Overall this might be the best FF, at least gameplay-wise, ever since Squeenix decided to make the series ARPG's.
Probably. Hopefully they are also planning for the game to have party based combat like in FF7R, which is tons of fun.

I disliked this trailer the first time I saw it. However, I rewatched it a few hours later with something more akin to Vagrant Story in mind and now my impression is much more positive. I do hope it maintains a party based gameplay though.

When it comes to control multiple PC's sure, turned-based will always be better. If the game is about controlling only 1 PC then action combat blows turn-based the fuck out
In the first sentence, you are comparing it to just FFXV and FFXVI, right? You're probably right then.

When playing single player RPGs, they generally suck because you should be playing a team. With some games like Fallout, the combat manages to still be enjoyable because how well the other game elements work. It also helps that it becomes two player when you get companions, and that it has strategic aspects. Wolfenstein RPG was still good as well. Turning a random single-player ARPG into turn based could be interesting as well.
It depends on which is better.

As far as I'm aware people loved FF XIV's writing and characters, DMCV has fantastic combat, I'm not sure how this could be worse than XV or even be particularly bad. Maybe not great, too early to say for that, but it's not a death knell.

The mundane graphics in a way actually make me hopeful that I'm getting something a bit less overproduced like XV or FF7R.

I think so but I have been moving more towards more realistic depictions of physics (actually having weight beneath each footfall instead of the “floating/skimming over the ground” effect), more organic characterization, and more integration of combat with overall worldbuilding versus the stylized approaches to CRPG design used in most JRPGs. I’m starving for a combat system where a swordsmaster feels legitimately threatened when surrounded by ”cannon fodder” wielding a combination of spears and swords because the swordsmaster is exhausted and can’t hot a magical “defeat all by pressing A” escape hatch. Or a game where a mage’s means of interacting with the world is so fundamentally different from a no -mage that a magic user’s player is legitimately splitting their concentration between lowering or raising heat or manipulating kinetic force to generate an effect that they don’t notice an assassin about to backstab them, rather than just “press A to fire your AOE”. This tends to make me less appreciative of Yoshi P and anime-inspired JRPGs. For example, I played FFXIV but did not like the newer stories though I see that Yoshi P saved that game. Still, that was an MMORPG which tend to be horrible time-and-life wasters so I will try to stay open minded.

Still, the Trailer’s opening scenes begging us to have an emotional concern for that kid were boring and fell flat to me. I was thinking: “They’re mining the summoner and protector mine again?” and then familiar tropes started appearing such as Clever Blond Woman Commentating and Dark Haired/Dark Clothed Angsty Swordsman Protagonist (?) and I was checking out. And the Shiva summoning scene looked bad. As in so bad that I thought it was reusing graphics from Heavensward. The trailer’s story seems to resemble Shiva’s role in the FFXIV Heavensward story in general.

I kept thinking how much more interesting Agni’s Philosophy looked compared to what I was watching.

What we saw could have just been a badly edited trailer but it did not really grab my attention in a good way. I was way more excited by the sheer graphical execution of the Demon’s Souls trailer.

I’ll be interested to see which writers actually write the story and scenarios. I think Lost Odyssey was an example of how good a collaboration between Japanese game designers and authors (Japanese or non-Japanese) can be and it was not used to full effect in that game.

It's true, the only good two games are VII and I and the 1/2 good game is VIII. I got bored of them after 10 and don't feel like playing the rest.

FF Dissidia Duodecim is actually good. Gameplay loop is solid, and after handheld-story mode, freeroam story mode (yes, that's a thing there) and "labyrinth" mode are interesting.
Crisis Core was good too. And FF tactics also.
It's funny that non-main games are much better.

It's been nearly twenty years since they made a good game, guys.

Wow someone with common sense when it comes to this series. It's Square Enix, they never once lived up to Squaresoft. It was like they half-tried at the start with X-2 and 12, I don't know what happened a thousand fans probably REEEEE'd hard that those games were lacking (though had some merit), and from that point onwards square Enix weren't even trying to make a good game anymore. That they sell more copies than ever is simply baffling to me. Well, I mean I know people have terrible, awful taste and standards on the whole, as well as are a bit simple minded when it comes to branding (just because it says "Final Fantasy" doesn't mean that is what it actually is) and marketing. throw in some waifus on top and you got some dollar coming your way, but fuck me the games themselves are terrible yet people convince themselves they're somehow good. "but Final Fantasy 13 gets good after 15 hours, in the final third of the game!", the amount of times I heard that. Are you fucking kidding me?

Yes. Love the slavery comment too. Still, people actually buy and think they enjoy these games en masse. Numbers scaled down to match 90s vidja market, or modern huge one, the fact so many do this would be disappointing to me either way.

There's normal people who don't play games all the time, those are the types who haven't played square games since 1997, and spent their time on things like Monster Hunter and Battlefield. Their taste is all over the place. Years later they bought FFXV and had a moderately fun time with it. It had been so long that they had a Square game that just playing it was a novelty in itself. Like a 'Second Contact' with a subgenre.

And there's the turbostans around which the entire Kingdom Hearts business model of 'please just let this be over already' revolves.

RPG fans are in the middle. They have neither the chad bliss of a normie nor the impetus of a fan. Whatever these games have to offer, they've seen it done better elsewhere, and recently too. The story/characters/art might scratch an itch. And if it doesn't, those customers just... go away, never to return.

Enix never actually developed their own games though. The company that made the last two enix Dragon Quest games, Heartbeat, closed down on their own because they decided it was too expensive to keep making games. Final Fantasy VII is still the best selling game in the series. In Japan at least, Dragon Quest sales have remained the same over the years. Almost everyone disliked FFXIII, where I've only heard one person say they liked it.
I agree that just the franchise name doesn't mean anything for predicting whether a game will be good. What's important is who is actually developing the game, and whether they can still make games.

So, is it a good game? Is the combat good? Is it a hard game?
