Received this email yesterday:

Order Update - Ion Fury: Aftershock Hail to the Queen Edition

Hi there,

You are receiving this email because you purchased the limited Hail to the Queen Edition (AKA Big Box Edition) for Ion Fury: Aftershock, developed by Voidpoint.

We are confirming that your order is still being processed. However, a variety of complications occurred during the production of these physical editions; as such, they have taken longer than originally anticipated to produce and ship. We sincerely apologize for these delays.

If you would prefer not to wait any longer for your order, we are offering an alternative option: you may exchange your order for a collection of Steam codes that will unlock access to a selection of 3D Realms and Saber Interactive titles in your Steam Library. There are 18 games in total, with a combined value exceeding $400 USD.

The full list of Steam titles are:
• World War Z: Aftermath
• Teardown
• Insurgency: Sandstorm
• Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered
• Insurgency
• Bloodless
• Ion Fury
• Ion Fury: Aftershock
• Cultic
• Wrath: Aeon of Ruin
• Phantom Fury
• RIPOUT
• The Kindeman Remedy
• Graven
• Bombshell
• Heading Out
• Dakar Desert Rally
• MX Nitro: Unleashed
If you decide to exchange your Big Box Edition order for the aforementioned collection of Steam codes, please confirm your choice by replying to this email within 30 days. Choosing to exchange your order for this game collection offer means that you will no longer receive your original order for the Big Box Edition(s).

If you reply confirming that you are taking advantage of this exchange offer, we will respond with a link to a short Substitution Agreement form. Once we verify that you have accepted the exchange offer, we will reply with a link to an unlock form and a code to enter to unlock your Steam game codes.

Once you have received your codes, head to Steam > “Games” > “Activate a Product on Steam” and input each code individually to unlock your games.

We want to thank you for your patience.

Sincerely,

The 3D Realms Team

They didn't anticipate demand for physical editions?

According to that 3D Realms email, if you don't want a substitution, you should get the box you ordered at some indeterminate point in time in the future.

Did you write another email asking for an estimated date of delivery?

Why bother? I'm not going to get an answer as this is over a year late as it is.

Merida, again
Why are physical copies so hard to produce? They are always lagging behind...

Most companies now probably just lack the logistics necessary, especially smaller studios or ones that have gone trough several restructuring phases. Physical copies and media are treated as a luxury for the most part.

I was with a friend watching him play Aftershock. The motorbike section looked... ill-advised.

Besides that, the combat was intense, the guns were good, enemies were fairly varied, and levels were nice if a bit too large.

The game is a solid testament to the abilities of the Build engine.

The protagonist could have been sharper. She has personality, no doubt. But slightly more of an edge would have fit the world better.
