Meifumado is an action role-playing game set in a post-apocalyptic, immersive open world inspired by Japan. It features an in-depth combat system and puts heavy focus on RPG elements, allowing player to change the course of the story and its ending depending on the choices you make throughout the game.

Faction you choose to side with, role you play in local conflicts, characters you help - all actions wheather on small or large scale will have consequences, favourable or negative for the player and the world.

Deep combat system is designed to make action intense, challenging and satisfying. It offers multiple fighting styles with unique moveset, wide range of special attacks/abilities, sub-weapons and various weapon types. Wheather you prefer strength over speed, or fast and aggressive aproach in combat, by gaining and upgrading a broad variety of skills and choosing favorite weapons, player is able to form his own fighting style.

Figthing arena - one of main sorts of entertainment in this postapocalyptic society.
With rich weaponry at your disposal, combining different equipment and abilities, you will find numerous ways to deal with your adversaries regardless of their skills and numbers.

Throw bombs at your enemies, shoot them with a bow from a distance, use shuriken to interrupt their attacks, crush them with a powerful swing of a two-handed club or slash them with swift, deadly strokes of a katana.

You can interact and utilize other objects in a fight within an area to avoid enemies' attacks or use different kinds of traps against them.

Enemies act tactically in combat. Wheather they fight alone or in group, your foes will adapt to a situation and will use help of their allies to compensate their weaknesses: lightly armored opponents will hide behind an ally with a shield to wait for an opening to strike and retreat, while stronger opponents will try to surround you by getting behind your back to attack from both sides, or shoot at you with a long range weapon from a distance.

There are many kinds of dangerous creatures that you will face in your journey.

When the last standing opponent is defeated, you can perform an "execution" - a brutal and violent way to finish your foe.

Fluid animations will help you easier to react to enemies' attacks.

Items you'll acquire while exploring the world will always have a practical value. Instead of packing up your inventory with worthless junk, you will benefit by selling needless stuff and utilizing other items to craft new ones. Crafting could significantly help if you choose to upgrade certain skills. Find diagrams to forge your own weapons, recipes to cook food and produce drugs giving you temporary buffs, or sell the stuff for a good price.

Any kind of interaction in the game is provided with a special animation.

World of Meifumado consists of multiple different kinds of locations; each with its unique environment and atmoshpere. Player is allowed to visit them and explore in any order, after leaving the first, opening area. Major locations are divided into multiple non-linear, interconnected, metroidvania-structured levels. Wheather the player is roaming around a hub or going to explore dangerous areas outside the safe city walls you will always be able to find something interesting: side quests, random events, useful and rare items, discover hidden areas.

Much attention is paid to a high detalization of the environment.
Also you will come across numerous side activities to engage in, in your travels: guard or raid caravans, participate in fighting tournaments, make money by gambling.

We would like to add customization of your character's appearance by changing an armor or clothes. But such endeavor is very time consuming considering fluid and detailed animations that the game has, counting hundreds of frames for the main character. So, that feature will appear as a stretch goal.

Rather than fill the game world with countless repetetive and dull fetch quests we chose different approach to quest design. Many side-quests that player will encounter are story-driven, offering several ways to complete, focusing on narrative, well-written characters and freedom of choice, providing player with lots fun and memorable moments. Side-quests aren't just additional content, but a motivation for player to explore the game's world and interact with its inhabitants more, learning their stories and leaving an impact on the future of their lives according to your actions.

Big towns are a great place not only to find side quests, but also to get a rest and prepare for future battles by getting help and having deals with the locals by trading with merchants, learning and improving skills from different masters, upgrading weapons at a blacksmith. etc.

Meifumado is set in a dark, cruel post-apocalyptic world, torn and left in ruins by the great global war. But the war is a long forgotten past. The remnants of mankind are to deal with the consequences, striving to survive in this new dark era. Vital resources are scarce and aren't enough for everyone. From food supplies to medicine - people fight for every bit, as the strong prey on the weak.

a0d2dc178610f5346da32e1bc7bfef67_original.png

Northern mountains are dangerous to roam around; representatives of the local fauna react quite aggressively towards trespassers.
The central conflict of the story is a war among several rival factions for control over a large island called Yamatai, that is left lying in ruins after the devastating global war. Player will get to choose a side and play a key role in shaping the future of the land of Yamatai and lives of its inhabitants.

Each faction vying for power has its own ideology and social structure. Here's an example of two of them:

Bakuhan - post-apocalyptic shogunate. Society based on the strict class hierarchy, rulled by several clans with shogun at the top. While the warrior-caste of samurai and their lords satisfy all their needs, peasants and miners as the lowest class of the regime are barely get by due to high level of taxation and needs to protect themselves from external threats: raiders, savage tribes of slavers, dangerous mutated creatures roaming the wasteland. As bakuhan doesn't provide them with sufficient protection, they have to rely on themselves.

