Very nice attack, didn't expect it, but then I didn't know about the University having surrendered to the Hive in secret. This was a turn or so after the first strike, Hive units dropped in from the forward sea base. There was no way I could get enough probes into the flanking bases, so it was time for layoffs. Of course, now the Hive has a ton of units in Sea Collective, and I have no way to get out until I clear away the enemy. Very frustrating, to say the least.
By the way, I certainly didn't expect the alliance against us. The University was really pulling ahead, enjoying the benefits of the Cyborg Factory (instant elites with the right choices) and the Weather Paradigm. There was also the naval project which grants naval units elite status and extra moves. Really, there was no way I could take that on this early in the game even if I wanted to.
Our little enrichment campaign against Gaia was a good opportunity because of the sunspot activity. The goal was simply to get rid of the University's puppet that could feed it cash and to speed up TURN. Amusingly, it seems to have led Hellraiser to fear a massive invasion of his territory. I sent one transport worth of units across the sea as well as a bunch of jets he was immune to anyway on account of unlocking Aerospace Complexes. Despite this, he overinvested something fierce in unit production and deployed yuge stacks of elite units to repel the invasion force that was totally real in his mind.
So the whole Hive probing University thing a couple of turns back? Yeah that never happened, Hellraiser just gave Grimgravy tech out of its own volition. Ever since Merc quit the game I've been third in power. Suffice it to say that I did not expect the two leading powers to unite against the underdogs.
So what are our prospects of winning? Frankly, next to none. AgentOrange did very well against Hellraiser in the field, but early on he made a lot of mistakes and his bases are quite gimped as a result. I never really recovered from the sacrifices made during the Spartan invasion either. Still not going to surrender, though. If you want my precious yehzah you have to come and pry it from my cold dead fingers.
