GTA IV utilised PC hardware that wasn't even on the market at the time, but you don't see it in benchmarks do you?
:hmmm:

What. That's what Rockstar said themselves, word for word. The fact that the visuals didn't justify the performance whatsoever is what I'm getting at.

I'm getting some pretty heavy Kane&Lynch vibes from these screenshots, which ain't something I really like, to be honest. Not to mention the fact that I'll most probably never play the game on my current rig, so I'll just have to watch a playthrough or someshit. I hope they don't screw this up, Max Payne was a really cool franchise so far.

Kane and Lynch were decent games. The first game had a good story and the characters were nice. Over the top, but acceptable. A simple case of guilty pleasure in my case.
The second one was really good for like 1/2 of it, then it broke down mostly because the enemies were always repeating in huge numbers and the story was "preprocessed" for DLCs. Streamlined as shit also.
And even if the multiplayer had a nice touch, it was not enough to save the game/franchise from a ME3 ending. So, flawed games but also fun. Mindless fun, but whatever.

As for Max Payne, I think the games were overrated. Or at least they did not age well, because I did not played them on release date. So, I don't know.
But I can agree that is somewhat awkward for the franchise to switch from John Constantine to GTA realism.

I don't know what's all the butthurt about max being bearded and bald this time around. The guy was a pretty different character between MP1 and 2 already - in first game he was a young cop, much like Brad Pitt character from Seven while in the second more like a disillusioned older guy (I have yet to play MP2, I'm replaying MP1 atm). Growing a beard and shaving your head seems to be a next gen stage of disillusion. I'd know cause I've done just that a few years ago and never looked back.

I don't think it's so much about the fact that he's different from MP1/2 but that it's basically a testament to how much they've strayed from the noir atmosphere/stylization of the first games.

I recently replayed MP1, and then once again with the kung fu mod, but I can't bring myself to MP2 for some reason. I guess I'm just not looking forward to playing as Sax with a Dragunov in that one mission.

If I want to play Max Payne, I always pick the second one nowadays. After getting ragdolls and Havok physics it just isn't that fun to fight the bullet sponge enemies of MP1 anymore. That, and I've only finished MP2 about ten times whereas with MP1 that number is probably around twenty.

While I sometimes hate my action games changing style and setting (HL, Far Cry, Crysis) I think MP case is a bit different. It is an eclectic mix of Noir, comic book action, Hong Kong crime drama as well as a game that was always about pushing limits of TP/FP action, gunplay, narrative etc. AFAIR both MPs were advertised as inventive in this regard and it can clearly bee seen that Rockstar tries to continue this tradition in MP3 (character and weapon physics, tons of mocap etc). They try to do cutting edge gunplay and MP franchise was always about that to some extent. I don't have problem with this and besides I can easily imagine Max being pissed off and emigrating to South American metropolis and well, being Max Payne in more tropical environment. I have to disclose that I never played or liked much of core Rockstar stuff that is GTA though.

I read on RPS that not using cover system at all is completely valid tactic when playing.. They were bitching about the amount of cutscenes though.

I just feel like Max Payne = the only decent noir game. If they wanted to push that, they could have made a new game.

basically, they hurt my feelings. qq.

Couldn't disagree more. New York City was just as important to Max Payne as Black Mesa was for Half-Life, perhaps ever more. The streets and slums of New York defined a huge part of the atmosphere and style of the first two games, and in Max Payne's case the style often goes above everything else. I think changing the setting is equivalent to changing the main character or removing bullet-time entirely from the game.

Meh, as long as it has over-the-top angsty monologues from Max, I don't really care where it's located.

No, those monologues are just a part of what makes the total picture of "Noir", and even if MP3 can be a good game it is much less "Noir" than mp1/2 or maybe even other games (la noir, Fahrenheit?) It would have been more proper to create a new game and not stick the MP "brand" on it, but I understand the motivation. I am kind of excited that Rockstar is doing this one, could have been much worse.