Ryukai. A large group of fierce warriors settled in the northern mountains living by credo, "the strong lead, the weak obey". Any member of the society - soldier or slave are given freedom to rise in the ranks, proving their worth in a fight. They don't hide behind false morality. Ryukai expand by invading and conquering new territories, and enslaving people of local tribes and villages, absorbing and erasing cultural identity of subjugated groups, joining new blood to ryukai's warrior culture.

Looks like a nice 2D side-scroller action game, but not much of an RPG.

About the meaning of Meifumado:

Meifumado is a compound of two existing words, Meifu ( 冥府 ) and Mado ( 魔道 ). Meifu refers to a sort of underworld, translating to realm of the dead; hell. It has a synonym Jigoku ( 地獄) Which has a more direct connection to a specifically Buddhist Hell. It seems that Meifu is an archaic term borrowed up from the earlier Shinto beliefs and not a direct match for Hell. Much like how places such as Hades, the Abyss and Pandemonium are similar to, but are separate and distinct from the christian Hell.

Mado (魔道) translates to several interrelated concepts. Most clearly as, a way of life characterized as evil or heretical, but also as sorcery, black magic and netherworld outside the six realms where evil spirits roam. Mado also breaks down into two separate words, Ma and do. Ma (魔) meaning witch, demon, or evil spirit. Do (道) is the same as that which appears in bushido (way of the warrior). Giving a literal translation of way of the demon or demon way. It should be noted from this that to take up Mado is also a renunciation of Bushido (Ittos actions aside).

This one looks interesting and promising, hopefully they get the needed funding and will get the game made. I will most likely purchase the finished product if it looks as good as the concept videos, personally I'm pretty much done with backing Kickstarter projects these days (unless it's something really special that speaks to me on a personal level), too many badly managed projects which fell short of what they promised there.

Looks beautiful.

I'll watch this thread, forget all about it and maybe, just maybe --if these guys actually deliver-- get an alert in 2026 about the game getting released..

Bold of them to launch a kickstarter in 2022 without any visible demo (?). Actually somewhat rare to see a successful project that barely scrapes by. Looks neat and hope they deliver.

Gets kickstarter monies. Make 1 self congratulatory post. Radio silence for two years, make 1 backer-only post.

Oh yeah, this is going to be interesting.

