About the inbred thing --apart from me wanting to make a deliverance joke-- It seems that Mary is in too deep with this ritual thing. And since the Barrows family obviously has a history of demonic practicing, she seems like she was always one of the family. Obviously Simon Barrows *is* of the family , so that's where this theory came from.

As for why this game is mostly unknown, it's because it was never released to the west and only recently an unofficial translation patch was made.
