ΤΒ rpgs are not a challenge, they are just time consuming. If they are fair, they are easy to beat, if they are unfair and tedious, they just take a lot of cheesing/savescuming to beat, but either way, they are not a very good experience. Which is why only a tiny fraction of gamers play them.
A tiny fraction of people play X-COM? I don't think the issue is turn based games, it's that compelling turn based systems can be harder to get right. In real-time much can be forgiven due to the rapid nature of the thing. A tactic can become tedious rapidly in a turn based setting but in real-time if the flow is right it's just a staple. Battle Brothers and Knights of the Chalice 1 are both very satisfying. Turn based games, by necessity occupy a different domain due to the variety of options among a larger grouping which are offered. It would be a fiddly mess to consider the wealth of weapon and armour types in Battle Brothers if it were real time because the player wouldn't have the specific control which a turn based system provides.

This. Baldur's Gate is hectic imo, because it's real time, but that's also what makes me forgive it, precisely because it's hectic. Hearing Gnolls get blasted into bits and mages chanting shit in the battle like they're going to fuck the universe itself, all in unison, is harder to imagine in turn based combat.

I agree, mostly. I have sympathy because I think busting the balls of the players is key to making a game addictive and fun. I need challenge and something to beat. But it also needs to be a fun process otherwise what's the point. I also see this problem in more than just RPGs. GTA4 had you drive miles like a morning commute to your mission and you even had to stop at a toll booth.... And then you get to the mission and something goes wrong and you get blown up, yeah maybe I fucked up or maybe a taxi exploded right next to me for no reason. But now I have to do that morning drive through the damn toll booth again. It bugged enough people that someone made a mod. I would rather just have better games to begin with. Games don't even need filler. I'd rather have an awesome hand-made 15 hours than 50 hours of grind or open world crap.

It's true most narrative games don't justify their length.

Just wanted to say you have my vote for 2021, I doubt anyone can top that.

Aside from you, of course.

After replaying Morrowind and New Vegas and being bored as fuck of their "action" gameplay... I realized I do really like RPGs. I was never bored of combat in proper RPGs, but the combat in these two games is just tiresome.

I'd venture to say even a middling and questionably designed TB crpg, especially squad based, proves itself to be more of a brain teaser than walking around in TES games. TB is the sort of entertainment I'd compare with chess problems or sudoku, an exercise in planning forward. Games are supposed to be like this, aren't they? A challenge to beat, even if the challenge is nominal.

You know, I would almost agree with you if we were only talking about TB RPGs without a tactical grid. It's very hard to make TB combat interesting without positioning as an element.

Uh-huh. Yeah. Sure.

jrpgvswrpg.jpg

Left column: "let's describe the backstories of these characters, and let me throw in the setting and the story of the game for some good measure".
Right column: "let's describe what these characters look like".

Seems legit and totally not biased.

Yeah but do these characters have any personality or function beyond being teenage boys in generic fantasy hero roles?

The protagonist of Chrono Trigger has "..." as the most common line in his dialogues LMFAO

Western RPGs have way more interesting protagonists AND allow the player to shape that protagonist to their will, while JRPGs have much more generic protagonists and you can't even define them in any way. No dialogue options or keyword conversations, no flavor options to define what your personality is like, and many JRPGs don't even allow you to choose your protagonist's class and skills, you're locked into whatever the devs decided for you. Cloud is always going to be the boy with the bigass sword and you can't multiclass him into a wizard.

Therefore, JRPGs aren't RPGs. They're more like RWGs (Role Watching Games).