Don't see any drama on kickstarter, barely any tumbleweeds there.
Dude did drop an update in may, thusly-
orbit studios or whatever said:
Well, I don't even know where to begin. To this very unusual kind of situation, or maybe some would probably call it a disaster, led not only my horrible luck but also huge, horrendous mistakes on my part.
I must apologize to all of the backers and to anyone who had supported the project in the past, for such a long silence. And that's, I'm absolutely sure, not for the last time I'll have to say sorry.
So, we obviously owe you an explanation.
As you probably know, we are a two men team from Belarus. Well it eventually came to me doing most of the work on the game up to this point. But let's return to that a little bit later.
So our location is very important to this story. You see it is actually not possible to launch a Kickstarter campaign from our country, this option is not available on the platform. Kickstarter has a limited list of available countries which you can find on their website. You can be a backer wherever you're from, but not a creator. The same goes for any crowdfunding platform you'll manage to find. It's possible to use a local one, but in case you aim to make more than a few hundred dollars, you'll have to work with the best. So, since the straight path to this goal is blocked, you'll have to find a way around. There aren't many options. You either open a company in one of the supported countries, which would be a long and expensive process, and also having a company alone is only a halfway because of a required verification process on Kickstarter, which can only be done by a person with a government issued id and a residential status of that country (where the company is from). Or you find an intermediary company which meets all the criteria and by a signed agreement will be legally responsible and obliged for receiving your money from the platform on their bank account, take their share, which also includes taxes and bank transfer fees, and then send what's left to you. After that you will also have to, of course, pay taxes in the country of your residency. That way, obviously, result in a loss of significant percentage of the money, but it's so much better than nothing.
Well, as you probably already guessed it, we took the second option, however risky it was. And with that information let's go back two years back, when our campaign was launched, it was March 2022. As you may remember right at this time something horrible was also launched prior. I'm talking about the Russian invasion of Ukraine. I've never expected to see that kind of war near the borders of my country in my life. It brought shock, fear, anger, and a lot of pain. Also after years of hard work and preparations for the Kickstarter campaign I was emotionally crushed to be honest. I had no idea what more horrific news each new day may bring. And all of that during the time of such a great opportunity to reach the goals I set out to achieve so long ago and put so much effort into. After consulting with my friend who's been working on the game along with me at that time. I've made the decision to go forward despite all that hell around and do not cancel the campaign. I guessed it wasn't going to end in the near future, so the only option was to accept these harsh circumstances and move on, dealing with whatever problems get in your way. That's life after all.
And I shouldn't have done that. Kickstarter campaign eventually turned out to be a complete disaster.
Yes we've reached the campaign goal and the funds were transferred to the bank account of our so called partners. But one little problem has surfaced: right after the war began, US and EU had started imposing a series of sanctions against Russia and my country, which heavily impacted the banking sector. I had a basic understanding of how bank transfers work and what those sanctions really can do. I thought that since SWIFT wasn't cut off and no one forbid foreign banks to make transactions to my country, everything should work just fine. What to fear here? It appeared the worst already happened, I just wasn't aware of this.
The next day the campaign ends, just in case, we ask our partners when they will be able to transfer money to us. They assured us that it'll take a few days at most after they receive the money from the platform, what is supposed to happen two weeks after the campaign ended. Despite all that negativity around and hard, stressful time I was actually happy and their words put me at ease since I wanted to blindly believe that everything is going to be alright. The hope made us careless.
And finally the day comes when Kickstarter sends the money, and our partners all of a sudden surprise us with the great news - they can't make a transaction due to the reason of their bank refusing to send it to Belarus. Not only they refuse to work with the Belarusian banks but also they can't send it to any of my foreign bank accounts because of my residency. It is required to enter a recipient's address for an international wire transfer. Address must be identical to the one which is entered when the account was opened, and banks always verify that address.
Very soon I 've learned that the situation is even much worse. Our partners turned out to be, at least as they claim, not only citizens but also residents of Russia. It means that they can't open a new bank account in any other US bank or work with any other payment system since nobody wants to provide their services to russians after the war started.
I don't want to waste your time with excessive details of how we've been trying to get those money during almost a year after the campaign ended. Let's just say that we - developers - from our end desperately tried to do everything we could to get those money, while on the other hand, our partners were horrible to work with, to put it mildly. At a certain point we started suspecting that they aren't very eager and don't want to deliver the funds to us, but instead, to use the situation in their favour and keep the money to themeselves. Despite the difficulty of the situation, there are always workarounds, but each time we offer an option of how they could pay us, we would get promises to try our ideas out, then after a long silence they'd return to us with sometimes strange, feeble excuses of why our offer won't work, while at the same time they ask us to make an update witn an explanation of what happened to our backers. They complained that people are getting angry. So, we were supposed to fulfill our part of the deal, but there was zero progress on their end. Even with backers applying pressure from one side and us on the other had no positive effect. Unfortunately it seemed like they either do not want to properly cooperate, or, we're just dealing with an unprofessional, negligent attitude.
Each month we were full of hope that the issue would be resolved, relying on empty promises, like transfering money through another intermediary company. All the while the uncertainty of the future was driving crazy: will any of the game stores agree to work with us? Will international bank transactions work at all? There were a lot of questions about the future no one could give a confident answer to. The situation then and now is very unstable. But it's hard to abandon the dream, so, after long 6 months we made a decision to keep working on the game even on a very limited budget. We borrowed some money from friends, family, took bank credits, but mostly used our own savings.
The obvious question you have is why no updates if we kept working on the game this whole time. Well, bearing in mind all the problems I mentioned above, the work on the game could stop any day, not month or a week, just one bad day, one bad news could change everything. Also it was nonstop work: 12-15 hours a day with no weekends. Given the working hours there was almost no time for such a small team to make even rare updates about the developement progess and keep in touch with the community we built, if we wanted to meet the deadlines. Our extremely small budget dictated the terms. It may seem it doesn't take much time, but every now and then you have to talk to your backers, answer their questions. There are almost 14 hundred backers and only two of us. We actually were getting a lot of messages during the time the campaign was live, on our social media: Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, email. Believe me it takes time to reply to everyone. And as I already mentioned above at a certain point of time I was even left to work on the game alone, although closer to release there's again two of us.
But anyway, I know it wasn't right to keep the silence, it was a very wrong decision made by me. I wasn't thinking clearly at the time while going through a depression. I thought if we make an update we must have a definitive answer: either we get the job done or cancel the project. I thought that if we'll make a statement that we're not sure if the promises will be delivered, people will be angry anyway. But it was not right, I know that. And it's not the kind of apology letter where I say I'm sorry but it's all someone else's fault. It is our responsibility to answer to you, and the complete lack of communication was just disrespectful. So, again, I apologize for that to all of you.
Let's talk about the state of the project. If no force majeure factors middle in again the game will be released this year. Our plan is to release it this summer. I'd ask you to please give us a little more time and in about a week or just few days, we'll start sharing some content and the progress done on the game on our social media (Twitter, Facebook). We also work on the release date trailer that will see the light of day somewhere in June. That is a very busy time, so please excuse us if it takes a while for us to reply to your messages. And please remember that some rewards will be delivered only some time after the release due to the difficult situation we are in.
Also, we still hope to make refunds through the Kickstarter to some percent of the backers, which could be possible to do with just a credit card. But our partners all of a sudden now claim that their bank is closing the account and don't allow any incoming or outgoing transactions without really explaining the exact reason. But there's also no reason to trust them. We'll see how it all ends.
