, Staff, airplanes, and even passengers INFLIGHT [hell yeas, nothing serves better than serving Martini when belts are unfast , when Boeing 737 diving ] and routes its fuck tons of fun man try [its for MFS, X-plane 11 /10 , Prepar3d ] : https://www.simbuddy.com/

And what is revolutionary in MS FLIGHT SIM 2020 it's phototextures streamin inflight without need to pack TB's of HD data on your pc. Yes , you can land your plane anyplace in the real world and see it as it exist . So ie. land your Cessna Grand Caravan near your grandpa house etc.

I've never played the old MS Flight Simulator, but I know it didn't have combat planes. I've always wondered what did people do in it then - cargo flights, where they had to deliver cargo at airports? What was the gameplay like?
It is literally just flying around completely aimlessly :( Or it was. People had to make their own goals, like take a business plane like a Learjet and say ok I am going to fly from Chicago to NYC, and you would do the whole thing, start in a hanger and press for air traffic control, taxi to the correct runway, and fly to NYC, takes you 2 hours or whatever as it would in real life. Basically it was for nerds. But it was a big game so some scope to try goofy shit, like there was an aircraft carrier so you could try carrier landings. Also there was a barn out in some rural place so you could pick a small plane and try to fly through it and come out the other side. Then you could load up a huge airliner and try it and then see as your wings get ripped off and you crash. For me I got bored of this after 30 minutes, for a lot of people they could play it for thousands of hours.

In the last few games they added the ability to turn on random mechanical failures like the wheels wont come down or an engine would fail or whatever and you gotta follow the procedures for that failure. And in the last 1 or 2 games they added some missions, but they were crappy and mostly just involved flying from a to b.

I am amazed by the graphics in this though, closest I've ever seen to a photorealistic game. In the past few games they had cities with one or two key landmarks that looked mostly accurate, and then everything else looked like crap. So you go to Seattle, you see the spike tower thing, but all the buildings around it look like cardboard boxes and the grass looks like MS Paint. Then you go to Vegas and there are a few buildings that vaguely resemble the strip. You could go to your own home town and fly around it and the lay of the land was accurate, but it just looked like ass. But this game seems like it might let you see parts of the world in a realistic way. Also if it is realistic enough, just flying around a bustling city would be fun, for a while at least. It only sucked in previous games because there was hardly any traffic and flying low was 1fps.

There is scope for fun though. For example one of the MS Flight Sim games in the 90s had an addon pack that let you make your own planes. But it wasn't strict, so you could build a tiny plane and then put the engine from Concorde or something on it so you sit on the runway, ram the throttle to full, and you take off like a missile. I made a plane with massive wings that could almost stop mid air, and I tried to land it on top of sky scrapers. I also took my super fast missile plane and tried to catch an airliner that was actually just scenery following waypoints and would travel at about 5000mph so no matter what I did, I could never keep up. But I had fun tweaking my plane to get faster and faster so I could try to catch that thing. But without an addon like that, and without the mind of a 9 year old, I think it has limited fun for most people who aren't wannabe pilots. Unless they add some sort of other gameplay this time.

I've tried playing Il2 Sturmovik long ago, and I even got pretty good at landing an F4F on a moving carrier, and flying a P-51. I started reading planes' manuals and basics of flight. I could never decide if I can devote all the time to master it, so I never got a stick :)

I've watched documentaries on Discovery about people doing cargo deliveries with small planes in Canada and the US, and it seems like work that could require lots of skill and be really interesting, because of all the things that could go wrong with the plane, the flight, the weather, but I doubt it can be translated into a game in such a way that would make it as realistic.

I've watched documentaries on Discovery about people doing cargo deliveries with small planes in Canada and the US, and it seems like work that could require lots of skill and be really interesting, because of all the things that could go wrong with the plane, the flight, the weather, but I doubt it can be translated into a game in such a way that would make it as realistic.

Bushflying can be pretty fun, but from a gameplay perspective, it gets a bit samey. You really have to have a deep love of flight and aviation to get long term value from the game. It's not like, for example, Kerbal Space Program, where you get to build an aircraft from scratch and try to come up with mission ideas. There is an entire ecosystem of third party developers for both major sims out right now (X-Plane & FSX/Prepar3D) for addons like sceneries, aircraft, utilities, etc. Both payware and freeware are available. There is online flying with air traffic control and real people serving as controllers if that's your thing. There are also virtual airlines you can join, which gives you various flights you can do.

The problem with civilian flight sims is that the bulk of the journey is godawful boring if you're doing long haul. No one except serious Flight Sim neckbeards wants to sit in front of a screen for 8 hours, and what's the point of setting autopilot and fucking off somewhere away from the computer?

But like I said, bushflying can be fun and is probably the best mode of playing for near constant engagement. You've got to watch out for weather, and depending on the topography of the area, you'll have to thread through mountains. Some of the runways in the more remote locations are dirt strips barely long enough to support a Cessna, and if you're using X-Plane, you have the added bonus of sloped runways to deal with.

I think it will be a mix of both but I would guess all the freeways are animated. The video reeeee's at a lot of graphics aspects but I think even he would admit that it is an amazing looking game, visually at least. I also think there is no way to improve on the graphics at this time with a game that big. If it was just a few cities then they could have it look exactly like real life, but they are basically mapping the entire planet. You can fly over a desert in Africa, the pyramids in Egypt, London, Paris, Australia, any city in America, etc. Some corner cutting has gotta be excusable for that, especially when the end result is still so good.

My only concern is the gameplay. Even flying is boring if there isn't some good context or something.

I thought this was called a spin, not a stall. Off the top of my head a stall was when the forces keeping you in the air and moving in a certain direction become equal or at least very nearly equal to the forces pulling you towards the ground and preventing you from moving in that direction.