Hahahha, now you can also pre-order the DLC !

Rockstar has announced their downloadable content plans for their upcoming shooter, Max Payne 3.

The DLC plans for Max Payne 3 involve seven different pieces of content that will be released beginning in June and ending in the fall. Rockstar is offering the DLC individually as well as via the Rockstar Pass, a form of “season pass,” which will enable gamers to download all of the DLC to be released for the game in 2012 as soon as it’s available. The pass is available for pre-order today at a price of $29.99 at Best Buy, GameStop, via the PlayStation Store on PSN, or via Xbox Live (for 2400 Microsoft Points). The PC version of the pass will also be available somehow for $29.99. Rockstar claims that the Rockstar Pass will save gamers 35% compared to purchasing the content individually.

The first downloadable content pack is called the Local Justice Map Pack and includes: the Police Precinct map for Gang Wars, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Payne Killer multiplayer modes. The pack will also feature two additional maps for Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Payne Killer, new precinct-themed multiplayer avatar items, multiplayer challenges, and more. The Local Justice Map Pack will be available in June 2012.

The full DLC schedule follows:

June 2012

Local Justice Map Pack

Summer 2012

Disorganized Crime Map Pack
Deathmatch Made In Heaven Mode Pack
Hostage Negotiation Map Pack
New York Minute Co-Op Pack

Fall 2012

Painful Memories Map Pack
Trickle Down Economics Map Pack

Max Payne 3 will be released for PS3 and Xbox 360 on May 15th, with a PC version release to follow on May 29th.

Sure I’d love to buy $30 worth of DLC for a game that’s not even out yet, and therefore I can’t possibly know if I’ll even like it or not.

Off the top of my head the "SEASON PASS DLC" games I can I think of are: Gears of War 3, Saints Row 3, Max Payne 3

I sense a trend.

this game actually looks really cool. the only thing i dislike so far is of course the fact that they changed the setting from grimy new york to sunny brazil, seems kind of jarring. and having max shave his head.

I always object to the people who deride Max Payne 3 with the excuse that "Max Payne 2 had the perfect ending and 3 will ruin it!". No, it really didn't. Payne may of gotten over the death of his wife (and I stress the 'may', PTSD isn't something that just turns off), but he still has to deal with the fact that he's murdered even more people (something that got him significantly down in the dumps after MP1) including somebody that he admits to have been a good cop, the fact that literally everyone he's ever come in contact with has died horribly or betrayed him THEN died horribly (including the only woman he's loved in years), the obvious problem of explaining to the court why he killed so many people, this time without Woden backing him up, and his severe alcohol and painkiller addiction (he's practically popping them like tic tacs in MP2). He's still clearly got alot of unresolved issues that could be expanded on.

You could also make the equally valid argument that Max Payne 1 had a perfect ending that was ruined by Max Payne 2. Payne finds out who murdered his family, got his revenge by killing her, most of the loose ends have been tied up (Mona and Vinnie were dead, them coming back in MP2 was practically a retcon), and got away with it scot-free. Everything was peachy.

And people, Noir is a film aesthetic first and a genre second. It's perfectly feasible to have a Noir film set predominately in day-time and in a city like Sao Paulo. In fact, a place like Sao Paulo is practically ideal for a Noir piece. I think the change suits Max Payne's character. He's trying to turn over a new leaf and leave his old life behind him, but he really doesn't know anything about where he is and his old ways quickly catch up with him when he learns it's no better than New York. A scene where he's harassed by a group of teenagers yelling at him in unsubtitled Portuguese really nails that point home; He's a stranger in a strange land.

I don't really know what all the butthurt is about.

You also play portions in Jew York, and I think most of the game Max has still an unshaved head, so I don't get the butthurt.

Be glad a real developer is creating a sequel. If Remedy was developing MP3, it would have probably taken them another 5 years, would look like shit, play like shit, and be Xbox exclusive.
