Finally, who would you say are top tier game-reviewers?
I'd say Ross from Accursed Farms for going in-depth, and I always enjoyed LGR's reviews of The Sims before he put those on the back burner.

Caim I'd almost forgotten about Ross. He covers games that are even more niche / unknown than Mandy, Seth, Grim, and even the Codex's own Ed. I do hate spoilers in reviews though, and his reviews are like an explanation of mechanics as he explains the story.

Blackshirt Yes, TB was one of a kind. His ''first impressions'' were better than many reviews and he was sport on in his critiques of mechanics and the technical aspects. His videos were also spoiler free.

I can't help feeling he was brought down by his ''friends'' like those from Kotaku and the other usual suspects whose main work was on twitter. The get cancer tweet was a one-off lashing out which he later apologized for but considering that he was in the center of a friend circle which had major koolaid addiction and TDS, its surprising he remained as sane as he did for as long as he did.

He caught a bit of the ol' TDS towards the end, but aside from that he was a relatively well adjusted guy who was generally anti-woke and entertaining.

He mostly stayed neutral, even leaned slightly pro-GG during 2014/2015. Most of his friends immediately joined the anti-GG bandwagon.

He always called out shitty practices within the industry whether it was by journalists, publishers, developers or even "influencers" and was always on the side of the consumers. In term of ideals I feel like he was always pro-GG but never wanted to take any sides and I don't blame him considering it was full or grifters and shady groups on either side.
As far as his last years go, I think his editor and PR guy said that TB became very distanced from his audience and couldn't relate to them anymore. I'm sure his entourage and health problems only exacerbated the issue.

Yeah IIRC he was the one who broke the news about hidden sponsorships from Shadow of Mordor, as well as many others. He even did a video defending Kotaku when they were blacklisted by Bethesda because less opinions are a net negative for the consumer. Considering the truckloads of shit it spewed in general and on him specifically, that took dedication to his principles. In GG, he didn't come out as anti and it led to some shitty outlets branding him a leader of it too iirc. That's also a sign of mental fortitude considering most of the American games coverage establishment jumped on it like it was the last packet of soylent on earth.

I didn't know his staff talked about him; could you share the link to it? One of the last things that set him at odds with the normal(more or less) community was that trap drama at a convention where he was pressured to virtue signal by kicking a visitor out for a ''transphobic'' question.

After his death, Zooc (his editor, PR guy and graphic designer), released a video talking about how it was working under him. I think he deleted it from his channel since I can't find it anymore.

Apologies for missing halloween
I'm not dead - video is in production but I didn't manage to get it done for the 31st, it should be out soon however - like early November.

All my love and blessings to everyone,
Thank you for your patience,

Let's hope the next vid isn't about retardard chinkshit shovelware again.
Idk, that was pretty complex as far as chink shovelware is concerned, so I didn't mind it.

That said, I don't like how he'll say he's doing a game like Baldur's Gate or whatever, wait 6 months and then say "nah, never mind, Mandalore already did it" and proceed to talk about some garbage MMO or a libshit game like Qud.

Totalbiscuit but he's dead.
TB was good when he stuck to reviewing and not letting his saviour complex get the better of him. Or when he told people to get cancer and die.

His contrariness could be pretty funny at times. I watched a stream of his for Mass Effect Andromeda where he'd kind of worked himself into this corner of the game not being as bad as people online were making it out to be, but you could also tell he was pretty annoyed by the game as he played it while also trying to downplay the shit he clearly didn't like. It made for a amusing watch.

I wouldn't say he was a complete contrarian. He was more principles-based than anyone in his time and anyone today. He had a SEHA boycott because SEGA shit the bed for many youtubers with some copyright striking thing and this was sure to have lost him money because it prevented him from doing videos on the Totalwar series, which is easy money to make because you can release a launch day review and be confident in getting views for many months by which time CA would've altered the game / DLC so much that you can't really receive any criticism for a sloppy video. CA also has an NPC insider program to give shills creators early access for free.

He was also critical of youtube hustlers and woke journos, the latter of which tried to cancel him many times for ''supporting'' gamergate, being ''racist'' among other things.

He did start becoming more unhinged as global wokeness ramped up but I'd say that's more a result of his woke friends and TDS. He was awesome at keeping it together considering how sane he was remaining despite knowing he was going to die soon.

I'd say a textbook contrarian would be Jim (Stephanie?) Sterling who punches the designated punching bags and stays quiet about people on the right side of politics.

Oh, I liked Totalbiscuit, and yeah, I agree with what you're saying. I'm just saying there were also times he'd be a contrarian just to be a contrarian, and watching him play Mass Effect Andromeda live on a stream was a funny example of it. Like in a review its a different thing because you're watching a crafted piece, but in that stream he's just playing it live in front of people and the contrarian position he'd already taken going into it was coming up against the reality of the game in a pretty humorous way.

I'm guessing the Chinese game being referred to is Amazing Cultivation Simulator.
